Andrei Vasilevskiy was expected to start for the Tampa Bay Lightning against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, according to a CBS Sports/RotoWire report citing NHL.com’s Max Miller. That was a pregame expectation, not a confirmed start announcement—and it is now historical lineup news, not an update for an upcoming Saturday.
Which Saturday did the report mean?
It referred to Tampa Bay’s road game at San Jose on Jan. 3, 2026. The original item described Vasilevskiy as set to start, citing Max Miller of NHL.com; the excerpt did not include a direct quote or independently confirm the lineup. CBS Sports’ Jan. 3 report therefore supports an expectation before the game, not a guarantee.
What were Vasilevskiy’s numbers at the time?
As reported by CBS Sports/RotoWire on Jan. 3, Vasilevskiy had a 15–7–2 record, a 2.33 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage through 24 appearances in the 2025–26 season. In his previous four wins, he had allowed 10 goals on 100 shots, a .900 save percentage. Those figures describe his form as of that report, not his current statistics.
The same report noted that San Jose was tied for 18th in the league at 3.05 goals per game. That was the Sharks’ ranking and scoring rate as described on Jan. 3, not a current team ranking.

How did the San Jose game end?
Postgame coverage reported that Tampa Bay beat San Jose 7–3 and Vasilevskiy made 19 saves. That outcome is separate from the pregame report: it shows what happened in the Jan. 3 game, but does not turn the earlier expectation into a confirmed starting announcement.
What is the later context?
The Lightning later announced that Vasilevskiy received the 2025–26 Vezina Trophy, awarded to the goaltender judged best at his position by NHL general managers. For the Lightning’s Oct. 3, 2026 home opener against Washington, the team’s official preview noted that he had gone 1–0–1 with a .931 save percentage against the Capitals the previous season. That is historical matchup context, not news that he was starting on Oct. 3.
