The U.S. consumer Platinum Card from American Express has an $895 annual fee. Its lounge access, hotel credits and status can make it worthwhile for frequent travelers who can use the benefits under their terms; the advertised benefits are not guaranteed savings, and their value depends on your travel patterns and eligible purchases.
What the Amex Platinum costs—and how to judge its value
American Express lists the card’s annual fee as $895. Its fee explainer, updated July 17, 2026, advertises more than $3,500 in annual benefit value, but that figure is the issuer’s valuation, not cash back or a guaranteed return. Many benefits require enrollment, eligible purchases, qualifying bookings or use at participating businesses. American Express’s fee explainer lists benefits including Uber Cash, a digital entertainment credit, a Resy credit, CLEAR+, an airline incidental credit and hotel credits; each has its own conditions.
A more useful test is to count only benefits you would realistically use, at a value you would actually pay for them. Include the cost of supplementary cards if you plan to add them, and consider whether the eligible booking channels and participating locations match your habits. Do not count a credit at face value if it would lead you to spend more than you otherwise would.

What airport lounge access does the card include?
American Express advertises access to more than 1,550 lounges through its Global Lounge Collection, a figure it dates to January 2026. The collection includes Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass and select partner lounges. The headline count does not establish that a lounge will be available at your airport or admit you at the time you travel. Check the current card details and lounge finder for your specific airports and itinerary.

Centurion Lounges
U.S. Platinum Card Members can access Centurion Lounges subject to space availability. The lounge terms generally require a valid card and a same-day departing-flight boarding pass with a matching name. Entry is generally allowed within three hours of departure, with a separate rule for connecting itineraries. Guest fees apply unless the member qualifies for complimentary guest access. American Express states: “All access to The Centurion Lounge is subject to space availability.” See the Global Lounge Collection terms for current details.
Delta Sky Clubs
The card provides 10 Delta Sky Club “Visits” per eligible card each year, subject to qualifying same-day Delta or certain Delta-marketed travel. Delta Main Basic (Basic Economy) tickets are excluded. A visit is defined as access for up to 24 hours from first entry, or a Grab and Go use during qualifying travel. Check the terms for current location participation and rules.

Priority Pass and other partner lounges
Priority Pass requires enrollment through the American Express account or by calling the number on the card. Guest admission depends on the lounge: up to two accompanying guests may be complimentary where guests are admitted, while additional guests may incur program fees. Some lounges restrict guest access or may deny entry. Partner rules and availability can change.

How the hotel credit works
The card offers up to $300 in statement credits twice per calendar year—up to $600 per calendar year total—on eligible prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings made through American Express Travel. The Hotel Collection requires a minimum two-night stay. The issuer says the eligible collection includes more than 3,100 hotels, but that does not mean every hotel reservation qualifies. A direct booking or a reservation through another booking site will not meet the stated booking-channel requirement. See American Express’s fee and benefit terms.
Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings may include daily breakfast for two, a $100 property credit for eligible charges, guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout, noon check-in when available and room upgrades when available. Not every benefit has the same certainty: check-in and upgrades depend on availability, while the issuer describes 4 p.m. checkout as guaranteed. The value of property benefits varies by hotel, room rate, availability and how much of the benefit you use.
Does the card give you hotel status?
American Express lists complimentary status with Leaders Club, Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy. Enrollment is required, and benefits apply subject to each program’s rules and participating properties. Verify your enrollment and the current terms before relying on a status benefit.

How Membership Rewards points are earned
American Express lists 5X Membership Rewards points on eligible flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel, up to $500,000 in those purchases per calendar year. Eligible prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel also earn 5X. Other purchases earn 1X under the issuer’s published terms. These bonus rates depend on both purchase category and booking channel; they do not apply to every travel purchase. The cited issuer materials do not establish a fixed cash value for points, so assess rewards using the redemption options you would actually use. See the card’s current earning terms.

The card is a stronger fit for travelers whose routines line up with its conditions: they visit airports with lounges they can enter, take qualifying Delta flights if they expect to use Sky Club Visits, book prepaid stays through Amex Travel, and use enrolled status at participating hotels. Its earning rates may also suit people who book eligible flights directly with airlines or through Amex Travel and prepaid hotels through Amex Travel.
Best Value
It is harder to justify if you rarely travel, prefer booking hotels directly or through other sites, cannot use the statement credits naturally, or expect every advertised benefit to work like cash. Before applying, compare the $895 annual fee with the benefits you would independently use, not the issuer’s aggregate valuation.

There is no single best premium travel card for every traveler. Compare options against the airports, booking habits and benefits that matter to you rather than relying on a headline lounge count or an advertised benefit total.
