Amphenol Commercial’s IPC-M Series is a family of two-contact, cable-to-cable power connectors for high-current applications such as battery interconnects, energy storage, eMobility, industrial equipment, robotics, and DC distribution. Its four sizes cover different conductor ranges, but the published current figures are tied to specific contacts and configurations—not a universal rating for every finished connector or installation.

IPC-M Series at a glance

Use conductor size and the applicable contact rating to narrow the choice. Amphenol’s product pages and datasheets list these family limits:

Series Published current and basis Supported wire range Selection position
IPC-M50 Up to 50 A per 6 AWG contact; Amphenol also references UL-rated currents up to 120 A for applicable configurations 12–6 AWG Smallest-profile option for comparatively modest conductor sizes
IPC-M120 Up to 115 A per 2 AWG contact 6–2 AWG Midrange option for larger battery and industrial power wiring
IPC-M175 Up to 175 A per 1/0 contact 4 AWG–1/0 Higher-current option for larger conductors
IPC-M350 Up to 500 A per 350 MCM contact under the stated UL-rated condition 1/0–350 MCM Largest format for very high-current systems

These figures describe specific contact and conductor combinations; they are not interchangeable ratings for every wire size in each family. Consult the exact product documentation for the selected configuration: M50, M120, M175, and M350.

What the current and voltage ratings mean

Current is specified per contact

The IPC-M connectors have two contacts. When Amphenol states a rating such as 500 A per M350 contact, that is a per-contact figure—not a statement that the complete connector carries 1,000 A. Do not add the two contact ratings or assume current can be divided between contacts without validating the design. Actual usable current depends on the selected wire and contact, crimp quality, temperature, duty cycle, cable bundling, enclosure heat rejection, and the applicable certification conditions.

The distinction matters especially for the M50: its product information specifies up to 50 A per 6 AWG contact, while the M50 datasheet also references UL-rated currents up to 120 A in applicable configurations. Those figures reflect different stated conditions; do not treat 120 A as a general rating for every M50 assembly. See the M50 datasheet.

Voltage and thermal design are separate checks

The family is specified for operation up to 600 V AC/DC in Amphenol’s general specification: IPC-M general specification. That voltage figure does not establish that every custom assembly is suitable for any 600 V installation. System insulation, creepage and clearance, touch protection, circuit protection, disconnect procedures, and the exact connector configuration still need engineering review.

Size for both continuous current and transients. For a motor, inverter, charger, or battery system, account for peak-current duration and repetition as well as ambient temperature, cable routing, bundling, enclosure ventilation, and acceptable temperature rise. A headline maximum alone is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s applicable specification and thermal validation.

How the four sizes differ

IPC-M50: compact wiring

The M50 is the smallest-profile family member and supports 12–6 AWG wire. Its stated rating is up to 50 A per 6 AWG contact, with the separate UL-configuration qualification described above. Consider it for compact battery packs, smaller energy-storage wiring, robotics, or industrial DC distribution only when the exact wire, current, and thermal conditions fit. An undersized conductor or thermally constrained installation can make the compact option unsuitable.

Amphenol’s page lists M50 housings and contact choices; confirm that the contact gauge matches the actual cable rather than selecting by housing alone: IPC-M50 product information.

IPC-M120: intermediate conductor sizes

The M120 supports 6–2 AWG contact options and is rated up to 115 A per 2 AWG contact. It is a potential fit where M50 conductor capacity is insufficient but the larger M175 format is not needed. The rating is specific to the 2 AWG contact; choose the contact and cable combination using the manufacturer’s documentation, not by applying 115 A to every wire size.

See the M120 datasheet and M120 product page.

IPC-M175: larger battery and industrial wiring

The M175 accepts 4 AWG through 1/0 conductors and is rated up to 175 A per 1/0 contact. It may suit larger battery interconnects, EV-charger assemblies, and industrial equipment when the conductor, thermal design, and certification conditions align. Its larger contact and wire requirements also raise assembly and tooling demands compared with smaller sizes.

Amphenol’s M175 product documentation gives the relevant configuration details.

IPC-M350: very high-current conductors

The M350 supports 1/0 through 350 MCM conductors. Amphenol states up to 500 A per 350 MCM contact under the stated UL-rated condition. This is the family’s largest option, intended for designs whose conductor and power requirements justify its scale. Confirm the precise UL-rated configuration and system conditions rather than carrying the 500 A figure across other wire sizes or installations.

Keying, color, and cross-mating

Amphenol offers gray, blue, and red housings and describes the color-coded, mechanically keyed design as a way to help prevent cross-mating between circuits assigned different voltage systems. Color is a visual identification aid; the key is a physical mating constraint. Neither replaces electrical safeguards such as fusing, disconnects, interlocks where required, touch protection, or safe service procedures. Do not assume that every color maps to a particular voltage or a distinct key without confirming the exact part number and documentation.

Amphenol also says its connectors have been UL tested and approved when cross-mated with competitive connectors. That statement is not a blanket assurance of interchangeability with every competitor, every configuration, or every end-product installation. Verify the specific mating part and applicable certification before cross-mating. The manufacturer’s wording appears in its M350 datasheet; related product documentation includes the M120 datasheet and M175 datasheet.

Where IPC-M fits—and when to compare alternatives

The family is intended for serviceable high-current cable connections in applications including energy-storage systems, battery interconnects, eMobility, EV chargers, industrial equipment, robotics, and DC power distribution. It can be relevant for battery racks, removable modules, charger cables, robotics harnesses, or industrial mobile equipment when the required connector arrangement and environmental conditions match the selected configuration. Amphenol’s IPC family page outlines the range.

IPC-M is not automatically the right choice just because an application uses a battery or high current. Compare connector categories against the actual mounting, sealing, touch-protection, interlock, voltage, and certification needs:

  • Modular battery connectors: Anderson Power Products’ SB/SBX families may merit consideration where a modular battery ecosystem and field replacement are priorities. Confirm ratings, keying, environmental characteristics, and cable options for the exact series.
  • Automotive high-voltage connectors: TE Connectivity’s high-voltage families may be a better category to evaluate when the design requires vehicle-oriented sealing, touch protection, or HVIL-related features. Product complexity and validation needs can be greater.
  • Other Amphenol power families: SurLok and related Amphenol families may offer different form factors or system features. They are not assumed to be mechanically compatible with IPC-M.

Compare exact series and configurations. No family-level label establishes interchangeability or suitability for a particular end product.

What to specify before ordering

Treat the connector as a system of housing, contacts, wire, mating half, and controlled assembly—not as a single plug SKU. Work through these checks before placing an order:

  1. Calculate the load: establish continuous and peak current, transient duration, repetition, and operating voltage.
  2. Choose conductor and contact: confirm cable gauge and strand construction, then select the matching contact option within the series.
  3. Check the rating basis: confirm whether the published current applies per contact and whether the chosen configuration matches the stated wire and listing conditions.
  4. Set the keying convention: identify the required housing color and mechanical key from the exact part number; do not buy by appearance alone.
  5. Confirm the connection arrangement: determine whether the need is cable-to-cable, cable-to-device, or panel-mounted. IPC-M is primarily a cable-to-cable family, so verify the required mating arrangement.
  6. Review thermal and environmental conditions: account for temperature, enclosure, routing, bundling, vibration, strain relief, and expected mating frequency.
  7. Check assembly capability: identify the approved crimp method and tooling for the exact contact, and ensure inspection can be performed consistently.
  8. Verify certification and mating half: confirm the exact housing, contact, wire, and mating connector against the relevant documentation and end-product requirements.
  9. Build the bill of materials: determine the number of housing halves and contacts required, plus any application-specific mounting or strain-relief components. Housings and contacts may be separate SKUs.
  10. Verify stock as a complete set: check availability of matching housings, contacts, and mating parts in the quantities needed; a listing for one component does not establish that a complete connection is available.

Assembly and validation

High-current crimps require controlled process and inspection. At a high level, assembly involves selecting the correct housing and contacts, preparing the cable to the applicable specification, crimping with approved tooling, inspecting the crimp, inserting and retaining the contacts in the housing, mating the documented counterpart, and routing and securing the cable to prevent strain.

Use Amphenol’s current application specification for exact strip lengths, crimp settings, tooling, retention checks, and extraction procedures. Do not infer those values from a distributor listing or product photograph. After assembly, perform continuity and polarity checks and any insulation or high-potential testing required by the product’s safety procedure. IPC-M alone does not provide circuit protection, isolation, precharge, arc suppression, or a high-voltage interlock.

Common selection and assembly errors

  • Applying a maximum to every wire size: published figures are tied to specified contact and conductor configurations.
  • Adding two contact ratings: two contacts do not make a validated system-level current rating twice the per-contact value.
  • Buying a housing without contacts: verify that the contact gauge, quantity, and mating parts are also included in the order plan.
  • Choosing by color alone: match the exact housing and key part number, not just a color that looks right.
  • Using an unqualified crimp or mating half: poor crimping, incomplete contact insertion, cable strain, contamination, or a nonqualified mating connector can cause overheating or intermittent connections.
  • Assuming EV marketing means a complete charging interface: the connector does not by itself establish that a design has required locking, protection, interlock, or vehicle-system features.

For final design approval, consult the relevant drawings, application specifications, and certification records. The family-level figures presented here do not establish dimensional fit, ingress protection, operating-temperature limits, contact resistance, touch safety, or short-circuit capability for an unspecified configuration.
