Brandon Thomas, the developer behind ArtCraft, has announced three open-source projects presented as alternatives to Microsoft Office apps: GridCraft for Excel, DeckCraft for PowerPoint, and WordCraft for Word. Tom’s Hardware reported on October 11, 2026, that the apps were created with Claude and shared on ArtCraft GitHub for free download. The report also warns that most remain far from the products they aim to replace, so the announcement is not evidence of Microsoft Office feature parity.
What are GridCraft, DeckCraft, and WordCraft?
The three projects are named after the Microsoft apps they aim to emulate:

Tom’s Hardware attributes the announcement to Brandon Thomas, who develops ArtCraft, an open-source suite intended to replicate Adobe applications. That background explains the “clone” comparison, but it is not an independent assessment of either ArtCraft or the newly announced Office alternatives.

According to Jhet Borja’s October 11, 2026 report for Tom’s Hardware, Claude was used to create the applications, and the projects were shared to ArtCraft GitHub for free download. “Created with Claude” does not establish how much code or design work was generated by AI, or how the projects were tested. The report does not provide repository documentation or a detailed development account.

The report describes the projects as open source, but the available information does not establish their specific software licenses, maintenance plans, security status, or long-term availability. Free download alone does not answer those questions.
Can they replace Excel, PowerPoint, or Word?
There is not enough published evidence to treat any of the three as a dependable replacement. The report says most remain far from the products they are intended to replace and does not provide hands-on test results or a feature-by-feature comparison.

In particular, the available report does not establish whether the apps can open, edit, or preserve Microsoft Office files reliably. It also does not document supported operating systems, spreadsheet formulas or macros, document layout, collaboration, presentation animations or media, offline or cloud behavior, accessibility, privacy practices, or security review. Those capabilities should be checked in project documentation before relying on an app for important work.

- The project’s current release, operating-system requirements, and documented limitations.
- Its license and whether the repository shows active maintenance.
- Which file formats it imports and exports, then test a copy of a representative file for layout, formulas, media, and other features you need.
- Whether the project documents security, privacy, or telemetry behavior.
- Whether essential workflows work without losing data when moving between the new app and Microsoft Office.
Keep original files and backups, and do not use an unverified app as the sole copy of business-critical documents. These are prudent safeguards for evaluating software whose compatibility and security have not been established by the cited report.

The news is that three AI-assisted projects have been announced as open-source alternatives to familiar Microsoft apps and were reported as available to download for free. It does not show that the projects match Excel, PowerPoint, or Word, that they support particular Office formats, or that they are suitable for business use. The maturity caveat is central: their practical capabilities remain an open question.
