PotatoP is a personal, open-build Lisp computer in a laptop-shaped case—not a commercial laptop. Andreas Eriksen designed it for small programming projects when his regular laptop was frequently out of power. The project deliberately gives up mainstream software compatibility, processing speed and a large screen in exchange for a physical keyboard, a compact Lisp development environment and extremely low energy use.
What PotatoP is—and what it is not
Eriksen describes PotatoP as a “laptop form factor device” built around uLisp, a Lisp implementation for microcontrollers. Its name is self-deprecating: the hardware is intentionally underpowered, while “P” refers to the intended laptop form and the lowercase “p” echoes Lisp predicate naming.
The project page says compatibility with existing software is not a priority. PotatoP is therefore better understood as a dedicated programming appliance and maker project than as a replacement for a Windows, macOS or Linux notebook. It is intended for writing and running small programs directly on the machine.

The latest dated update surfaced for this article is from August 10, 2024. That update reported working dual displays, basic battery-voltage measurement and a hardware prototype considered mostly feature-complete while Eriksen worked on a smaller PCB and custom keyboard. The available evidence does not establish a retail release or activity after that update.

The inventory also names an Adafruit SHARP display breakout, protoboard and jumper wires. That list describes the build materials; it should not be read as proof that every listed part is the final installed configuration. The project specifically identifies the Sharp LS044Q7DH01 panel as the display used in the prototype.
The Lisp environment and documented capabilities
PotatoP runs Eriksen’s PotatoP software on uLisp. The documented interface includes a basic editor and a read-eval-print loop (REPL), allowing code to be entered, evaluated and iterated on without moving to another computer.
- Programs can be saved to and loaded from the SD card.
- The editor and REPL run on the device itself.
- Eriksen documented writing a Snake game on PotatoP.
- Earlier builds encountered slower editor performance as files grew larger.
These capabilities make PotatoP useful for compact experiments, games and firmware-level tools. They do not imply support for desktop applications, conventional operating systems or the wider software ecosystem available on a general-purpose laptop.

Why the display and keyboard matter
A reflective, unlit screen
The 4.4-inch Sharp Memory-in-Pixel display is monochrome and has no backlight. It consumes very little power, but readability depends on ambient light. In a dim room it will not behave like a conventional illuminated laptop screen; outdoors or near a strong light source, its reflective design can be an advantage.
A real keyboard with a custom scan budget
The keyboard began as a Happy Hacking Keyboard Lite 2 modified so the controller could access its matrix. This gives PotatoP a more practical text-entry surface than most microcontroller projects, but scanning the matrix itself contributes to the power budget. Later logs describe a redesign of the keyboard-scanning approach to reduce that cost.
What “battery life measured in years” actually means
Eriksen’s project description says battery life is “up to 2 years”, depending on ambient light, with the 12,000mAh LiPo battery. That is a creator estimate for a changing prototype—not a standardized endurance test, a guarantee or evidence of two years of continuous active use.

A later project-page update said that switching off SD-card power when the card was not being used reduced the maximum observed average current to about 2mA. Eriksen says that observation was the basis for the two-year headline. A replacement storage module had not yet been tested in the same update, so the result should not be treated as a final production measurement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|
| 12,000mAh | The rated capacity of the PiJuice battery listed in the component inventory; it is not a runtime result. |
| About 2mA maximum observed average | A prototype observation after SD-card power was disabled when unused; Eriksen used it to support the two-year estimate. |
| About 2.5mA for display and CPU | An input to a February 2023 continuous-active-use calculation while running Lisp and updating at 10 frames per second. |
| 30mA SD-card draw at 5% duty cycle | An assumed storage-load input in that same calculation. |
| About 4mA total, about 2,500 hours or 125 days | The resulting theoretical continuous-active-use estimate with the 12,000mAh battery and no solar contribution. |
| 2.64mW idle; 5mW during a Lisp fractal update | Creator-reported prototype power measurements for those specific conditions. |
The figures are not contradictory: they describe different build stages and operating assumptions. A low average current during mostly idle use can produce a year-scale estimate, while continuous screen updates, keyboard activity and SD-card access consume substantially more energy. Solar assistance further changes the outcome, but only when the panel receives sufficient usable light.
Engineering compromises documented in the logs
Storage and display shared resources
Early versions had conflicts between the SD card and display because both used SPI. The logs also report that the card’s power draw was significant relative to the rest of the system. Later work included turning card power off when it was idle.

Keyboard scanning affected consumption
Keyboard scanning added to the system budget, prompting a redesign intended to reduce energy use. This is an important distinction from a conventional laptop: every peripheral operation matters when the entire computer is designed around milliamps rather than watts.
Large files exposed performance limits
The editor became slower with larger files. That limitation is consistent with PotatoP’s purpose: it is optimized for small programs and experimentation, not large source trees or desktop-scale development.

Comparing PotatoP’s “up to two years” directly with a laptop’s active-use hours would mix fundamentally different workloads and evidence types.
Bottom line on the project’s status
PotatoP is a compelling personal experiment in minimizing the energy cost of interactive programming. Its Artemis-based controller, reflective monochrome display, adapted keyboard, SD storage and optional solar hardware form a coherent low-power Lisp workstation. The two-year figure is best reported as Eriksen’s conditional prototype estimate, supported by a roughly 2mA observed average after power-saving changes—not as a verified two-year continuous runtime or a commercially available laptop specification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy a finished PotatoP laptop?
The documented project is a DIY prototype. The available project updates do not establish a retail product or consumer release.
Is the two-year battery life independently tested?
No independent, reproducible endurance test is established in the available documentation. The figure is Eriksen’s estimate based on prototype current observations, battery capacity and ambient-light assumptions.
