If your car does not support Android Auto, you can still use your phone for directions and audio: run navigation on the phone and play its sound through the car’s Bluetooth or USB connection, if available. If you want maps and other apps on the car’s display, the alternatives are a vehicle with Android Automotive OS or a compatible aftermarket stereo. None is a universal, like-for-like replacement; the right choice depends on your car, phone, and whether you need a car-screen interface.

First, know what you are replacing

Android Auto runs on your phone and projects compatible apps to a supported car display. Android Automotive OS (AAOS), by contrast, is built into the vehicle and can run compatible apps on the car’s infotainment system without projecting them from your phone. Google services—including Maps, Play Store, and Assistant—may be available on an AAOS vehicle through Google Automotive Services, but AAOS and Google services are not the same thing: automakers can contract for those services, so what is included depends on the vehicle.

That distinction matters when comparing alternatives. A phone playing directions over Bluetooth is useful, but it does not provide Android Auto’s projected, driving-oriented car-screen interface.

Compare the practical alternatives

Option Where apps run What you get Compatibility and effort
Built-in AAOS system In the vehicle A car-screen experience with compatible apps; available services and apps vary by car Only applies if the vehicle has AAOS; Google services depend on automaker arrangements
Phone navigation with Bluetooth or USB audio On the phone Phone-screen directions and audio through the car, if the connection is supported Check the car’s Bluetooth or USB capabilities; no projection interface is added
Compatible aftermarket stereo On the phone, projected to the stereo display A display-based phone integration option Confirm the stereo model, vehicle fitment, wiring, installation needs, connection type, and phone compatibility
Existing car navigation and Bluetooth In the car for navigation; phone audio may connect separately Uses features the vehicle already has Features vary by make, model, age, and installed software; check your vehicle documentation

Use phone navigation with car audio

If you mainly need directions and audio, this is often the simplest fallback when the car has no useful projection display. Start navigation on the phone and send sound to the car over Bluetooth or USB, depending on what the vehicle supports. Google’s media guidance covers listening to media with Android Auto, but the exact audio options available outside projection depend on your phone and car.

  • Fast Easy Setup & Auto Reconnection No app or complicated setup required. Just pair once via Bluetooth and enjoy automatic reconnection in under 3 seconds every time you drive. Powered by advanced 2.4GHz + 5GHz dual-band chips, this 2 in 1 CarPlay Adapter connects quickly—your maps, music, and calls are ready almost instantly.
  • OEM-Level Wireless Performance & Vehicle Control Our car adapter maintains the full functionality and preserves the seamless experience of your original CarPlay or Android Auto system—including Apple Maps, Google Maps, Spotify, Siri, and Voice Assistant—while supporting factory controls such as touchscreen, steering wheel buttons, rotary knobs, and voice commands.
  • Ultra-Compact & Flush-Fit – Clean Look, No Clutter Teeran Android Auto & CarPlay wireless adapter comes in a compact, space-saving design, about the size of a U.S. dollar coin, helping keep your car interior neat and clutter-free. The tapered design plugs in tightly and sits flush with the USB port. Once installed, the device is nearly invisible—no dangling wires, no bulky clutter, no loose connections. Includes both USB-A and USB-C extension cables to fit hidden or angled ports in different car layouts.
  • Smarter & Safer – Built for Real-World Driving Designed to handle everyday use, this Android CarPlay adapter offers efficient heat dissipation vents and is certified to operate between -20°C to 70°C. Built-in protection helps prevent overheating, short circuits, and voltage surges—reducing concerns about performance or safety on long summer drives. Tested for vibration resistance to support stable performance on bumpy roads.
  • Choose and start your route before setting off.
  • Use the car’s Bluetooth or USB audio connection if supported, and check how your car handles navigation prompts alongside other audio.
  • Keep the phone secured in a usable position. A mount may help, but no placement is universally safe: sight lines, vehicle interiors, and local rules differ.
  • Avoid handling the phone while moving, and check the rules that apply where you drive.

This setup leaves the phone’s own interface in use. Do not assume ordinary navigation or media apps will reproduce Android Auto’s car-optimized controls.

Check whether your car has Android Automotive OS

AAOS is an in-car operating system, not a phone-projection mode. If your vehicle includes it, compatible apps can run directly in its infotainment system. The selection is curated for car use: Google’s Android for Cars documentation describes categories such as navigation, media audio, and communication, and says video apps for AAOS are primarily for use while parked.

AAWireless Two – Wireless Android Auto Adapter – Convert Factory Wired Android Auto to Wireless – Bluetooth & Wi-Fi Auto Connect – Easy Plug & Play – Multifunction Button – Made in Europe
  • Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
  • Requires Android 11+
  • Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
  • Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
  • Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed

Before treating built-in AAOS as your solution, check the particular vehicle’s app availability and services. A car running AAOS does not automatically include Google Maps, Play Store, or Assistant; Google says automakers can contract for Google Automotive Services. Google reported more than 50 car models with Google built-in in its May 13, 2025 announcement, but that is a dated figure, not a current 2026 total. Google’s announcement also describes its reported adoption figures for that date.

Add a compatible aftermarket stereo

If you want a display-based experience and your vehicle can accept a replacement head unit, an aftermarket stereo may be an option. Google’s consumer page describes Android Auto support in compatible aftermarket stereos and wired and wireless connections. It names JVC, Kenwood, and Pioneer as examples of makers with wireless Android Auto stereos, not as an endorsement; check wireless support with the manufacturer.

When the car’s existing features are enough

You may not need to replace or add anything if the vehicle’s built-in navigation and audio already meet your needs. Compare what the car actually supports—such as route guidance and Bluetooth audio—rather than assuming that every vehicle’s built-in system behaves alike. Features depend on the make, model, age, and installed software.

Choose based on what you need

  • Directions and audio, without a car display: use phone navigation with Bluetooth or USB audio if the car supports it.
  • Apps running in the vehicle: check whether the car has AAOS and whether it offers the specific apps and services you need.
  • Phone apps on a car display: investigate a compatible aftermarket stereo and verify fitment and connection support before purchase.
  • Basic needs already covered: keep using the car’s existing navigation and audio if they work for you.

Google’s developer documentation also explains the design considerations for car apps in its design process guide and the Android for Cars overview. These resources help clarify why in-car app support is not simply the same as installing any phone app on a dashboard.
