AMD released the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition on April 22, 2026. It is a 16-core, 32-thread Zen 5 desktop processor with second-generation 3D V-Cache on both chiplets, up to 5.6 GHz boost, 4.3 GHz base clock, 208 MB total cache and a 200 W default TDP. AMD’s US suggested price is $899.

Intel’s rumored Core Ultra 9 290K Plus was reportedly scrapped, but there is no evidence that AMD’s processor caused the decision. Intel’s reason was not disclosed, and the 290K Plus was not released for an independent head-to-head comparison.

What the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is

The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition is AMD’s flagship desktop Zen 5 processor with stacked cache on both CPU chiplets. AMD describes it as the first desktop processor with dual 3D V-Cache. The design is intended to put a large cache pool close to both chiplets, a feature AMD says can help temperatures, sustained frequencies and efficiency.

Price, availability and what is in the box

AMD’s US suggested launch price was $899. The processor launched through leading retailers and OEM systems, including Alienware’s Area-51 desktop. AMD’s US store displayed the chip at $899 but marked it “Out Of Stock” when checked on September 30, 2026. That status is a point-in-time observation of AMD’s store, not a statement about every retailer.

The boxed processor does not include a thermal solution. AMD recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance, so a complete build needs a compatible cooler in addition to the CPU, motherboard, memory and power supply.

Performance claims: what AMD actually promises

AMD says the 9950X3D2 targets development and creator workloads, including complex compilation, simulations and memory-intensive work. Its launch material reports average gains of 5% to 8% over the previous generation in selected workloads such as DaVinci Resolve, Blender, Unreal Engine builds and Chromium builds.

Those figures are AMD’s vendor-reported results, not independent benchmark results. They apply to the named workload selections and should not be treated as proof of universal gaming, rendering or application leadership. A meaningful comparison requires the same software version, operating system, memory configuration, graphics card, power limits, cooling and test procedure.

AMD Ryzen™ 9 9950X 16-Core, 32-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor
  • The best for creators meets the best for gamers, can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
  • 16 Cores and 32 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
  • 5.7 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 80 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
  • For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
  • Cooler not included, liquid cooler recommended

The processor includes integrated Radeon graphics, but that basic integrated GPU does not replace a discrete graphics card for demanding games or GPU-intensive production work.

Motherboard, memory and cooling requirements

AM5 motherboard support

The chip uses AMD’s AM5 socket. AMD lists support for A620, X670E, X670, B650E, B650, X870E, X870, B840 and B850 chipsets. Socket compatibility alone does not guarantee that an existing board will boot the processor: check the exact motherboard model’s CPU support list and required BIOS version with its manufacturer before buying or upgrading.

DDR5 memory limits

The platform uses DDR5. AMD’s maximum-memory table lists DDR5-5600 for two DIMMs in the stated single- or dual-rank configurations, and DDR5-3600 for four DIMMs in the listed configurations. Actual attainable speed depends on the motherboard, DIMM layout, memory kit and firmware, so follow the board maker’s qualified-memory guidance.

Cooling and power planning

At a 200 W default TDP, the 9950X3D2 needs serious cooling and adequate case airflow. AMD’s recommendation is a liquid cooler for optimal performance; the company does not identify a specific model in the cited material. Treat cooler selection as a system-compatibility decision involving radiator clearance, socket support, case space and fan control rather than as an automatic requirement for one named product.

Did the 9950X3D2 make Intel cancel the 290K Plus?

No causal link has been established. Tom’s Hardware reported on March 26, 2026, that Intel confirmed to PCGamesHardware that it had scrapped the rumored Core Ultra 9 290K Plus and would not release it. The report said Intel did not provide a reason.

That supports a narrow conclusion: the rumored Intel product was reported canceled before release. It does not support claims that AMD’s 9950X3D2 “torpedoed” the chip, that Intel could not compete, or that AMD forced the cancellation. Because the 290K Plus did not ship, there is also no sourced, apples-to-apples benchmark comparing it with the released AMD processor.

How to evaluate the 9950X3D2 for a real build

  1. Confirm the workload. Separate gaming, compilation, simulation, rendering and video work; cache-heavy gains can vary substantially by application.
  2. Check the board’s CPU list and BIOS. Verify support for the exact motherboard revision rather than relying only on the AM5 label.
  3. Plan DDR5 population. Two-DIMM configurations generally offer more speed headroom than four-DIMM layouts under AMD’s published table.
  4. Budget for cooling. The retail box has no thermal solution, and AMD recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance.
  5. Price the whole platform. Include the motherboard, cooler, DDR5, power supply and—if gaming—discrete GPU when comparing with another CPU.
  6. Check live stock and price. The $899 figure is AMD’s US suggested price; retailer pricing and availability can change.

Bottom line on AMD’s launch and Intel’s rumor

The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is a real, released AM5 desktop CPU with 16 cores, 32 threads and dual-chiplet 3D V-Cache. Its $899 launch positioning and large cache target enthusiasts and creators who can use its multithreaded and memory-sensitive capability. AMD’s 5%–8% uplift figure is limited to selected workloads and remains a company claim.

The Intel Core Ultra 9 290K Plus story is different: it concerns an unreleased product reportedly scrapped by Intel for an undisclosed reason. The timing may invite speculation, but the available evidence does not show that AMD’s launch caused Intel’s decision.
