Verdict: The AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS remains a fast, well-balanced mobile processor for laptops and mini PCs in 2026. Its eight Zen 4 cores are strong for office work, programming, multitasking, content creation, and gaming systems with a discrete GPU. Its integrated Radeon 780M is one of the more capable laptop iGPUs of its generation, but it is best suited to esports, older games, and modern games played with reduced settings or resolution—not demanding AAA gaming at high quality. The value of a 7840HS system now depends more on its cooling, power limit, memory, display, battery, graphics card, upgradeability, and price than on the processor name alone.
What is the Ryzen 7 7840HS?
The Ryzen 7 7840HS is an AMD mobile processor from the Ryzen 7040HS family, code-named Phoenix. It combines eight Zen 4 CPU cores with an integrated RDNA 3 Radeon 780M GPU and a dedicated Ryzen AI engine. AMD announced the Ryzen 7040HS family on January 4, 2023, and said laptops were expected from OEM partners beginning in March 2023. AMD’s current product database separately lists the processor’s launch date as Q4 2023, so those dates should be understood as different company records rather than treated as one definitive retail launch date. AMD’s announcement provides the original announcement and availability timeline, while the current product page provides the specification database entry.
This is primarily a laptop processor and APU. It is also used in mini PCs and other compact OEM systems, which explains why AMD’s database can show a broader form-factor label. The FP7, FP7r2, and FP8 interfaces are mobile platform interfaces; the 7840HS is not a conventional retail AM5 desktop CPU that can be installed in an ordinary desktop motherboard. In practical consumer use, a laptop or mini-PC owner should treat it as non-upgradeable.
Decoding the name
- Ryzen 7: AMD’s upper-mainstream consumer performance tier.
- 7840: AMD’s 2023 mobile naming designation. In this family, the fourth digit identifies the Zen 4 architecture, while the final digit indicates the model position.
- HS: A high-performance mobile class aimed at relatively thin performance laptops. AMD describes HS processors as 35W-plus thin power-user or creator parts.
Do not assume that every Ryzen 7000 mobile processor uses Zen 4. For example, the Ryzen 7 7735HS is a Zen 3+ chip with Radeon 680M graphics, while the 7840HS is Zen 4 with Radeon 780M graphics. AMD’s Ryzen 7000 mobile processor guide is useful when comparing models with similar-looking names.

These are processor-level capabilities, not a promise that every laptop exposes every feature. A manufacturer can omit USB4, restrict display outputs, solder the memory, use a smaller SSD, or implement different power limits. Check the exact system specification before buying. AMD’s official Ryzen 7 7840HS specification page is the reference for the platform limits.
How fast is the Ryzen 7 7840HS?
The 7840HS is a strong eight-core mobile CPU, but there is no single performance score that represents every laptop or mini PC. The processor can be configured across a wide power range, and cooling, firmware, memory, and the system’s operating mode all affect sustained performance.

Examples of system-level performance
In the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 14APH G8, Notebookcheck measured 16,201 points in Cinebench R23 multi-core and 1,742 points in single-core. That is a useful example of the processor in a relatively compact laptop, but it is a result for that laptop’s power profile and cooling system—not a universal 7840HS score. The full Yoga Pro 7 review provides the system context.
A higher-powered Beelink GTR7 mini PC reached 17,214 Cinebench R23 multi-core points and 1,812 single-core points in Notebookcheck’s testing. The result illustrates why a well-cooled mini PC running around 54–65 W should not be directly compared with a thin 14-inch laptop configured for lower sustained power. See the Beelink GTR7 review for that configuration.
For everyday use, the 7840HS has more than enough CPU capacity for web browsing, office applications, software development, virtual meetings, multitasking, and most productivity workloads. It is also a good match for creator laptops, although video-editing performance depends on the application, memory, storage, media engine, and any discrete GPU in the system.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why 35–54 W matters
AMD’s current product page lists a 35–54 W default/configurable power range. AMD’s original launch material described the 7840HS as a 35–45 W processor. The newer 35–54 W listing and the original 35–45 W launch description are not necessarily contradictory: mobile manufacturers can configure the chip differently, and AMD’s product information has changed as the platform has been documented.
Power limits affect both CPU and integrated-GPU performance:
- A thin laptop may use a lower sustained CPU power limit to control heat, fan noise, and chassis temperature.
- A thicker gaming laptop can often sustain higher clocks for longer.
- A mini PC may be configured at 54–65 W or, depending on firmware, beyond AMD’s nominal range.
- Higher power can improve multi-core performance and Radeon 780M performance, but it increases heat, fan noise, and energy consumption.
- The advertised 5.1 GHz figure is a maximum boost clock, not a guaranteed sustained or all-core frequency.
When comparing reviews, record the laptop’s performance mode, sustained processor power, cooling design, RAM configuration, AC or battery state, and benchmark version. A score without that information can make two otherwise identical 7840HS systems look more comparable than they really are.
Radeon 780M gaming performance
The integrated Radeon 780M has 12 RDNA 3 compute units and a maximum clock of 2.7 GHz. It is unusually capable for an integrated laptop GPU, but it does not have dedicated VRAM. It uses the system’s memory, so dual-channel operation, memory speed, firmware, and the amount of power left after the CPU workload all matter.

Notebookcheck’s Radeon 780M analysis recorded the following examples on a specific test platform:
| Game | Example result | Settings |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V | About 58.8 fps | 1080p, High |
| The Witcher 3 | About 42 fps | 1080p, High |
| F1 2021 | About 65.1 fps | 1080p, High |
| Cyberpunk 2077, version 1.6 | About 39.3 fps | 1080p, Low |
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II | About 49 fps | 1080p, Basic |
These are test-platform examples rather than universal guarantees. A laptop with fast dual-channel LPDDR5X, a higher power limit, and effective cooling may perform better than a memory-limited or quiet configuration. Conversely, a system with one memory module, slow memory, or restricted firmware can leave performance on the table. Notebookcheck’s Radeon 780M analysis contains the test details.
What games is it suitable for?
- Good fit: esports titles, indie games, older games, strategy games, emulation, and casual gaming.
- Usually playable with compromises: modern AAA games at 720p or 1080p Low, reduced render scale, or upscaling.
- Poor fit: high-refresh-rate AAA gaming, demanding ray-traced games, native 1440p or 4K gaming, and GPU-heavy professional workloads.
For a Radeon 780M laptop, prioritize dual-channel or fast LPDDR5X memory and avoid assuming that a high-resolution OLED display means the iGPU can run games at the panel’s native resolution. A 2.8K or 3K display may look excellent for productivity while requiring a lower game-rendering resolution.
Ryzen AI: capable, but not Copilot+
The 7840HS includes AMD Ryzen AI hardware based on the company’s XDNA architecture. AMD rates its dedicated AI engine at up to 10 TOPS. That can support selected NPU-assisted functions when the laptop manufacturer, drivers, operating system, and applications provide support.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
It should not, however, be described as a modern Copilot+ PC processor. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC category requires an NPU capable of more than 40 TOPS, well above the 7840HS’s 10-TOPS rating. Microsoft’s Copilot+ requirements explain the threshold.
Windows Studio Effects are a more complicated case. Microsoft notes that some effects can work on NPUs below 40 TOPS, but availability depends on the device manufacturer, drivers, Windows build, and supported hardware. Therefore, a 7840HS laptop may offer some camera or conferencing acceleration without qualifying as a Copilot+ PC. Check the exact model rather than relying on a retailer’s broad use of the phrase AI PC. Microsoft’s Windows Studio Effects documentation provides the relevant compatibility context.
Memory, storage, displays, and connectivity
The processor supports dual-channel DDR5 or LPDDR5X. AMD lists DDR5-5600 and LPDDR5X-7500 support, along with an official maximum capacity of up to 256 GB. Those figures describe the platform capability; the actual system may have soldered memory, replaceable DDR5 SO-DIMMs, or a combination of both. Many laptops will support far less than 256 GB, so buyers must check the manufacturer’s implementation.

Memory configuration is especially important when using the Radeon 780M because the iGPU shares system memory bandwidth with the CPU. A laptop with single-channel memory or only 8 GB can be a poor match for this processor even if the CPU model looks impressive. For a new purchase, a configuration with adequate capacity and two-channel or high-bandwidth memory is preferable; verify whether the RAM can be upgraded before buying.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →At the platform level, the 7840HS supports PCIe 4.0 with 20 lanes, two native USB4 ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI 2.1, USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, and up to four displays. It also supports hardware encoding for H.264, H.265, and AV1, and decoding for H.264, H.265, VP9, and AV1. A particular laptop or mini PC may expose only some of these capabilities because the motherboard, port selection, firmware, display wiring, and OEM design determine what is available.
Thermals and battery life
AMD lists a maximum operating temperature of 100°C. A processor reaching a high temperature during a sustained workload is not automatically defective: mobile CPUs dynamically manage voltage, clocks, power, and temperature. The more useful questions are whether the system maintains its intended power level, how loud the fans become, whether performance throttles, and whether the keyboard or chassis remains comfortable.
There is no meaningful universal battery-life number for the 7840HS. Battery life belongs to the complete laptop design, including battery capacity, screen resolution, brightness, panel technology, refresh rate, wireless hardware, firmware, and power tuning. For example, a Linux test system with this processor used a 60 Wh battery, a 3K 14-inch display, 32 GB of LPDDR5-6400, and integrated Radeon 780M graphics. Its result describes that TUXEDO laptop, not every 7840HS machine. Phoronix’s Linux test illustrates why battery claims must be tied to a specific system.
A high-refresh display, discrete GPU, small battery, or aggressive performance mode can reduce runtime substantially. Conversely, a lower-resolution screen, larger battery, and conservative firmware profile can make a different 7840HS laptop last longer.

Laptops and mini PCs built around the 7840HS
The same processor can appear in very different products. Representative systems include compact creator laptops such as the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7, gaming-oriented Lenovo Legion Slim configurations, the Framework Laptop 16, Linux-focused systems such as the TUXEDO Pulse 14, and mini PCs from Beelink and Minisforum. These should be treated as examples of where the chip is used, not as evidence that all products deliver the same experience.
In a laptop with an RTX or Radeon discrete GPU, the 7840HS remains a capable CPU companion. The discrete GPU will usually determine gaming performance, while the laptop’s GPU power limit, cooling, display, and MUX or graphics-switching design can matter as much as the processor. In a mini PC, the 7840HS can provide an attractive combination of CPU performance and integrated graphics, but investigate memory, SSD quality, BIOS updates, wireless hardware, cooling, warranty, and support before assuming that a low price represents equal value.

Drivers and operating-system support
AMD lists Windows 10 64-bit, Windows 11 64-bit, RHEL x86-64, and Ubuntu x86-64 as supported operating systems. Processor support does not guarantee identical support for every laptop feature: the OEM controls the BIOS, power modes, fan behavior, display routing, sleep states, hotkeys, and often the graphics-switching implementation.
As of August 9, 2026, AMD’s 7840HS support page lists AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.7.1, marked WHQL Recommended and released July 28, 2026. Driver versions change, so treat that version as date-stamped information rather than a permanent recommendation. The AMD support page also recommends using the laptop manufacturer’s drivers first.
Recommended driver-recovery sequence
- Install the latest Windows or Linux updates.
- Find the exact laptop or mini-PC model on the manufacturer’s support page.
- Install the OEM chipset, graphics, BIOS, and firmware updates in the manufacturer’s recommended order.
- Use AMD’s Adrenalin package if the OEM package is unavailable or does not provide a needed feature.
- If the generic AMD driver causes display, sleep, brightness, external-monitor, or GPU-switching problems, return to the OEM graphics driver.
- On Linux, check the distribution’s kernel, Mesa, firmware, and AMD graphics stack. The Windows Adrenalin package is not a substitute for the Linux graphics stack.
When diagnosing a problem, record the exact system model, BIOS version, operating system, display connection, and whether the issue appeared after changing from an OEM driver to a generic one. That information is often more useful than the processor name alone.

| Processor | Main characteristics | Buying interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 7 8845HS | Zen 4, 8 cores/16 threads, up to 5.1 GHz, 24 MB cache, Radeon 780M, 35–54 W, Ryzen AI up to 16 TOPS | Nearly the same conventional CPU and iGPU class, but with a stronger NPU. Prefer it when the price and rest of the system are otherwise equal. |
| Ryzen 7 7840U | Zen 4, 8 cores/16 threads, up to 5.1 GHz, 24 MB cache, Radeon 780M, 15–30 W, 3.3 GHz base clock | Better suited to thinner, lower-power systems; the HS model is generally the stronger choice for sustained workloads if cooling is adequate. |
| Ryzen 7 7735HS | Zen 3+, 8 cores/16 threads, 6 nm, Radeon 680M, no Ryzen AI NPU | Can be good value when discounted, but it is not architecturally equivalent to the 7840HS despite the Ryzen 7000 branding. |
| Ryzen AI 300 series | Newer Zen 5-based platform with RDNA 3.5 graphics and a substantially more capable NPU | More relevant for current AI features, newer architecture, and platform longevity. |
| Ryzen AI 400 series | Zen 5, Radeon 800M graphics, and model-dependent NPU ratings of roughly 50–60 TOPS | Better suited to buyers prioritizing Copilot+ functionality and current integrated-AI capabilities, provided the system price is reasonable. |
The 8845HS is the closest AMD comparison. Its CPU core count, maximum clock, cache, power range, and Radeon 780M class are very similar to the 7840HS. The most obvious hardware difference is the NPU rating: up to 16 TOPS versus up to 10 TOPS. The conventional CPU and iGPU experience is therefore generally much closer than the model numbers suggest. AMD’s consumer comparison guide lists the relevant specifications.
Newer Ryzen AI 300 and 400 systems can offer a newer CPU architecture, stronger integrated graphics, and NPUs that are much better positioned for Copilot+ workloads. That does not automatically make them the better purchase: a discounted 7840HS laptop with a stronger discrete GPU, better screen, larger battery, or more upgradeable design can still be the better system. AMD’s announcements for the Ryzen AI 300 family and Ryzen AI 400 family provide the newer-platform context.
Is a Ryzen 7 7840HS system worth buying in 2026?
It can be, particularly when the system is substantially cheaper than newer alternatives and has a competent design. The processor remains fast enough for demanding everyday work, development, multitasking, creator applications, and gaming with a discrete GPU. A mini PC with fast dual-channel memory can also deliver strong CPU performance in a small enclosure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Be more cautious when a listing gives only the processor name. A 7840HS laptop with 8 GB of single-channel RAM, weak cooling, a dim display, a small battery, and no upgrade path may be a worse purchase than a newer laptop with a slower-looking processor but a better overall design.
Best Value

Buyer’s checklist
Before buying a 7840HS laptop or mini PC, verify the following:
- Exact model: The processor name is not enough. Look up independent testing for the complete system.
- Sustained power: Find out whether the manufacturer uses a 35 W, 45 W, 54 W, or another configuration and whether it applies on battery as well as AC power.
- Cooling: Check long-workload temperatures, fan noise, throttling, and performance mode behavior.
- Memory: Confirm capacity, channel configuration, speed, and whether the RAM is soldered or replaceable.
- Storage: Check the number of M.2 slots, PCIe generation, and whether the SSD can be replaced.
- Graphics: Identify any discrete GPU and its power limit. The 7840HS alone does not determine gaming performance.
- Display: Match resolution and refresh rate to the GPU. A high-resolution panel can be excellent for work but demanding for the Radeon 780M.
- Battery: Compare watt-hours and reviews of the complete laptop instead of searching for a generic 7840HS battery-life figure.
- Ports: Confirm whether the actual USB-C ports expose USB4, charging, and DisplayPort Alt Mode; processor-level support does not guarantee all three.
- Support: Check BIOS updates, OEM driver availability, Linux compatibility if relevant, warranty terms, and return options.
- Price: Compare the complete specification against Ryzen 7 8845HS and Ryzen AI 300/400 systems rather than comparing CPU model numbers alone.
Common Ryzen 7 7840HS misconceptions
- Does Ryzen 7000 mean Zen 4?
- No. AMD used several architectures in the mobile Ryzen 7000 family. The 7840HS is Zen 4, but the 7735HS is Zen 3+.
- Does 35–54 W mean the chip always consumes that much?
- No. It is a configurable processor power range. Actual consumption depends on firmware, workload, cooling, operating mode, and whether the system is plugged in.
- Is the Radeon 780M equivalent to a gaming graphics card?
- No. It is a strong integrated GPU that shares system memory. It is useful for many games but remains well below a modern discrete GPU in demanding titles.
- Does the 10-TOPS NPU make the laptop Copilot+ compatible?
- No. Microsoft’s Copilot+ requirement is more than 40 TOPS of NPU performance. Some individual AI-assisted features may still work if the OEM and software support them.
- Do all 7840HS laptops perform the same?
- No. Power limits, cooling, memory, firmware, display configuration, battery mode, and discrete-GPU sharing can create substantial differences.
- Can the 7840HS be installed in an AM5 desktop motherboard?
- No. It is a mobile FP7/FP7r2/FP8 processor used in OEM laptops, mini PCs, and compact systems, not a conventional socketed AM5 retail processor.

Is the Ryzen 7 7840HS a desktop processor?
It is a mobile processor that also appears in mini PCs. It uses mobile FP7, FP7r2, or FP8 interfaces and is not an AM5-compatible retail desktop CPU.
Should I buy a Ryzen 7 8845HS instead?
Choose the 8845HS when an otherwise equivalent system costs only slightly more, mainly because its NPU is rated up to 16 TOPS instead of 10 TOPS. The conventional CPU and Radeon 780M experience is broadly similar, so a substantially cheaper or better-equipped 7840HS system can still be the better value.
The Bottom Line
The Ryzen 7 7840HS is an older Zen 4 mobile platform, not an obsolete one. Its eight cores remain fast, its Radeon 780M is useful for integrated gaming, and its media and connectivity features are still practical. Buy the complete system—not the processor label. A well-cooled 7840HS laptop or mini PC with fast dual-channel memory and a fair price remains a sensible choice; pay more for a newer Ryzen AI system when Copilot+ support, a stronger NPU, newer integrated graphics, or longer platform longevity is important.
