Researchers turned waste blue mussel shells into a nest-like form of calcium carbonate called soft calcite. In a 2020 study, the material adsorbed dyes from water and absorbed crude oil from seawater. It is an experimental absorbent—not an ordinary sponge or a proven, large-scale ocean-cleanup product.
What is the inorganic sponge?
“Inorganic sponge” describes the material’s porous, sponge-like structure and absorbent behavior. The material itself is soft calcite, a form of calcium carbonate made from discarded blue mussel shells. Unlike a household sponge, it is not a polymer foam; unlike the original shell, its calcite has a loosely assembled, nest-like morphology.

How did researchers make it from mussel shells?
At a high level, the team heated waste shells and treated them with acid at room temperature. That treatment disrupted the shell’s calcite crystals; with gentle stirring, the material reassembled into agglomerates with a nest-like structure. The resulting calcium carbonate remained calcite, but its arrangement differed from the more ordered mineral in the shell. The authors suggest that leftover organic material from the shell may help hold the reassembled structure together.

This is a description of the research approach, not a reproducible home recipe. The accessible study summary does not provide all the procedural details needed to replicate the material, and simply mixing shell powder with vinegar should not be expected to produce the same absorbent.
What pollutants did the study test it against?
- Dyes: The paper reports adsorption of dyes from aqueous solution. Adsorption means molecules attach to a material’s surface; it is distinct from a liquid simply soaking into a sponge.
- Crude oil: The paper reports absorption of crude oil from seawater.
- Reuse: The authors describe the material as having good recyclability, but the accessible record does not establish a cycle count or a quantified performance figure.
These are laboratory research findings. The available sources do not provide a numerical uptake capacity, oil-absorption ratio, or comparable measurements that would support ranking soft calcite against commercial sorbents.

Does it offer a practical way to clean ocean oil spills?
Not on the evidence reported. The findings suggest a possible research direction, but they do not establish deployment at sea, field-scale effectiveness, or a commercially available cleanup product. Senior author Francesca M. Kerton said that scalability and the cost of making the material would limit its use for oil cleanup. Memorial University’s 2020 release also described biomedical applications as an area the team was interested in exploring—not a demonstrated medical use.

To judge whether soft calcite could become a practical sorbent, further evidence would need to address measured uptake, which contaminants it captures selectively, regeneration and reuse, how easily it can be handled, production cost and scale, and the environmental effects of making and disposing of it. The sources reporting this study do not establish those comparisons.

Is the mussel-shell sponge available to buy?
The cited study and university release do not identify a consumer product or establish that the material is commercially available. The work demonstrates a promising way to convert shell waste into a tested absorbent; it does not support a purchasing recommendation.
