Android’s cached apps freezer, which some builds show as Suspend execution for cached apps, stops background app processes from using the CPU while keeping them in memory. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) describes the battery effect as “significant,” but it does not publish a battery-life percentage for the feature. A week-long difference on one phone is therefore a result for that phone, under those conditions, and not a figure you can expect on yours. The setting is real and documented, so it is worth testing; it is just not yet quantified for ordinary use.
What the freezer actually does
A cached app is one Android keeps in memory after you leave it, so it can reopen quickly. The cached apps freezer suspends the threads of those cached processes. The app stays in RAM, which avoids a cold start when you return to it, but a frozen app cannot run code and so cannot use the CPU until something unfreezes it. The AOSP documentation, last updated 29 September 2026 (UTC), frames this as minimizing CPU consumption by cached apps, which is where the platform’s battery claim comes from. Version requirements and the 10-second delay
The freezer is available on Android 11 (API level 30) and higher. On Android 14 (API level 34) and higher, cached processes are frozen 10 seconds after they enter the cached state. Android unfreezes them when a lifecycle event raises their importance, such as an incoming intent, a running job service, or you returning to the app.
What it is not
- Not force-stop. Force-stopping ends an app’s process. Freezing keeps the process alive, only suspended.
- Not uninstalling. The app remains installed and its data is untouched.
- Not clearing storage or cache. Clearing an app’s cache deletes stored files; freezing deletes nothing.
- Not a guarantee that every background app stops. AOSP notes exemptions. Some processes holding blocking file locks, and certain
BIND_WAIVE_PRIORITYrelationships, can stay unfrozen.
Turning it on and checking that it works
Support depends on a kernel with cgroup v2 and on how the device maker configured the build. Some phones will not show the toggle at all, so check before you plan a test.

- Open Settings and go to About phone. Tap Build number seven times to enable Developer options. Menu labels vary by manufacturer.
- Return to Settings and open Developer options. On some phones it sits in a different submenu.
- Find Suspend execution for cached apps and turn it on. If you do not see it, the build does not expose the toggle; use the ADB check below to see whether the flag exists.
AOSP also documents the same control as the activity_manager_native_boot use_freezer device configuration flag set to true. That is a build-level setting, normally a developer or custom-ROM matter, rather than something most owners will change.
Verifying the flag with ADB
With USB debugging enabled and the phone connected to a computer with Android platform tools installed, run:

adb shell device_config get activity_manager_native_boot use_freezerA value of true means the flag is on. To see which processes are frozen at a given moment, run:

adb shell dumpsys activity | grep -A 20 "Apps frozen:"This list is a snapshot. If no processes are frozen when you run it, the output will be empty or short, which does not mean the freezer is off.

What the battery evidence does and does not establish
Three statements are often blended together. They measure different things, and only one of them concerns battery life.

The week-long account behind this article reports a battery difference that surprised its writer. Published sources cannot confirm that result, because they do not identify the phone, Android build, usage pattern, or measurement method behind it. Treat the account as one observation to check against your own device.

Running a week-long test you can trust
A reliable comparison keeps everything constant except the setting. Run the freezer on for some days and off for others, using the same phone and the same apps, and alternate the days so one heavy-use day does not decide the outcome.

Record the following for each day:
- Phone model and exact Android build number
- Whether the toggle was on or off, and the result of the ADB flag check
- Battery percentage at fixed times, and screen-on time from your battery usage screen
- Network type, signal strength, and whether you were on Wi-Fi or mobile data
- Average brightness, battery saver state, and charging or temperature events
- App updates installed or removed during the test
Any change in these variables can move battery readings more than the freezer does. A difference that appears only when one of them changed is not evidence for the setting.

Trade-offs and failure modes
Because frozen processes cannot run, some app behavior changes. AOSP documents these issues, mostly for developers, but they are the things to watch for as a user:
- Background work may fail. Custom app features that expect work while cached may fail or behave unexpectedly.
- Calls to frozen processes can break. AOSP documents process termination after a synchronous Binder transaction to a frozen process.
- Scheduled tasks can bunch up. After unfreezing, a burst of delayed fixed-rate scheduled tasks can run together.
If an app that depends on background behavior starts misbehaving while the setting is on, turn the toggle off, reboot if needed, and check whether the problem stops. That is the simplest way to separate the setting from other causes.
Unused apps is a separate feature
Android’s unused-app optimization is a different system. For apps you have not opened for a long time, Android can delete temporary files, revoke permissions, stop background running, and stop notifications. You can review these apps under Apps > Unused apps, and turn off Pause app activity if unused for an individual app. The cached apps freezer does not manage those actions.
