AMD’s October 2024 holiday promotion discounted four standard Ryzen 9000 desktop processors by $30–$50, while the company teased its Ryzen 9000 X3D chips for November 7. If you were choosing between a discounted CPU and waiting for an X3D model, the key distinction was the intended use: X3D’s extra cache is aimed at gaming, while the regular Ryzen 9000 models were already available at lower promotional prices. The promotion was a 2024 event, not a current offer.
Which Ryzen 9000 CPUs received the holiday discounts?
PCWorld reported on October 21, 2024 that AMD’s promotion had begun the previous day. The discounts were offered to channel partners, and AMD said final street prices varied by retailer rather than being fixed company-wide. These are PCWorld’s maximum-discount examples from 2024, not current prices:

| Ryzen 9 9950X | $649 | $599 | $50 |
AMD gave no end date for the offer in PCWorld’s October 21 report. The company said retailers such as Amazon and Newegg determined dynamic street prices, so actual offers could differ. PCWorld’s October 21, 2024 report has the contemporaneous promotion details.
When did Ryzen 9000 X3D launch, and what changed after the teaser?
AMD initially teased Ryzen 9000 X3D for November 7, 2024, but offered few product details at the time. On January 6, 2025, AMD officially announced two models, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X3D, and said they were expected on shelves in Q1 2025. That later announcement superseded the teaser as the source for confirmed specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
| Officially announced model | Cores / threads | Maximum boost clock | Total cache in AMD’s announcement | TDP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 9 9950X3D | 16 / 32 | Up to 5.7 GHz | 144 MB | 170W |
| Ryzen 9 9900X3D | 12 / 24 | Up to 5.5 GHz | 140 MB | 120W |
These are specifications AMD listed in its January 6, 2025 announcement, not independent performance measurements. Early model expectations reported before the announcement were leaks and should not be treated as confirmed specifications. AMD’s CES 2025 announcement gives the official specifications and expected availability window.
What is different about Ryzen X3D?
More cache for workloads that benefit from it
Ryzen X3D chips use stacked 3D V-Cache. For second-generation 3D V-Cache, AMD says it moved the cache beneath the core complex die (CCD), bringing the Zen 5 cores closer to the cooling solution. AMD says this design is intended to support higher clock speeds, lower temperatures and better performance than the previous generation. Those are the manufacturer’s goals and claims; the announcement itself is not an independent benchmark showing how much faster a chip is in a particular game or application.

- AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D Gaming and Content Creation Processor
- Max. Boost Clock : Up to 5.7 GHz; Base Clock: 4.3 GHz
- Form Factor: Desktops , Boxed Processor
- Architecture: Zen 5; Former Codename: Granite Ridge AM5
Gaming is the reason to consider X3D, not a guarantee of a win
The X3D label signals a processor designed with gaming performance in mind, but it does not establish that an X3D model will outperform every regular Ryzen 9000 CPU in every game, or that it is the better value for every buyer. The supplied specifications show core counts, clocks, cache and TDP; they do not provide comparable independent gaming or productivity test results. For a purchase decision, compare current reviews and benchmarks for the exact games and work applications you use, alongside the prices available where you live.

Should you buy a discounted standard Ryzen 9000 or choose X3D?
The October 2024 promotion made regular Zen 5 more attractive at the time, but those specific offers were temporary. For a current purchase, compare live prices rather than relying on the historical promotional figures. Choose according to the workload and total build cost:
Rank #3
- The best for creators meets the best for gamers, can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- 16 Cores and 32 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
- 5.7 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 80 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
- Cooler not included, liquid cooler recommended
- Prioritize a lower CPU purchase price: A regular Ryzen 9000 chip may make more sense if it meets your needs and costs less than the X3D option you are considering. The 2024 discount examples are useful as historical context only.
- Prioritize gaming: Consider an X3D model if current independent tests show a meaningful improvement in the games you play at a price you consider worthwhile. AMD’s design claims alone do not quantify that benefit.
- Do substantial productivity work: Compare application benchmarks and core counts rather than assuming extra cache is useful in every workload. The 9950X3D has 16 cores and 32 threads, while the 9900X3D has 12 cores and 24 threads, according to AMD’s announcement.
- Compare the whole platform: Include an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory in your budget. A CPU price difference is only one part of the cost of a build or upgrade.
- Check stock and price at purchase time: Availability and retailer pricing change. AMD’s product page showed the 9900X3D at $599 and out of stock when accessed in 2026; that is a dated snapshot, not a guaranteed current price or availability.
Does a Ryzen 9000 X3D processor need a new motherboard?
No new socket is indicated for the Ryzen 9 9900X3D: AMD lists it as an AM5 processor. The 9900X3D also supports PCI Express 5.0 and DDR5 memory. If you are upgrading an existing AM5 system, check your specific motherboard’s CPU support list and BIOS requirements before buying; socket compatibility by itself does not confirm that every board can boot the processor without an update. A system using a different socket or DDR4 memory would require a broader platform change to use this AM5, DDR5 processor.
AMD’s current Ryzen 9 9900X3D product page lists Zen 5 architecture, 12 cores and 24 threads, a 4.4 GHz base clock, boost up to 5.5 GHz, 128 MB of L3 cache, 120W default TDP, PCIe 5.0, DDR5, a 4 nm CPU die and a 6 nm I/O die. Its 128 MB L3 figure is not the same label as the 140 MB total-cache figure in AMD’s launch announcement, so compare like-for-like cache categories rather than treating those numbers as interchangeable.
