In June 2024, AMD said its then-upcoming standard Ryzen 9000 processors were not expected to overtake the Zen 4 Ryzen 7 7800X3D in gaming. The comparison AMD named was specifically the 7800X3D versus the Ryzen 7 9700X, and the company expected the X3D chip’s lead to be smaller than usual. That was AMD’s forecast—not an independent benchmark result or a claim about every Ryzen 9000 model.
What AMD said about Ryzen 9000 and gaming
At Computex 2024, Tom’s Hardware asked Donny Woligroski, AMD Senior Technical Marketing Manager of Consumer Processors, whether the Ryzen 9 9950X would claim the fastest-gaming-chip crown. Woligroski said Ryzen 9000 was faster than the competition in AMD’s tests, but added that “X3D is still the king of the hill” by a smaller margin than typically separates X3D and non-X3D chips. He specifically said the Ryzen 7 7800X3D would be faster in games than the then-upcoming Ryzen 7 9700X, though perhaps not by as much as expected. Tom’s Hardware published the interview report on June 11, 2024.
Which processors the comparison covered
The headline refers to AMD’s expectation for its standard, non-X3D Ryzen 9000 desktop chips—not to a direct comparison between every Ryzen 9000 model and every X3D processor. The concrete gaming comparison in Woligroski’s answer was the Zen 4 Ryzen 7 7800X3D against the Zen 5 Ryzen 7 9700X. His response also addressed the Ryzen 9 9950X question by saying Ryzen 9000 was ahead of competing processors in AMD’s own tests, while preserving an X3D advantage in AMD’s comparison.
Those are two different comparisons: performance against competing products and performance against AMD’s own X3D chip. The comment was an attributed company statement made before the standard Ryzen 9000 launch, not a result established by independent launch reviews.

What later X3D results add—and what they don’t
In November 2024, AMD reported an average 8% generational game-performance uplift for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D over the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. That figure comes from AMD’s vendor testing at 1080p with high settings, using the game set and test systems described in AMD’s 2024 Ryzen 7 9800X3D performance material. AMD cautions that system configurations and results can vary. The 8% is therefore a vendor-reported average under those stated conditions, not an independent result or a general prediction for every game or setup.
That later comparison concerns two X3D processors; it does not test the 7800X3D against the standard 9700X and cannot confirm the specific June forecast. AMD’s current desktop processor lineup includes later Ryzen 9000X3D products, which are separate from the standard Ryzen 9000 chips discussed in the 2024 interview. A timeless claim that “Ryzen 9000” either does or does not beat an X3D processor blurs those distinct products and dates.

How to judge a Ryzen gaming comparison
A gaming ranking is meaningful only when the CPUs are tested under comparable conditions. Before treating a result as an answer for your own system, check:
- Exact CPU models: distinguish standard Ryzen 9000 chips from Ryzen 9000X3D chips.
- Games tested: results depend on the titles selected and can vary from game to game.
- Resolution and graphics card: these affect whether the CPU or GPU is limiting frame rates.
- Test setup: memory and the rest of the system matter to a fair comparison.
- Who produced the result and when: separate AMD’s vendor testing from independent reviews, and note the test date and conditions.
AMD’s 2024 9800X3D figure specifies 1080p high settings and identifies its test games and hardware; it should be read within those boundaries, rather than as a universal ranking.

Does the June 2024 statement answer whether to upgrade?
No. A pre-launch expectation about the 7800X3D and 9700X cannot determine whether an upgrade makes sense for a particular system today. That decision requires current, model-specific independent benchmarks in the games and at the settings you use. AMD’s separate claim of approximately 16% higher single-thread IPC for Zen 5 versus the preceding generation, shown on its product page, is an IPC comparison—not a direct measure of gaming frame rates.
