Scammers use link shorteners to put one destination behind many short addresses and to show that destination different content depending on who is asking. In a first-person account dated August 31, 2026, Caspar von Wrede, who operates a small link-shortening service, describes one destination that drew 89,826 clicks in 48 hours through three short slugs, answered each type of requester differently, and came back after deletion through new domains that reused the original slugs. The telemetry and conclusions below are his account of his own service, not an independent audit.

How the spike surfaced

The operator describes a weekly review of roughly 75,000 stored links. An automated, read-only scan flags suspicious link and domain patterns, and people make the deletion decisions. He says the same screening applies to new submissions and that existing links are periodically rescored. He frames the work as protecting the service’s search reputation.

The signals the scan looks for, as he lists them, are:

  • Cheap domains
  • Brand names placed oddly in the domain or path
  • Nested shorteners, where a short link leads to another shortener
  • Login-like URL paths

Why volume was the first clue

The destination in this case did not look unusual. The path appeared ordinary. What stood out was volume: 89,826 clicks in 48 hours, which the author reports was more than all other activity on the service combined. Three short slugs pointed to the same destination. Neither signal proves fraud on its own, but the combination is what prompted a closer look.

  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

For a shortener operator, this is the practical starting point. A campaign rarely announces itself through the destination. It shows up in the link graph: several aliases, one target, and a sudden concentration of clicks.

One address, three answers

A single fetch of the destination would have shown only one version of the page. The author fetched it from different contexts and got different results. He summarises the finding this way: “One address, three answers, depending on what you used to access it.”

What the larger response checked

According to the author, the 42,748-byte response tested the visitor for signs of browser automation (Selenium or Puppeteer traces), ad blocking, pointer movement, graphics hardware, screen size, battery status, and time zone. If the checks failed, he says the code silently did nothing. The effect, in his reading, is that a reviewer using automation or a data-center address sees a harmless page, while a phone user in the targeted context receives the rest.

The practical lesson is that a clean result from one environment proves little. A scanner that fetches once from one place can record a benign redirect and move on.

Who was clicking

Per the author’s campaign telemetry, four in five clicks came from a Facebook-owned client. Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela together accounted for 40% of all clicks, and seven of the top nine countries were Spanish-speaking. The author infers that the advertising network localized the ultimate page using per-country fields. That is his interpretation of traffic and response patterns, not something he observed directly.

The takedown that did not hold

The operator first deleted the links and blocked the original destination. Four hours later the links returned under the same slugs, and two new domains were forwarding visitors to the original destination. He then reserved the deleted slugs so they could not be reclaimed. The old short URL began resolving to not found. The Facebook posts that carried the links, however, kept producing traffic 24 hours later.

Comparing response approaches

The case isolates three operational choices that a shortener operator makes. The table sets each approach against what the author reports it did.

Approach What the case shows
Destination-only blocking Blocking the original destination did not stop the campaign; links returned four hours later through new domains.
Campaign-level remediation Deleting links, tracking intermediary domains, and reserving slugs targeted the whole pattern. The old short URL resolved to not found, but Facebook posts still drove traffic 24 hours later.
Single-context scanning A fetch from an ordinary laptop returns a benign redirect to Google, so it misses the campaign entirely.
Multi-context behavior inspection Fetches from a laptop, a data-center server, and an Android in-app browser exposed three different answers.
Deleting an alias Deleted slugs were reclaimed by the returning links.
Reserving a deleted alias The same slugs stopped being reclaimed, according to the author.

Why this fits a broader redirect threat

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) published a public service announcement on June 18, 2026 describing traffic distribution systems (TDS). Its key line is: “The TDS uses a complex chain of intermediate nodes to hide the final malicious destination, making it difficult to trace and block.” According to the advisory, these systems can be reached through social engineering, compromised sites, or fraudulent ads, and they can fingerprint visitors and selectively serve malicious content. The FBI advises users to check URL authenticity and advises organizations to patch components and harden account access.

The overlap with this case is partial. Both involve intermediate hops and visitor-dependent responses. The author, however, does not identify the campaign as a TDS, and not every shortener abuse campaign uses one.

Defending the redirect itself

OWASP’s Cheat Sheet Series entry on unvalidated redirects explains the attacker’s motive: a trusted site’s name can make a malicious destination look credible. Its guidance includes:

  • Avoid letting users control destinations directly.
  • Where possible, “have the user provide short name, ID or token which is mapped server-side to a full target URL.”
  • When external destinations are unavoidable, validate parsed URLs against explicit allowlists.
  • Consider an interstitial page that displays the destination before the visitor continues.

Platform moderation and collateral damage

Blocking has costs. X’s Help Center pages on link blocking describe warnings, blocks, and reduced visibility for links. Its decisions weigh source and confidence, content severity, and sharing context. X also acknowledges that links can be miscategorized and asks people who believe a flag is wrong to submit the extended URL.

A 2025 IEEE paper by researchers at KOR Labs and the University of Grenoble Alpes studied misused URL-shortening services. Its authors argue that reports directed at a shortener can enable targeted deactivation of a malicious alias, while domain-wide suspension can disrupt unrelated legitimate links. Their URL-shortener classifier reached 98.4% precision on their study data, and the median time to mitigation for malicious links on the ten most abused services in the study was within 48 hours. These are measurements from that study, not guarantees of current response times at any service.

For older context, Gupta, Aggarwal, and Kumaraguru reported 80.43% classification accuracy in 2014 using a random-forest approach on Bitly URL data they evaluated. That result concerns an older suspicious-link dataset and does not describe Bitly’s current performance.

What this case does and does not establish

  • Established by the author’s account: the timing, the click totals, the three recorded responses, the slug reuse, and the takedown sequence. These come from one operator’s telemetry and have not been independently audited.
  • Not established: who runs the campaign, the final scam offer shown to visitors, confirmed victim losses, or whether these figures are representative of shorteners generally.
  • Distinction to keep: response sizes, referrers, click counts, and slug reuse are direct observations. The account of the ad network’s localization and of the operator’s intent is interpretation.
