To make an old Android phone feel faster, shorten its interface animations in Developer options. Lowering the animation scales makes transitions play faster, which can make navigation feel more responsive; it does not speed up the processor or prove that apps run faster.
What the animation change does—and what it doesn’t
Android’s Developer options documentation explains that Window animation scale and Transition animation scale control animation playback speed: a lower scale plays those animations faster. Android’s consumer guidance says reducing animation scales can make a device feel faster and more responsive. Neither source reports a measured performance gain or guarantees an improvement on every older phone.
Think of this as shortening the visual pause between actions, not repairing a slow app or changing the phone’s underlying processing speed. If the phone still lags after the adjustment, troubleshoot the cause separately.
How to reduce Android animation scales
- Open Developer options. If the menu is not visible, Android’s guide to enabling Developer options explains that a device’s Build number is used to enable developer settings. The exact steps and menu locations vary by manufacturer and Android version; consult your phone maker’s instructions if the guide does not match your device.
- Find the animation controls. In Developer options, look for Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and, where available, Animator duration scale. Names or availability may differ on customized Android versions.
- Reduce the scales you want to change. A lower scale shortens animation playback. Choose a setting that feels comfortable; Android’s cited guidance does not prescribe a particular value. Reducing animations modestly can preserve some motion, while disabling them removes it.
- Try everyday navigation. Move between screens and open or switch apps to see whether the shorter transitions suit you. If you dislike the effect, return to the same controls and restore their previous settings.
Change only the animation controls for this adjustment. Developer options also contain settings intended for development and debugging, so avoid changing unrelated controls as a general speed fix.

If the phone is still slow
Persistent lag needs troubleshooting rather than a faster animation. Google’s slow-device guidance recommends restarting after each troubleshooting step, checking for Android and app updates, reviewing storage, and using safe mode to investigate whether a downloaded app is responsible. Testing one change at a time makes it easier to tell what helped.
- Restart the phone and see whether the problem returns.
- Check for Android and app updates. Available updates and their menu locations depend on the device.
- Review free storage. Google says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free. This is a troubleshooting threshold, not a guarantee that freeing space will resolve lag.
- Investigate downloaded apps. Safe mode can help identify whether an app you installed is contributing to the problem; follow your manufacturer’s instructions for entering it.
Clear cache carefully; don’t erase app data by mistake
Storage and memory are different: storage holds files and app data, while memory is used to run programs. Google’s Android storage guide notes that clearing an app’s cache removes temporary data, and the app may be slower the next time it opens while that data is rebuilt. Clearing an app’s storage is different: it permanently deletes that app’s data. Don’t clear app storage as a blanket speed-up step unless you understand what will be removed.

Android settings differ across manufacturers and customized versions. If Google’s general steps do not match your phone, use the device maker’s support guidance.
