ServeTheHome’s July 2023 article covered three AMD EPYC Genoa-X processors: the 96-core 9684X with 1,152MB of L3 cache, the 32-core 9384X with 768MB, and the 16-core 9184X with 768MB. The “48MB per core” figure belongs to the 9184X: 768MB divided by 16 cores. It is a total-cache-to-core ratio, not evidence that each core has a separate, dedicated 48MB cache.
Which three EPYC Genoa-X models did the article cover?
ServeTheHome reported the following specifications and launch list prices on July 10, 2023. Those prices are historical list prices, not verified current street prices or an indication of present availability.
| Model | Cores | Reported total L3 cache | L3 cache per core by division | Reported July 2023 list price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EPYC 9684X | 96 | 1,152MB | 12MB | $14,756 |
| EPYC 9384X | 32 | 768MB | 24MB | $5,529 |
| EPYC 9184X | 16 | 768MB | 48MB | $4,928 |
All specifications and prices in the table are as reported by ServeTheHome’s July 10, 2023 article. The cache-per-core column is arithmetic based on total reported L3 divided by core count; it does not describe a separately assigned cache amount for each core. The 9684X’s 1,152MB is the source of the roughly 1.1GB headline figure.
What does “48MB of L3 cache per core” mean?
It is the ratio for the 16-core 9184X: 768MB of reported total L3 cache ÷ 16 cores = 48MB per core by division. It does not mean the 9684X has 48MB per core; its ratio by the same calculation is 12MB. Nor does the ratio establish that cache is physically partitioned into a dedicated 48MB allocation for every core.

What distinguishes Genoa-X?
The 2023 ServeTheHome article describes Genoa-X as retaining AMD’s Zen 4 architecture and adding 3D V-Cache. Across the three listed models, core counts and total L3 cache vary: the 9684X has the highest core count and total cache, while the 9184X and 9384X each have 768MB of L3 with different core counts.
What kinds of work may benefit from more L3 cache?
AMD’s explanation of the 3D V-Cache approach for the earlier Milan-X generation identified data-heavy technical-computing tasks, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), electronic design automation (EDA), and structural analysis. More cache may help when an application’s data access patterns and working set make effective use of it; cache capacity alone does not establish that a particular server or application will run faster.

AMD’s March 21, 2022 Milan-X announcement reported results from selected tests: up to 66% faster Synopsys VCS simulation for the 16-core EPYC 7373X versus the 73F3; an average 44% more performance in selected Altair Radioss simulations for the 64-core 7773X versus Intel’s 40-core Xeon Platinum 8380; and an average 88% more CFD problems per day in selected Ansys CFX tests for the 32-core 7573X versus a comparable-core competitor. These are AMD-reported Milan-X comparisons, not Genoa-X benchmark results or independent measurements. AMD’s release notes that results vary with silicon, hardware, software, and driver configurations, and dates several internal tests to February 14, 2022. Core count and cache are only part of a server buying decision. Compare the workload’s scaling behavior and software licensing model alongside compatible server configuration, power and platform requirements, and a currently verified price. A lower-core-count, high-cache processor such as the 9184X could be worth evaluating where licensing is tied to core count, but that is a buyer-specific consideration—not an AMD performance claim or proof it is the best-value choice.

The cited prices reflect a 2023 publication and do not establish 2026 pricing, stock, regional availability, or validated server configurations. Check with a system vendor or integrator for current offers and confirm the exact processor is supported by the intended server before purchasing. No direct Genoa-X benchmark result is established by the sources cited here, so performance comparisons should be based on testing relevant to the target application and configuration.
