Android 15 adds protections for private apps and strengthens the response to phone theft, while Google Play Protect scans apps for harmful behavior. But these features do not all come from Android 15 itself: some roll out through Google Play services, and availability depends on the phone. None guarantees that every theft, scam or malware app will be caught.
Which protections are new in Android 15?
Android 15’s clearest privacy addition is Private Space, a separate, lockable area for sensitive apps. Google also announced theft protections in 2024, but some were made available to many devices running older Android versions through Google Play services rather than being exclusive to Android 15.

How Private Space helps protect sensitive apps
Private Space is intended for apps whose contents or notifications you do not want exposed alongside ordinary apps—for example, banking or health apps. When it is locked, its apps can be hidden from several visible parts of the phone, and opening the space requires authentication. Google describes the apps as “virtually invisible” while locked, not as impossible to discover or access under every circumstance.
Private Space is an organizational and access-control layer. It does not establish that an app is trustworthy or replace checking an app’s legitimacy. Setup and exact behavior can vary by device; Google’s Pixel launch notes describe availability on Pixel with Android 15, while also noting device-model dependencies.

What Android and Google do about fraud and malware
On-device checks for suspicious app behavior
At I/O on May 15, 2024, Google described using on-device AI in Google Play Protect to identify apps that may be involved in fraud or phishing. The described analysis considers sensitive permission use and interactions with other apps. A suspected app may be sent to Google for further review; if harmful behavior is confirmed, users may be warned or the app disabled. This is a described detection and review process, not a promise that every fraudulent app will be identified.
Google’s Android 15 I/O announcement presents this as a planned capability and process. It should not be read as proof that every Android 15 phone has identical fraud detection or that all scams happen through apps.

Google Play Protect scans apps from different sources
Google Play Protect is Android’s built-in app protection on devices with Google Play services. Google says it scans apps regardless of where they were downloaded, and its 2024 ecosystem report describes real-time scanning of novel apps. The report also describes protections such as revoking permissions for potentially harmful apps and safeguards around attempts to turn off scanning during calls.

- Google says Play Protect scanned more than 200 billion apps daily, in its report on 2024 ecosystem safety work.
- Google says real-time scanning identified more than 13 million new malicious apps from outside Google Play during 2024.
- Google reports that more than 95 percent of installations from major malware families exploiting sensitive permissions came from internet sideloading sources such as browsers, messaging apps or file managers. This statistic concerns those malware-family installations; it does not mean that 95 percent of all sideloaded apps or all Android malware is malicious.
These figures and capabilities are described in Google Security’s report on keeping the Google Play and Android app ecosystems safe in 2024, published in 2025. Sideloading is not inherently malicious; the practical point is that app source and behavior matter, and scanning is one protective layer rather than a guarantee.
Is every Android 15 phone protected the same way?
No. Android version, device model, region, Google Play services updates and feature configuration can each affect availability. Google said Android 15 began rolling out to Pixel devices on October 15, 2024, while its announcement separately described Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock as available for most Android 10+ devices. Private Space was described for Pixel with Android 15. Those statements do not mean that every Android 10+ phone has Private Space or that every Android 15 phone supports every theft feature.

Google’s January 27, 2026 update says Identity Check had been enabled for Android 15+ in early 2025. The new improvements announced in that January 2026 post apply to Android 16+ devices, so they should not be treated as Android 15 features. To check what your own phone supports, look in its security and privacy settings for the relevant feature, then consult the manufacturer’s update and device-support information. The presence of Android 15 alone is not proof that a feature has arrived, is enabled or is available in your region.

What these protections do—and what they cannot promise
- If a phone is snatched: Theft Detection Lock is designed to lock the screen after a suspected snatch-and-run; Remote Lock provides a way to lock it from another device after a security check.
- If an app contains private information: Private Space can put selected apps behind another authentication step and hide them from common app surfaces while locked.
- If an app may be harmful: Play Protect scans apps, and Google describes additional analysis and review for suspected fraud or phishing behavior.
These are separate layers with different dependencies, not a single Android 15 shield. Google’s announcements describe intended behavior and rollout scope; they do not establish that every threat will be detected, every attack prevented or a stolen phone recovered.
