AMD has confirmed that the Radeon RX 9070 set a first-week sales record for Radeon launches, but it has not disclosed how many RX 9000 cards it sold. The early “unprecedented” demand coverage also needs an important correction: ExtremeTech later reported that AMD said it had not claimed sales exceeded 200,000 cards, and the article’s original source retracted that figure.
Did AMD sell more than 200,000 RX 9000 GPUs?
That number is not confirmed. In an update to its early coverage, ExtremeTech reported that AMD contacted the outlet to clarify it had not claimed to have shipped more than 200,000 cards; the original source had retracted the number. The figure should therefore not be presented as AMD-reported sales or as an established total.

The “unprecedented” description came from launch-period reporting about brisk initial sell-through. It conveys reported demand, not a disclosed unit count.

What sales information has AMD confirmed?
The RX 9070’s first-week record
AMD’s 2024 annual report says: “In its first week alone, the RX 9070 outsold any previous Radeon GPU launch by a significant margin, setting a new sales record for the brand.” That is a clear company statement about a launch record, but AMD gave no number of cards sold. Read the claim as a qualitative comparison with previous Radeon launches, not a measure of the RX 9070’s total sales.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs

AMD’s later demand update
On AMD’s Q2 2025 results call, CEO Lisa Su said demand for the Radeon 9000 series was “very strong” and that desktop GPU sell-through accelerated during the quarter as demand outpaced supply. The comment corroborates strong demand at that time; it is not a sales tally and does not establish current stock levels.
The Q2 2025 results-call materials record Su’s statement.
Which cards were part of the launch?
AMD announced the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 on February 28, 2025, as the first RX 9000 cards built on its RDNA 4 architecture. Both launch models have 16GB of memory. AMD also highlighted third-generation ray-tracing accelerators, second-generation AI accelerators and FidelityFX Super Resolution 4.
At launch, AMD listed these suggested US prices and said partner cards were expected to begin arriving on March 6, 2025:
Rank #2
- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
| Launch model | Memory | Suggested US price at launch | Partner availability announced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radeon RX 9070 XT | 16GB | $599 | Expected from March 6, 2025 |
| Radeon RX 9070 | 16GB | $549 | Expected from March 6, 2025 |
These are launch-era manufacturer figures, not current prices or a guarantee of what retailers charged or had in stock. AMD named ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte, PowerColor, Sapphire, Vastarmor, XFX and Yeston as board partners expected to offer cards.

Why could RX 9070 cards be hard to find at launch?
AMD’s later account offers one explanation for tight supply in the quarter: desktop GPU sell-through accelerated as demand outpaced supply. That supports a demand-versus-supply explanation for the period Su was discussing, but it does not establish how many cards were available at launch, how long any shortage lasted, or whether a particular retailer or model was difficult to find.
How should AMD’s performance claims be read?
Sales claims and performance claims answer different questions. AMD’s launch announcement compared the RX 9070 series with the RX 7900 GRE using AMD performance-lab testing conducted in February 2025. The tests used a Ryzen 7 9800X3D system with 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory, Windows 11 Pro, specified drivers and game settings. Those results are AMD’s own tests under those conditions, not a promise of the same gains in every game or system and not independent review results.
For a purchase decision, compare independent results for the specific board-partner card and the games and resolution you use. Also check that card’s price, power requirements, case fit, cooling and noise. The launch information and sales statements do not establish current pricing, availability or which model is the better value today.
