On April 27, 2023, AMD said it had distributed new AGESA firmware to AM5 motherboard makers to keep Ryzen 7000 processors within specification limits, including a 1.3 V cap on SoC voltage. AMD recommended that owners check their motherboard maker’s support site for the appropriate BIOS update. The announcement was a dated response to CPU failure reports, not a single BIOS release applicable to every AM5 board.

What AMD announced about Ryzen 7000 failures

AMD told Tom’s Hardware it had identified the cause of the issue and sent motherboard partners updated AGESA firmware. The measures applied to certain AM5 power rails; AMD named a maximum SoC voltage of 1.3 V as one safeguard. The report discussed failures involving both Ryzen 7000X3D processors and standard Ryzen 7000 models. AMD’s follow-up addressed Ryzen 7000 broadly, but did not provide a complete list of affected processor models or a failure rate.

AMD’s statement described the safeguard this way: “We have root caused the issue and have already distributed a new AGESA that puts measures in place on certain power rails on AM5 motherboards to prevent the CPU from operating beyond its specification limits, including a cap on SOC voltage at 1.3V.” (Tom’s Hardware, April 27, 2023)

Why the update comes as a motherboard BIOS

AGESA is AMD’s firmware component supplied to motherboard manufacturers. The update users install is normally distributed by the board maker as a BIOS or UEFI release. Since each vendor and board model has its own release, there is no one BIOS version that applies to all AM5 systems.

How to check for the right BIOS update

  1. Identify the exact motherboard model and hardware revision. Check the board itself or the system information provided by its manufacturer; similar model names can have separate support pages.
  2. Open that motherboard maker’s official support page and select the matching model and revision.
  3. Review the BIOS/UEFI releases and their vendor-published notes. Choose an appropriate release for your board, checking whether it is stable or beta and following the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
  4. After installing, confirm the system boots and review firmware settings before re-enabling any custom memory or performance profiles.

AMD’s recommendation, as reported by Tom’s Hardware, was to check the exact motherboard manufacturer’s website for the latest software for the processor. The report does not identify a current BIOS version for any particular board, so use that board maker’s page rather than a version number from another model.

Does the 1.3 V SoC limit disable EXPO, XMP, or PBO?

AMD said the firmware measures would not remove memory overclocking with EXPO or XMP kits, or performance boosting with Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO). Its representative told Tom’s Hardware: “None of these changes affect the ability of our Ryzen 7000 Series processors to overclock memory using EXPO or XMP kits or boost performance using PBO technology.” (Tom’s Hardware, April 27, 2023)

The report also noted that an EXPO profile does not necessarily set SoC voltage itself; motherboard firmware may choose a voltage setting to support a selected memory profile. That distinction does not establish that EXPO alone caused the failures. AMD’s assurance was that these safeguards would preserve the ability to use EXPO or XMP memory profiles and PBO boosting.

What to do if you think your CPU was affected

A firmware safeguard is not a repair for a processor that has already been damaged. AMD advised owners whose CPU might have been affected to contact AMD customer support. Tom’s Hardware’s account does not establish that installing the update restores damaged hardware.

What the April 2023 statement did—and did not—establish

The announcement documented AMD’s response and a specific voltage safeguard. It did not publish an independently verified count of failures, a failure rate, or a definitive list of affected SKUs. Keep those limits in mind when interpreting individual reports or deciding whether a particular processor was affected.

For corroborating context on a motherboard maker’s response at the time, see AnandTech’s coverage of ASUS’s statement. It is historical reporting, not a substitute for the current support page for a specific motherboard.
