A social media account can be taken over when someone steals or guesses its credentials, or when an attacker misuses access that is already authorized. After getting in, an attacker may change account details, lock out the owner, or send messages in the owner’s name. Protecting the linked email account, using strong multifactor authentication (MFA), and reviewing who and what can access the account reduce risk.
How a social media account can be compromised
There is no single route into a social account. MITRE ATT&CK documents several credential-based methods: phishing for credentials, buying credentials from third parties, and brute-forcing credentials, including passwords reused from breach dumps. These techniques describe possible ways accounts are compromised; they do not establish how often each occurs or represent every possible path.
Phishing for credentials
An attacker may deceive someone into entering a username and password on a fake sign-in page made to resemble a trusted service. The attacker can then try those credentials on the real account. CISA says its FIDO protocol blocks the attempt when a user is tricked into signing in to a fake website, which is one reason phishing-resistant MFA is valuable.
Purchased or reused credentials
Credentials may be obtained from third parties or from data exposed elsewhere. If a person reuses a password, an attacker may try it on the social platform. That does not, by itself, mean the social platform was breached: the reused password may have been exposed through a separate service.

Brute-force attempts
Attackers may try to guess credentials, including passwords drawn from breach data. A unique password for each account makes a password exposed on one service less useful against another.
Already-authorized sessions and permissions
Not every incident begins with a newly stolen password. Someone may gain access through an already-authorized session, or an account may be exposed through a person or third-party app that has permission to use it. CISA advises organizations to limit authorized access and review third-party access; these are part of the account’s security boundary, alongside the linked email account.
What an attacker may do after gaining access
Account control can let an attacker act under the owner’s identity. The FTC identifies changed contact or password information, unfamiliar login activity, loss of access, and messages the user did not send as signs of compromise. A changed recovery address or password can also make it harder for the owner to regain control.

For an organization, an unauthorized post or message can appear to come from the business. Access changes and unusual logons matter too: they may indicate that someone has entered the account or altered who can use it. Monitor both account activity and authorized users.
How to recognize a possible takeover
Act promptly if you notice any of these signs, which the FTC highlights in its consumer guidance:
- An unexpected password or contact-information change.
- A login alert for a device, location, or activity you do not recognize.
- You can no longer sign in, or the account’s recovery details appear to have changed.
- Messages or posts appear that you did not send or create.
An alert is a reason to check the account, not proof on its own that it was compromised. Use the service’s official recovery instructions rather than links in an unexpected message. FTC guidance for consumers is available at Email or social media hacked? Here’s what to do; the recovery process itself is platform-specific and may change.

What to do if you suspect an attack
- Use the platform’s official recovery route. If you cannot sign in or details were changed, follow the account-recovery instructions on the platform’s own site or app. Avoid recovery links supplied by an unsolicited message.
- Secure the linked email account. It may be used to receive account alerts or complete recovery, so protect it with a unique password and MFA as well.
- Review the account after regaining access. Check contact details, recent activity, connected apps, authorized people, and messages or posts. Remove access you do not recognize and undo unauthorized changes where possible.
- Tell affected contacts or colleagues. If messages were sent in your name, let recipients know not to act on suspicious requests. For organizational accounts, follow the organization’s incident response plan.
How to reduce the risk of a social account attack
Use a unique password and MFA
Choose a password not used on other services, and enable the strongest MFA method the platform supports. MFA adds a verification step beyond the password. CISA recommends phishing-resistant MFA where available. Its business guidance ranks a security key as its strongest listed option, followed by authenticator methods, biometrics, and text or email codes; the available choices depend on the service and device.
A FIDO2 security key can be useful if the account supports security-key MFA. Check the platform’s compatibility and setup instructions. No MFA method guarantees that an account cannot be compromised.
Protect the linked email account
Email access can affect account alerts and recovery, so use a distinct password, enable MFA, and pay attention to unexpected sign-in or security-change notifications. CISA’s social media guidance specifically includes protecting linked email as part of organizational account security.

Review connected apps and authorized people
Remove apps you no longer use or do not recognize, and check which people can access the account. Limiting access reduces the number of credentials, sessions, and permissions that must be trusted. CISA recommends organizations vet vendors and review third-party access.
For organizations: assign access deliberately
Where the platform provides corporate-account or role features, use them to give each staff member only the access needed for their work. Keep credentials individual rather than shared, review authorized users regularly, and monitor unusual activity, logins, and permission changes. CISA’s recommendations are organizational guidance; individual users can apply the same principles by limiting account access and checking app permissions.
Choosing an MFA method
Compare MFA options by two practical criteria: resistance to phishing and whether the social platform and the user’s devices support the method. CISA’s business guidance lists the following order of strength:
| MFA method | CISA’s relative guidance | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Security key | Strongest option listed in CISA’s business guidance | Use only if the platform supports security keys and the user can enroll a compatible key. |
| Authenticator method | Listed after security keys | Confirm which authenticator options the service accepts and configure recovery methods. |
| Biometrics | Listed after authenticator methods | Availability and implementation depend on the service and device. |
| Text or email code | Listed after biometrics | May be the available option on some accounts; use the strongest supported alternative when possible. |
The ranking is CISA’s business guidance, not a guarantee that every platform offers all four choices or implements them identically. CISA’s archived “More than a Password” guidance explains the FIDO fake-site protection in context: More than a Password.
