AMD’s Venice family is its 6th Generation EPYC server CPU line, and its flagship EPYC 9996 is specified with 256 cores and 512 threads. AMD announced a production ramp in May 2026 and described Venice as in production by October, but those milestones do not establish a general retail release date or street price.
What is AMD Venice, and what is the EPYC 9996?
Venice is the codename for AMD’s 6th Generation EPYC processor family. The EPYC 9996 is a named model in that family; AMD lists it with 256 cores and 512 threads. It is a data-center/server processor, not a consumer desktop CPU intended as a drop-in upgrade.

AMD announced on May 21, 2026, that Venice production was ramping in Taiwan using TSMC’s 2nm process. AMD also described plans to ramp production at TSMC’s Arizona facility. In October, AMD said Venice was in production. These statements document manufacturing progress, not universal availability of every processor or system.
When is AMD Venice coming out?
There is no single confirmed retail date established for the EPYC 9996. The reported milestones refer to different stages:

What workloads are Venice EPYC CPUs for?
AMD positions EPYC for cloud, enterprise, high-performance computing (HPC), and AI infrastructure. In AI systems, the CPU handles work around accelerators, including data movement, networking, storage, security, orchestration, retrieval, databases, and tool execution. The 9996’s large core and thread count is aimed at server workloads that can use substantial parallel compute; it does not alone determine performance for any particular application.

- MULTI-CORE: 64-CORE
Microsoft gave concrete examples in its July 2026 announcement: Azure HDv2 virtual machines for agentic AI and data pipelines, and HXv2 virtual machines for semiconductor design, are planned to use Venice. That is a cloud deployment plan, not evidence that the same processor is suitable or available in every server configuration.
Which platform features matter beyond the core count?
AMD’s 6th Gen EPYC family materials list up to 16 memory channels of 12.8 GT/s MRDIMM support, PCIe Gen 6, and boost frequencies up to 5 GHz on select SKUs. These are family-level capability claims; they should not be read as a guarantee that every feature applies to the EPYC 9996 or to a given system. Confirm the exact processor SKU, supported memory, motherboard, BIOS, cooling, and power delivery with the server vendor.
Power is a particularly important server-platform consideration. AMD specifies 600W default CPU power for one EPYC 9996 test configuration. That is a figure for the stated test setup, not a blanket power rating for every system or workload. A procurement decision needs the complete server’s power and cooling requirements, not just the CPU specification.
How should you read AMD’s EPYC 9996 performance claims?
AMD’s October 2026 materials report selected comparisons between the 9996 and Intel Xeon 6980P, including AMD-reported advantages from 1.8x to 3.13x in particular molecular dynamics, materials modeling, and weather forecasting tests. Those results are AMD’s workload- and configuration-specific testing, not an independent, universal ranking. AMD’s materials include estimates or projections in some cases, identify test configurations, and caution that results vary. See the AMD product and performance materials for the stated methodology and configurations.
Rank #4
- The processor features Socket AM5 socket for installation on the PCB
- EPYC product line processor for better usability and increased efficiency
- Dodeca-core (12 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
- 64 MB of L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
- Processor with 3.40 GHz clock speed for reliable and fast execution of instructions to ensure maximum convenience and feasibility
No independently tested result or published third-party comparison is established here that would support saying the EPYC 9996 is universally faster. The useful comparison is the workload you intend to run on complete, similarly configured systems. AMD’s separate data-center comparisons also depend on their stated server and scenario assumptions; environmental or cost implications will change with utilization, electricity mix, and workload inputs. AMD’s data-center comparison describes those assumptions.

Core count is only one part of a server decision. Compare systems against the actual workload and deployment constraints:
Best Value
- Throughput and per-core performance: Use relevant workload benchmarks; a highly threaded job and a latency-sensitive application can favor different systems.
- Memory: Check capacity, bandwidth, supported memory type, and whether the exact server supports the stated MRDIMM capabilities.
- I/O and accelerators: Confirm PCIe generation, slot layout, networking, storage, and accelerator configuration in the complete platform.
- Power and cooling: Verify system-level requirements, including power delivery and cooling for the chosen CPU configuration.
- Compatibility and operations: Check BIOS support, virtualization and software ecosystem needs, OEM validation, and service arrangements.
- Total system cost: Compare the full server and operating costs rather than inferring value from core count or a single benchmark.
AMD’s product page identifies the EPYC 9996 as a server processor, but the cited material does not provide a confirmed street price. Obtain a current quote from a server vendor or integrator, and verify that the offered system’s specifications match the requirements of your software and workload.
