AMD’s GIM and Radeon Pro Adrenalin serve different roles in GPU virtualization: GIM is the host-side driver for KVM, while Radeon Pro Adrenalin 17.12.2 was listed as a technical-preview Windows guest driver for GIM-based virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). That Adrenalin package is a historical listing, not evidence of current support. For present deployments, check AMD’s compatibility matrix for the exact GPU, host, guest, and software versions.
What is GIM for KVM?
AMD describes GIM as the open-source host driver for AMD GPU deployments on KVM. Its MxGPU-Virtualization repository identifies GIM as an open-source SR-IOV driver. In this setup, GIM operates on the virtualization host; it is not the Windows graphics driver installed inside a guest virtual machine.
AMD’s MxGPU-Virtualization repository publishes GIM releases. Its release history includes GIM 8.7.1.K, which describes expanded KVM SR-IOV support for MI325X on RHEL 10 and ROCm profiler support within virtualized guest GPU environments. A release note for that version does not establish compatibility for other GPU, host, or guest combinations.

Which guest driver did AMD list for GIM-based VDI?
AMD’s FirePro S7100X support page lists Radeon Pro Software Adrenalin Edition 17.12.2 for Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit, with a release date of December 19, 2017. AMD labels the Windows 10 package: “Guest Driver: Technical preview driver only for use with Open Source GIM Driver for KVM-based VDI deployments for Microsoft Windows® 10 (64-bit) platforms.”
#1 Best Overall

- Professional Blower Cooling: Efficient single blower design exhausts heat directly out of the chassis, ideal for multi-GPU workstation and server configurations.
- Enterprise-Grade Thermal Solution: Vapor chamber heatsink with industrial Honeywell PTM7950 thermal interface material ensures reliable cooling under sustained professional loads.
The wording identifies a specific guest-driver listing and a technical-preview use case. It does not show that the package is a current, generally supported driver for Windows VMs, nor establish that every AMD GPU supported it. The support page also lists Radeon Pro Software for Enterprise 20.Q2.2 for Windows 10 KVM guests, released December 9, 2020, and describes it as a unified client driver deployable on-premises and in the cloud. These are separate catalog entries; the later listing does not by itself confirm that the 2017 technical preview remains supported.
How do current AMD virtualization paths differ?
AMD’s ROCm 10.0 compatibility matrix treats KVM passthrough and KVM SR-IOV as separate configurations. For supported SR-IOV configurations, it specifies GIM 9.2.0.K. The matrix documents host and guest operating-system combinations, so a match on GPU alone is not enough to establish support.

| Configuration or package | What AMD’s documentation establishes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| KVM passthrough | Documented as a path distinct from KVM SR-IOV in AMD’s ROCm 10.0 compatibility matrix. | GPU, host OS, guest OS, and the matrix entry for the intended software stack. |
| KVM SR-IOV | Supported configurations in the ROCm 10.0 matrix require GIM 9.2.0.K. | That the exact GPU and host/guest combination is listed as supported. |
| Adrenalin 17.12.2 guest driver | Historical technical-preview listing for GIM-based KVM VDI on Windows; AMD gives a December 19, 2017 release date. | Do not assume this preview is supported for a current deployment; consult current compatibility documentation. |
| Radeon Pro Software for Enterprise 20.Q2.2 | AMD lists it for Windows 10 KVM guests, with a December 9, 2020 release date. | Confirm that the package and the complete configuration are appropriate for the deployment. |
How to check compatibility before deployment
- Identify the virtualization method. Determine whether the design uses KVM passthrough or SR-IOV. Do not treat the two as interchangeable.
- Match the exact GPU. Check the model or family against AMD’s compatibility matrix rather than inferring support from a related product.
- Match host and guest operating systems. Confirm both OS versions—and any host requirements shown in the matrix—against the intended configuration.
- Match the software versions. For a supported SR-IOV configuration, check the required GIM version and the relevant ROCm or guest-driver entry. The ROCm 10.0 matrix specifies GIM 9.2.0.K for supported SR-IOV configurations.
- Use the guest-driver listing for its stated scope. Treat Adrenalin 17.12.2 as the historical technical preview described on AMD’s FirePro S7100X page, not as a blanket recommendation for current Windows guests.
What the old announcement title does—and does not—establish
The title “AMD Open Sourcing GIM KVM Driver and the Radeon Pro Adrenalin Update” points to an announcement, but the verifiable support catalog and current documentation establish the software roles and compatibility context rather than the announcement’s date or its precise update scope. The available AMD listings support saying that GIM is open source and that a Radeon Pro Adrenalin guest package was offered as a technical preview; they do not support assigning a date or additional claims to the announcement itself.
