Some AMD Ryzen CPU bundles have lost the Wraith Spire or Wraith Prism cooler, while others have reportedly switched to the smaller Wraith Stealth. Reports published August 28, 2025, date the change to August 1 and describe it as applying to selected product identifiers—not every Ryzen processor. If you are buying, check the exact SKU’s current listing and box contents before assuming a cooler is included.
What changed with AMD’s Wraith coolers?
HotHardware, Tom’s Hardware, and TechSpot reported that AMD marked the Wraith Spire and Wraith Prism coolers end-of-life beginning August 1, 2025. Their coverage describes selected Ryzen bundles losing a cooler or receiving a Wraith Stealth in its place. TechSpot reported that AMD did not issue a dedicated press release about the change. HotHardware’s report, Tom’s Hardware’s report, and TechSpot’s report give the product-level context. This is not evidence that all Ryzen CPUs have stopped shipping with a cooler.
Which Ryzen CPUs are confirmed to ship without a cooler?
AMD’s support bulletin specifically says the Ryzen 5 7600X, Ryzen 7 7700X, Ryzen 9 7900X, and Ryzen 9 7950X boxes do not include a cooler or heatsink. AMD says buyers of those models must purchase a cooling solution separately. Its bulletin states: “AMD Ryzen 7000 series processor boxes do NOT include a cooler or heatsink, and a cooling solution must be purchased independently.” AMD’s Ryzen 7000 box-contents bulletin applies to the four named X models here; it is not a complete list of all bundles affected by the reported Wraith retirement.

These are AMD’s stated cooling-capacity requirements for the listed processors, not a universal rule for every Ryzen CPU. Consult the bulletin for the exact model you intend to buy.

Does the Ryzen 7 7700 come with a cooler?
AMD’s Ryzen 7 7700 product page currently describes a Wraith Prism as included. That is distinct from the Ryzen 7 7700X, which AMD’s support bulletin says ships without a cooler. The names differ by one letter, but the box contents do too. Check the seller’s live listing and the precise processor SKU before checkout, since reported bundle revisions and retailer inventory can vary. AMD’s Ryzen 7 7700 product page is in Portuguese.
How to choose a separate cooler
If your CPU box does not include one, select a cooling solution using the exact processor and system—not just the Ryzen family name. AMD’s bulletin links to its thermal-solutions guidance; for an aftermarket cooler, verify the manufacturer’s current specifications.

- CPU and socket compatibility: Confirm the cooler supports the exact CPU socket and mounting hardware.
- Cooling capacity: Meet or exceed AMD’s stated minimum for a model when AMD publishes one. For the four CPUs in its bulletin, use the model-specific figures above.
- Case clearance: Check the cooler’s height or radiator dimensions against your case, motherboard, and memory clearance.
- Noise and price: Compare these according to your priorities; a cooler that meets the compatibility and capacity requirements may still differ substantially in acoustics, size, and cost.
Do not assume that any cooler described as “AM5 compatible” is automatically adequate for every Ryzen processor. Compatibility and heat-dissipation capability are separate checks, and this guidance does not establish a complete compatibility list for aftermarket products.

What to check before buying
- Match the full CPU name and SKU on the retailer listing to AMD’s product page and support guidance.
- Look for an explicit statement in the listing about whether a cooler is included; do not infer box contents from another CPU in the same series.
- If no cooler is included, confirm socket fit, cooling capacity, and case clearance for the cooler you plan to buy.
- Recheck the box contents before purchase if the retailer listing is vague or the product may come from older or revised inventory.
