AMD Ross is a natural-language AI assistant for embedded-design workflows, built to connect an AI client with AMD tools, documentation, and task-specific skills. AMD says its product FAQ supports all Vivado versions and Vitis HLS 2025.2 and later. The “20-Plus” skills count in the headline is not established by AMD’s product and download pages reviewed here, so treat it as unverified rather than a confirmed current inventory.
What is AMD Ross?
Ross is AMD’s agentic AI assistant for working with embedded design tools. AMD describes using it to interpret error messages, examine designs, help debug hardware, and analyze performance or power. It can search AMD documentation, interact with supported tools, and guide workflows intended to help users reach quality-of-results targets. These are AMD’s descriptions of intended capabilities, not independently measured results.
AMD presents Ross as a set of connected parts rather than a single model: MCP servers connect supported AMD tools to an AI client; a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) knowledge base searches supported public AMD documentation; skills provide expert-authored workflows; and ready-to-run examples show how skills may be applied. Depending on the task, a user might ask a documentation question, inspect a live project or report, or follow a skill to guide analysis and debugging. AMD says Ross can fit into existing IDE or command-line workflows.
Which AMD tools and versions does Ross support?
AMD’s product-page FAQ states that Ross supports “All versions” of Vivado and Vitis HLS version 2025.2 and later. These are AMD’s stated compatibility claims as of October 3, 2026; check the current Ross product page and release documentation before relying on them for a specific installation.
#1 Best Overall
- Board, FPGA, development, EBAZ4205, ZYNQ
Ross does not make the underlying tools or their licenses unnecessary. AMD says users need the applicable Vivado and Vitis tools installed and licensed, as well as a compatible IDE or CLI and access to a preferred large language model (LLM).
What do Ross MCP servers and skills do?
MCP servers connect supported tools
Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers provide the connection between an AI client and supported AMD tools. AMD describes using these connections to work with live tool sessions—for example, opening projects, inspecting utilization, and reading reports. The server executables are available after signing in with AMD credentials.

Skills guide particular workflows
A skill is a set of structured instructions that guides an AI agent through a defined task. AMD’s FAQ describes a SKILL.md file as teaching an agent an FPGA task through steps, interpretation guidance, and fix recommendations. The skills follow the open Agent Skills standard; users can extend existing skills or write their own. AMD identifies .claude/skills/ as the workspace location in its FAQ.

HLS skills do not all require MCP
AMD says HLS skills can work directly with source code and HLS project files using standard command-line tools, including v++ and vitis-run; they do not need the MCP server. This is a different path from workflows that connect an AI client to live Vivado sessions.
How can you set up Ross?
AMD names VS Code, Cursor, Devin, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, and Codex CLI as examples of possible clients. Compatibility depends on the client supporting communication with the relevant MCP servers. AMD describes two setup approaches, including a separate air-gapped option:

Use the VS Code extension
- Install and license the applicable AMD tools, and make sure you have a compatible AI client and access to an LLM.
- Sign in with AMD credentials to obtain the MCP server executables where needed.
- For the simplified VS Code route, install AMD’s
.vsixextension. AMD says it includes access to the Vivado MCP server and the RAG-enabled AMD knowledge base.
Set up an air-gapped knowledge base
For an air-gapped environment, AMD describes deploying the documentation database with an embedding model and MCP server locally, then using an answer-generation model compatible with the available hardware and network policy. This route has local compute and deployment requirements; it is not simply the online extension setup without an internet connection.

How often is Ross updated, and what is currently listed?
AMD says Ross follows a monthly release cadence independent of the usual Vivado and Vitis tool releases. On the AMD downloads page checked October 3, 2026, the listed Vivado AI VS Code extension and Windows and Linux Vivado MCP server executables were version 2026.9.1, last updated September 29, 2026. That page is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee that these remain the latest files.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Ross require an additional license?
AMD says no additional license is required for the Ross workflow. Users still need the applicable licenses for the AMD tools they use; Ross’s licensing statement should not be read as saying Vivado or Vitis is free.
How reliable are Ross’s AI-generated results?
AMD cautions: “AI workflows are non-deterministic — results may vary between runs, models, and prompt phrasing.” Treat generated explanations, recommendations, and proposed actions as assistance, not as verified design results. Review them against your project, tool outputs, and engineering requirements before applying changes.
AMD’s product page also quotes Geetha Govindaraj, Associate Director FPGA SOM BU at iWave Global, saying Ross helped identify and troubleshoot issues more efficiently during debugging and bring-up. This is vendor-hosted customer testimony, not a quantified benchmark or an independent evaluation; AMD’s pages reviewed here do not establish a productivity percentage or other outcome measurement.
Which Ross setup fits your workflow?
| Workflow | What it provides | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| VS Code extension | AMD says the .vsix provides access to the Vivado MCP server and RAG-enabled AMD knowledge base. |
Requires a compatible client, LLM access, and applicable AMD tools and licenses. |
| Other compatible IDE or CLI client | Can support Ross workflows when the client works with the relevant MCP servers. | Client compatibility varies; AMD names examples but does not guarantee every client configuration. |
| Air-gapped knowledge-base deployment | Local documentation database, embedding model, and MCP server, with a compatible answer-generation model. | Requires suitable local hardware and a deployment compatible with network policy. |
| HLS skills through command-line tools | Skills can work on HLS source and project files using tools such as v++ and vitis-run. |
AMD says this path does not require the MCP server. |
AMD does not publish comparative cost or performance data for these setup choices on the pages reviewed. Choose based on whether you need live tool interaction, documentation access in a restricted network, or HLS skill guidance from the command line.
