AMD Fusion did not create ETX or XTX. In 2011, congatec added AMD Fusion processors to two existing computer-on-module formats: the ETX conga-EAF and XTX conga-XAF. XTX offered newer I/O than ETX, but “future-proofs” was promotional language—not a guarantee of indefinite product availability or universal compatibility.

What ETX and XTX are

ETX and XTX are computer-on-module formats. A module carries core PC functions and plugs into a carrier board designed for the application. The carrier supplies the project-specific connections and circuitry, letting a designer change the module without redesigning the entire system—provided the module and carrier’s electrical implementation match.

congatec’s design guide describes ETX as a 95 × 114 mm form factor with four system connectors and standardized pinouts. XTX uses the same general form factor and extends the interface. That common outline does not, by itself, establish that every module will work with every carrier.

How XTX differs from ETX

The defining difference is at connector X2. XTX replaces ETX’s module-level ISA signals with newer interfaces, including PCI Express and Serial ATA. congatec’s 2005 description also identifies additional USB 2.0 capability and continued 32-bit PCI. The vendor’s announcement lists four PCI Express lanes and four Serial ATA interfaces; these are descriptions of the XTX implementation, not a promise that every XTX product exposes identical capabilities. congatec’s XTX Design Guide documents the connector and signal details.

Comparison ETX XTX
Legacy ISA Included in the ETX design described by congatec. Replaced at the module interface. Legacy needs may require an ISA bridge on the carrier or use of LPC, depending on the design.
Newer I/O Original ETX interface set. Adds PCI Express and Serial ATA; congatec’s descriptions also identify additional USB 2.0 capability.
Connector relationship Four standardized module connectors in the design guide. X1, X3, and X4 retain ETX Rev. 2.7 signals; X2 differs.

congatec introduced XTX in 2005 as an ETX extension and said existing ETX designs could be upgraded when ISA was not required. Treat that backward-compatibility statement as the manufacturer’s claim, not a blanket guarantee: confirm the carrier wiring, connector revision, and any dependency on ISA before selecting a replacement module. The XTX Design Guide is the relevant technical reference.

What the 2011 AMD announcement actually covered

The 2011 story concerned integrating AMD Fusion processors into established module formats. congatec’s ETX conga-EAF and XTX conga-XAF were the named examples. At the time, congatec said Intel’s discontinuation of the 855 chipset family had created a gap, especially for higher-performance ETX modules, and positioned AMD Fusion as an answer. That was the period’s market framing, not evidence about today’s availability or supply. Electronic Design’s March 10, 2011 coverage also mentioned a conga-CA6 module at a starting price of $300 in OEM quantities; that historical price was for the CA6, not a current price or the stated price of the EAF or XAF.

A historical congatec XTX/ETX product overview lists AMD Embedded G-Series ETX/XTX examples supporting up to 4 GB of DDR3 at 1066 MHz. That specification belongs to the listed products and should not be generalized to every module in either format.

Can an XTX module replace an ETX module?

Sometimes, but the format name alone is not enough to establish compatibility. congatec says X1, X3, and X4 retain the ETX Rev. 2.7 signals, while X2 carries the interface changes. Whether an XTX module works in a particular ETX carrier therefore depends on how that carrier uses the connectors and whether the system needs ISA.

  • Check the exact module and carrier-board documentation, including connector pinout and revision.
  • Inspect which X2 signals the carrier actually uses; do not assume an unused-looking connector makes the designs interchangeable.
  • Identify any ISA-dependent devices or software-facing hardware. XTX does not retain ISA natively; a bridge or an appropriate LPC-based design may be needed.
  • Confirm that the carrier supports the replacement module’s power, cooling, and other implementation requirements using the manufacturers’ documentation.

Did “future-proofs” mean long-term support?

No indefinite support commitment follows from the 2011 headline. The word “future-proofs” referred to adding newer interfaces and AMD Fusion processing to legacy module formats. It should not be read as proof that those particular products would remain available indefinitely.

A separate 2016 announcement covered three AMD Geode LX 800 modules—conga-ELX, conga-ELXeco, and conga-XLX—not the Fusion-based conga-EAF and conga-XAF. congatec said the Geode modules, launched in 2005 and 2007, would have availability extended from the company’s usual seven years to 12–14 years, with support through at least the end of 2019. That stated endpoint has passed. The company also reported shipping more than 20,000 of those Geode LX 800 modules annually; this was a company-reported figure, not an independently verified market total. congatec’s January 21, 2016 lifecycle announcement gives the specific models and commitment.

What this means when choosing a module today

ETX and XTX remain useful concepts when maintaining an existing embedded design, but the cited historical announcements do not establish current stock for the AMD Fusion modules. Advantech maintains an ETX/XTX product-category page; a category listing alone does not confirm that a particular Fusion module is currently available.

For a replacement or a new design, verify the exact processor, module condition, seller, connector revision, carrier-board wiring, and ISA requirements. For a new platform decision, ETX/XTX should also be understood in the wider history of embedded module specifications: a 2020 PICMG industry article lists ETX, XTX, COM Express, and COM-HPC in that progression, describing COM-HPC as a newer generation aimed at higher-end computing. That article provides broad context, not detailed specifications for selecting among standards. PICMG’s August 10, 2020 article is the source for that characterization.
