In December 2008, AMD addressed complaints about the initial ATI AVIVO Video Converter’s output quality, compatibility, stability, and GPU use. AMD said the utility used the GPU for motion estimation only, acknowledged problems affecting some 32-bit and 64-bit setups, and outlined improvements without giving a release date. A June 2009 AnandTech review of an updated version later reported that some input files and conversions still caused problems in its tests.

What prompted AMD’s response?

HotHardware reported on December 21, 2008, that AMD had issued a short FAQ following user and reviewer feedback about the initial GPU-accelerated ATI AVIVO Video Converter. The concerns included output quality, operating-system compatibility, stability, and why reviewers saw limited GPU activity. HotHardware’s report reproduced AMD’s answers; it does not establish how the software behaved on every computer or with every video file.

What did AMD say about compatibility and quality?

AMD acknowledged that some users encountered quality issues when running the 32-bit software on 64-bit systems. It also said some users on 32-bit systems experienced playback anomalies. AMD stated that the converter had not been released with support for 64-bit operating systems, and that its engineering teams had been alerted to the 32-bit issues and were working on them. These statements describe the problems AMD acknowledged at the time, not a guarantee that every system in either category experienced them.

Why was GPU utilization limited?

AMD said the converter offloaded only motion estimation to the GPU, while other parts of the encoding pipeline were not offloaded. AMD described motion estimation as the encoder’s most compute-intensive stage and said the fixed offloaded workload could show up as different levels of GPU activity depending on the graphics-card model. That is AMD’s explanation of the software’s design, not an independent benchmark of its performance.

“The ATI Video Converter uses the GPU for only a portion of the video encoding. Specifically, the GPU currently offloads only the motion estimation portion of the encoding pipeline which is the most compute intensive part of the encoder.”

That wording comes from AMD’s FAQ as reproduced by HotHardware. The FAQ did not identify an individual speaker for its answers.

What improvements did AMD plan?

AMD said it was working on improvements to baseline functionality, ease of use, and stability. It said it was evaluating when those changes could be delivered and would provide more information later. The FAQ gave no firm release date or promised version.

What AVIVO Video Converter was originally intended to do

ATI’s March 9, 2006 launch announcement described AVIVO Video Converter as a wizard included with Catalyst Control Centre 6.3 for Radeon X1000-series graphics cards. It was intended to convert computer video for DVD and DivX players and portable devices such as the iPod, PSP, and Creative Zen.

ATI advertised that the tool could convert 30 minutes of video in less than five minutes and called it more than six times faster than alternatives. Both were ATI’s launch claims, not independently verified measurements in the announcement. The announcement is reproduced by Videomaker.

What did a later review find?

In a June 11, 2009 review, AnandTech examined a later AVIVO converter release. The reviewer reported that the update accepted most of the files that had previously failed to load in their tests, but one test file remained unsupported. The review also described conversion difficulties with some files, particularly in tests involving upscaling to 1080p and H.264 encoding. These are findings from that review’s test cases, not a universal compatibility verdict. Read AnandTech’s review.

What the historical record can—and cannot—tell you

Taken together, the FAQ and later review show AMD acknowledging specific limitations and describing planned improvements, followed by a review that still encountered some file and conversion problems in its own tests. They do not establish present-day availability, security, support, or compatibility, and they do not justify recommending AVIVO for a current computer. The original Radeon X1000 association is relevant only to someone investigating a period-correct setup; it should not be read as evidence of compatibility with modern GPUs or systems.
