I built my own Android expense tracker after free apps I tried presented subscription prompts. That was my experience, not proof that every free expense app charges a recurring fee: current options include paid tiers, optional upgrades, and apps described as free and offline. The useful question is whether an app’s cost, data handling, and features fit how you track spending.
What “free” means for an expense tracker
A free download is not necessarily a subscription-free product. An app may offer basic tracking at no charge while reserving features for paid plans. For example, Mizan lists monthly and yearly premium tiers and a one-time lifetime option; Oinkoin describes optional Pro features. Check the current listing for the price in your region and whether the features you need are included.
Also distinguish recurring charges from one-time purchases. If avoiding subscriptions is your priority, confirm whether a paid feature renews automatically or is sold as a one-time option. Do not assume “free” means every feature is free.

Choose a data and sync model you can live with
Local or offline storage
A local-only app can keep your ledger on your device rather than depending on a vendor-hosted account. Minty Flow describes this model. The trade-off is that local storage alone does not give you automatic access to the same data across devices, and you need to understand how the app backs up or restores its records.
Self-hosted or managed sync
FinX describes local, self-hosted, and optional managed-cloud modes. Local operation avoids account setup; self-hosting gives you control over the server but brings setup and maintenance responsibilities. Managed sync is an additional option, so check its current terms and cost.

Your own cloud folder
Spendium describes optional synchronization to the user’s own Google Drive or OneDrive. That is not the same arrangement as a vendor-hosted ledger, but you still need to verify what is synced, how conflicts or restores are handled, and whether the workflow is supported in the current release.
Check entry methods, export, and backup
Manual entry can work well if you want control and do not need transactions imported automatically. Mizan says it does not automatically link to banks and supports manual entry or CSV import. Before choosing any tracker, check whether its entry process is realistic for your routine and whether it offers a way to get your data back out.

- Import: CSV import can help when moving an existing ledger or adding transactions in batches. Mizan and Oinkoin describe CSV import.
- Export: FinX describes CSV or JSON export; Minty Flow describes CSV import and export. Confirm the exported data contains the fields you need.
- Backup and restore: Oinkoin lists backup and restore among optional Pro features. Find out whether backup is available in the version you will use and how you would restore data after changing phones.
- Recurring entries: Oinkoin describes recurring entries as a Pro feature. If you rely on them, verify the current access terms rather than assuming they are included for free.
Open source helps with inspection, not guarantees
Minty Flow and XPENC describe themselves as open source. That can make source code available for inspection, but it does not by itself establish that an app is secure, that its behavior has been independently audited, or that every distributed build matches the reviewed code. Treat developer-published privacy and feature claims as descriptions, not as proof of an audit.

A practical way to decide
- List the features you actually use. Decide whether you need budgets, recurring transactions, reports, CSV import/export, or automatic bank connections.
- Set your cost boundary. Look for recurring billing, optional paid features, and one-time purchase choices; check the current price shown to you.
- Choose where the ledger should live. Compare local storage, self-hosting, managed sync, and synchronization to your own cloud folder.
- Confirm portability before entering months of data. Find the export and backup options, and check how restore works.
- Try the workflow with a small amount of data. Make a few entries and test any essential feature—such as a report or export—before relying on the app for your full budget.
