A March 2024 leak claimed an SP5 motherboard could support up to 4TB of RAM at DDR5-6000 with an AMD Turin processor. That was a motherboard-listing claim, not an AMD-confirmed specification. AMD’s later EPYC 9005 documentation confirms Turin’s memory architecture, but does not verify that particular 4TB-at-6000 configuration.

What the Turin leak actually claimed

On March 25, 2024, Tom’s Hardware reported a leaked SP5 motherboard listing attributed to leaker @momomo_us. The listing claimed support for up to 4TB of RAM and DDR5 speeds up to 6000 MT/s when paired with a Turin CPU, with lower listed memory speeds for other processors. The report cautioned that the information was unconfirmed. Read the original report.

The key distinction is that the claim described a particular motherboard listing. It did not establish a general specification for every Turin processor or SP5 motherboard, nor did it demonstrate that 4TB can run at 6000 MT/s in a working system.

What AMD’s later EPYC 9005 specifications confirm

AMD identifies Turin as the codename for its Zen 5-based EPYC 9005 server processors, which use the SP5 socket. The architecture overview lists twelve DDR5 memory channels, support for up to two DIMMs per channel, and a common-feature maximum DDR5 speed of 6000 MT/s. • Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

That overview’s capacity figure requires careful reading: its 8TB maximum combines 6TB of DDR memory and 2TB of CXL memory, under stated assumptions of 256GB DDR DIMMs at two DIMMs per channel and eight 256GB CXL cards. It is not 8TB of system RAM or 8TB of DDR5.

Capacity and speed vary by configuration

AMD’s EPYC 9005 model data sheet lists up to 6TB maximum memory at two DIMMs per channel (2DPC), and up to 6400 MT/s at one DIMM per channel (1DPC) for the models included in its table. Those figures describe different DIMM populations and should not be collapsed into one promise that every processor can run maximum capacity at maximum speed. AMD’s October 10, 2024 launch release provides a concrete 6000 MT/s example: a two-socket Turin test configuration with 24 64GB DDR5-6400 modules running at 6000 MT/s, for 1.5TB total. This verifies an example of 6000 MT/s operation, not the leaked 4TB configuration. AMD’s EPYC 9005 launch announcement.

How to interpret the capacity and speed figures

Figure What it refers to What it does not establish
4TB at up to 6000 MT/s A leaked SP5 motherboard listing reported by Tom’s Hardware in March 2024; explicitly unconfirmed. AMD-validated support or a tested 4TB system operating at 6000 MT/s.
6000 MT/s maximum AMD’s EPYC 9005 architecture overview’s common-feature entry for DDR5. A guaranteed speed for every CPU, board, DIMM population, and memory kit.
Up to 6TB at 2DPC AMD’s EPYC 9005 model data sheet, for the models in its table. That every model or board supports 6TB at the highest listed speed.
Up to 6400 MT/s at 1DPC AMD’s model data sheet for the listed EPYC 9005 models at one DIMM per channel. The same speed at two DIMMs per channel.
8TB combined capacity AMD’s architecture overview: 6TB DDR plus 2TB CXL using its stated component assumptions. 8TB of DDR5 or conventional system RAM.

What to check before building or buying

Do not select memory based on the leak alone. Confirm the exact processor and board documentation, then check the board’s qualified vendor list (QVL) and population rules for the intended capacity and speed. DIMM population matters: AMD’s published figures distinguish one from two DIMMs per channel, and the supported speed can change with the configuration.

Kingston’s Turin memory guide describes twelve channels and up to 24 DIMMs per processor, with up to 6TB per processor. It emphasizes module type, ECC configuration, and matching module characteristics; it also says Turin does not support DDR5 UDIMMs, LRDIMMs, NVDIMM-N, or NVDIMM-P. Use compatible server memory such as DDR5 ECC Registered DIMMs (RDIMMs), and verify the exact processor and motherboard requirements before purchase. Kingston’s AMD EPYC 9005 (Turin) memory guide.

  • Check the processor model’s memory specifications, not just the EPYC 9005 family headline figures.
  • Confirm the motherboard supports the processor, target DIMM count, module capacity, and intended speed.
  • Follow the vendor’s channel population order and use memory modules listed or validated for that board.
  • Distinguish DDR capacity from any CXL memory capacity in platform-level figures.
