Android Auto has useful audio options, but the available evidence does not identify six verified “underrated” apps or establish a firsthand story about how they changed anyone’s listening. Two concrete options stand out for distinct setups: Poweramp for music files stored on your phone and Plex for music hosted on a Plex Media Server. Which one fits depends on where your library lives.
First, what Android Auto does
Android Auto projects a driver-optimized experience from a compatible Android phone to a compatible car display or aftermarket stereo. It is different from Android Automotive OS, which is built into the vehicle as its own Android-powered system. Android Auto phone compatibility starts at Android 9 (API level 28). Google’s Android for Cars overview explains the distinction and platform context.
Android Auto audio can include music, radio, audiobooks, podcasts, and other audio. You generally need a compatible app installed and signed in on your phone; some services require a subscription or premium account. Google’s Android Auto help page gives examples of supported audio use and voice commands, but those examples do not establish a ranked list of six lesser-known apps.

Poweramp: music files stored on your phone
If your music collection is stored locally on your phone, Poweramp is one option to investigate. Its developer says the player works with Android Auto and lists formats including MP3, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, APE, DSD, and WV, as well as HTTP M3U streams. The feature list also includes folder and library views, smart playlists, gapless playback, crossfade, replay gain, tag editing, and album-art downloads. These are vendor-listed capabilities, not independent findings about sound quality or reliability.

Plex: music hosted on your own server
If your music is already stored on a Plex Media Server, Plex documents Android Auto playback through a selected server. The car interface can expose playlists, recently played artists, recently added albums, artist browsing, and music downloaded to the phone.
Plex’s support article specifies Plex for Android version 6.6 or newer and says the mobile app must be unlocked or activated to remove playback limitations. Select the server in the phone app while parked rather than trying to configure it from the car display. The support article was last modified April 4, 2025, so its setup details may change.

Google’s examples include requests such as “Play [artist] on YouTube Music” and “Play [podcast name].” These are examples of voice-command phrasing, not proof that a particular service is an underrated pick or a personal favorite. Google lists additional examples.

Choose what to play before driving, then rely on simple playback controls or voice requests rather than browsing through a library on the move. Google’s developer guidance describes voice requests for an artist, album, song, genre, station, or playlist, as well as controls such as pause and next track. It also cautions that in-app media playback while driving is not permitted beyond navigation voice guidance and media apps. Google’s media-app guidance explains the platform constraints.
