Yes. In a May 2023 interview, AMD CTO Mark Papermaster confirmed that future AMD client processors will use more heterogeneous designs, combining different kinds of computing resources. He described high-performance cores, power-efficient cores and accelerators, but did not name a Ryzen model or give a launch date.
What did AMD’s CTO confirm?
Speaking with Tom’s Hardware at imec’s ITF World 2023 conference in Antwerp, AMD chief technology officer Mark Papermaster was asked whether hybrid architecture was coming to client PCs. He replied, “Absolutely. It’s already there today, and you’ll see more coming.” He added: “But what you’ll also see is more variations of the cores themselves, you’ll see high-performance cores mixed with power-efficient cores mixed with acceleration.” Read the interview at Tom’s Hardware.
The comments set a direction for future designs rather than announce a product. Papermaster discussed moving beyond core-count variations toward tailored configurations, different core types, stacked cache and accelerators around the CPU. AMD’s stated rationale was that a single configuration cannot suit every application, while power efficiency is an important design constraint.

What does “hybrid” mean for an AMD processor?
A hybrid, or heterogeneous, processor combines different kinds of computing resources. In Papermaster’s description, that could include performance-oriented CPU cores, power-efficient CPU cores and dedicated accelerators. An accelerator is specialized hardware for particular workloads; it is not simply another CPU core.

AMD already had a limited example in the Ryzen 7040 “Phoenix” series: its conventional CPU cores were paired with an on-die Ryzen AI accelerator. The CPU cores themselves were uniform, however, so Phoenix was not a performance-core/efficiency-core split like Intel’s. TechSpot’s report on the interview makes that distinction.
When will Ryzen get performance and efficiency cores?
The interview did not establish a release date, product name or configuration for a future consumer Ryzen processor with distinct performance and efficiency CPU cores. Papermaster’s statement confirms that AMD intends to use more varied designs; it does not say when a particular design will reach PCs. The Ryzen 7040 example shows CPU cores paired with an accelerator, not two different CPU core types.

How might AMD’s approach differ from Intel’s?
AMD executive David McAfee later described a preference for keeping the application model more homogeneous. He raised concerns about complexity if different CPU core types have different instruction-set support or capabilities. In Tom’s Hardware’s account, AMD’s Zen 4C server cores retained the same instructions as their denser counterparts, including AVX-512, while reducing the cache hierarchy to increase density. Tom’s Hardware explains AMD’s reasoning.

That points to a design question, not a settled consumer-product specification. How core types share instructions and software behavior, how the operating system schedules work, and how cache and core density are balanced can all shape the trade-offs. Dedicated accelerators also differ from CPU efficiency cores: they can handle selected tasks without changing the CPU core mix.

The cited interviews provide architectural reasoning, not independent benchmark results. They do not establish that a future AMD design will outperform Intel’s, improve battery life, or benefit every workload. Those outcomes would depend on the specific processor, system and software.

The interview also covered AMD’s use of AI in chip development. Papermaster said AMD already applies AI to place-and-route optimization, verification and test-pattern generation. He described generative AI as a way to build on existing designs, saying, “It (AI) won’t replace designers, but I think it has a tremendous capability to speed design.” TechSpot’s coverage includes his comments.

That provides current context for AMD’s design work, but does not identify a hybrid Ryzen SKU or establish that one has launched.
