Yes—Android Earthquake Alerts are available across all 50 U.S. states and six U.S. territories. Google completed the nationwide rollout announced on September 3, 2024. The system is built into compatible Android phones, needs Wi‑Fi or mobile data, and is intended to supplement—not replace—government warning systems.
What changed
Google said on September 3, 2024: “Starting today, we’re expanding the system to cover all 50 U.S. states and 6 U.S. territories.” The rollout finished over the following weeks. Google’s current help documentation lists the United States as a country where Android Earthquake Alerts are active.
This means an Android phone can warn you about a potentially damaging earthquake in every U.S. state, although the detection source and authorized warning system vary by location.
How Android earthquake alerts detect shaking
California, Oregon and Washington
In California, Oregon and Washington, alerts use the authorized ShakeAlert system. ShakeAlert relies on traditional seismic instruments and is operated with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and other partners. USGS describes it as an early-warning system for significant earthquakes.

The broader U.S. Android network
Elsewhere, Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts System uses accelerometers already installed in Android phones. When phones detect motion consistent with an earthquake, they send coarse-location signals. Google combines signals from many devices to estimate whether an earthquake is occurring, its location and its magnitude.
The alert a person receives therefore depends on the system authorized in that state. A quake that crosses state borders may be handled differently on opposite sides of the boundary.
When an alert is sent
Google says Android sends warning alerts when it detects an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 or greater. That figure is a target threshold, not a guarantee that every earthquake at or above it will produce an alert.
Rank #2
- Not every earthquake is detected.
- Magnitude and shaking-intensity estimates can be wrong.
- An alert may arrive before shaking starts, while shaking is underway, or after it has begun.
- The available warning time varies with the earthquake, your distance from it, network conditions and the processing time required to estimate its characteristics.
Because an alert can arrive late—or not arrive at all—treat it as extra warning, not as a substitute for local emergency instructions or your earthquake safety plan.
Do you need an app or special hardware?
You do not need to install a separate earthquake app for Android Earthquake Alerts. The feature is integrated into Android’s safety and location services on supported phones. An Android smartphone is both the receiving device and, in the wider national system, one of many phones whose accelerometer readings can help detect shaking.
Keep Wi‑Fi or mobile data enabled. Without an internet connection, the phone cannot receive the alert or send the coarse-location signal used by the crowdsourced detection layer.

How to turn earthquake alerts on or off
Menu names differ slightly by Android version and manufacturer. On many phones, use this path:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings.
- Tap Safety & emergency.
- Tap Earthquake alerts.
- Use the switch to enable or disable alerts.
On some phones, the setting is under Settings → Location → Advanced → Earthquake alerts. If you cannot find it, search Settings for “earthquake alerts.”
Turning the feature off stops earthquake warning notifications on that phone. It does not disable earthquake detection on other Android devices.

Android alerts compared with ShakeAlert
| Aspect | California, Oregon and Washington | Other U.S. locations |
|---|---|---|
| Primary detection source | Seismic instruments used by the ShakeAlert system | Accelerometers in participating Android phones, analyzed collectively by Google |
| Organizations identified in the documentation | USGS, Cal OES, Google and ShakeAlert partners | Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts System |
| Geographic role | Authorized government early-warning system for these states | Broader Android warning layer covering the rest of the United States and six territories |
| Alert qualification | Google’s Android documentation warns that detection, estimates and timing are imperfect; the alert target is magnitude 4.5 or greater | |
These systems are complementary. Nationwide availability does not mean every state uses the same sensors, agency or alert path.

Read the notification immediately and follow local emergency guidance. For an earthquake, the standard protective action is usually to Drop, Cover and Hold On: get low, take cover under sturdy furniture if possible, protect your head and neck, and hold on until the shaking stops. Afterward, watch for hazards such as damaged structures, broken glass, fires and aftershocks, and follow instructions from local authorities.

Why you might not receive an alert
- Earthquake motion did not meet the system’s detection criteria or was not detected.
- The phone’s Earthquake Alerts switch is off.
- Wi‑Fi and mobile data are unavailable.
- The estimate was produced too late for a warning at your location.
- Your phone’s Android software or manufacturer configuration does not expose the feature in the same place as the documented menu path.
Check the Earthquake alerts setting and connectivity first. Even with both enabled, Google states that detection and timing are not guaranteed.
What nationwide coverage does—and does not—promise
The September 2024 expansion establishes availability, not a published performance guarantee. Google has not provided a U.S.-specific figure in the cited announcement and help material for average warning seconds, user count, false-alarm rate or accuracy percentage. The practical benefit depends on the earthquake, your location, the authorized detection system and whether your phone has a working data connection.
