Android phones can share their mobile-data connection over Wi-Fi, but a dual-band hotspot is not a single new feature that works the same way on every phone. Where a phone offers a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz choice, 2.4 GHz is generally the safer pick for older or band-limited devices; 5 GHz may suit modern clients nearby. Check the phone’s settings, the receiving device’s Wi-Fi support, and your carrier’s tethering terms before connecting.
What a dual-band Android hotspot does
A phone hotspot lets other devices use the phone’s internet connection over Wi-Fi. The phone is acting as a Wi-Fi access point; it does not create cellular coverage where the phone has no mobile signal. Google says most Android phones can also share mobile data through Bluetooth or USB. Its Android Help guide describes Wi-Fi hotspots as supporting up to 10 connected devices, but that is Google’s stated guidance—not a guarantee for every phone or carrier configuration. Google’s Android hotspot and tethering instructions also warn that some carriers limit tethering or charge extra.
“Dual-band” refers to Wi-Fi operating bands, not to the phone’s mobile-network generation. A phone that supports a dual-band hotspot may let you choose 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, but the available options and controls depend on the specific phone and software. The title does not identify a newly released Android model or a universal setting: verify the options on your device rather than assuming every Android hotspot offers a manual band switch.

The choice is a tradeoff, not a guaranteed speed upgrade. A Google Pixel Community Product Expert described 2.4 GHz as more widely supported but more susceptible to interference, while 5 GHz can be faster with modern devices and has shorter range. This is community guidance, not a universal performance specification or a measured speed comparison. The Pixel Community discussion addresses the kind of band-compatibility issue users encounter.

For a client that only supports 2.4 GHz, a 5 GHz-only hotspot will not be suitable. Google notes that some Nest products—including the 2nd generation Nest Thermostat and Nest Protect—support only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Google Nest’s Wi-Fi compatibility guidance is a useful example of why the receiving device’s specifications matter.
How to turn on an Android hotspot and connect a device
Menu names and paths vary by manufacturer, Android version, and carrier. Google’s general instructions describe enabling a Wi-Fi hotspot from Quick Settings or the phone’s hotspot settings, then joining it from the receiving device’s Wi-Fi list.

- Check the connection and plan. Confirm the phone has cellular signal and that your carrier allows tethering under your plan. Google cautions that carriers may restrict it or charge extra.
- Open the hotspot control. On the phone, look for Hotspot in Quick Settings, or open the hotspot controls in Settings. Use the manufacturer’s instructions if the label or location differs.
- Check the hotspot details. Note the network name and password. If the phone provides a band option, choose one supported by the device you intend to connect; do not assume that option exists on every Android phone.
- Join from the client device. Open its Wi-Fi list, select the phone’s hotspot name, and enter the hotspot password.
For devices that cannot use Wi-Fi tethering, Android also supports sharing by Bluetooth or USB. Google notes that Mac computers cannot use Android USB tethering. Some instructions in Google’s help article require Android 14 or newer, so consult the page and the phone maker’s directions for steps specific to your version.

What to check when a device cannot see or join the hotspot
- Cellular signal: Check that the phone has mobile service. A hotspot shares the phone’s connection; it cannot supply internet access if that connection is unavailable.
- Band support: Confirm the client supports the band the hotspot is broadcasting. For a 2.4 GHz-only device, use a compatible 2.4 GHz option if your phone offers one.
- Network name and password: Select the correct hotspot from the client’s Wi-Fi list and recheck the password saved or entered on that device.
- Tethering permissions: Check your carrier plan for hotspot restrictions or additional charges.
- Device-specific settings: If the expected band control is missing, consult the phone maker’s instructions for your exact model and software version; Android does not have one verified band-selection path for every phone.
