AMD announced two commercial processor families on April 16, 2024: Ryzen PRO 8000 for desktop PCs and Ryzen PRO 8040 for business laptops and mobile workstations. The desktop range includes Ryzen AI only on the Ryzen 7 PRO 8700G/GE and Ryzen 5 PRO 8600G/GE—not on the 8500G/GE or 8300G/GE. AMD named Lenovo and HP as OEM partners, but its Q2 2024 availability forecast is historical, not confirmation of current stock.
What AMD announced
The announcement paired a commercial desktop lineup, Ryzen PRO 8000, with a mobile lineup, Ryzen PRO 8040. AMD positioned both for business systems and named Lenovo and HP among the OEM partners. The release said systems were expected from Q2 2024; that was a forecast at the time, not evidence of what is available now. Check a current OEM listing for the exact processor and system configuration.
Which Ryzen PRO 8000 desktop models have Ryzen AI?
Ryzen AI is SKU-specific in this desktop family. AMD marked it available on the 8700G, 8700GE, 8600G and 8600GE. It is not listed for the 8500G, 8500GE, 8300G or 8300GE. AMD’s current compatibility guidance likewise excludes those 8500G/GE and 8300G/GE models from Ryzen AI compatibility among its 8000G desktop processors (AMD Ryzen AI guidance).

AMD also said the desktop systems support DDR5 memory and PCIe 4, with Wi-Fi 7 available on select systems. Wi-Fi 7 is a system-level option, not a guarantee for every PC using one of these processors.

What AMD’s performance figures do—and do not—show
AMD reported up to 47% higher performance and 3x better graphics performance in select tests comparing business desktops with Ryzen 7 PRO 8700G against systems with Intel Core i7-14700. These are AMD-reported results from its own testing, not independent benchmarks, and “up to” results from selected tests should not be treated as a prediction for every workload.
AMD also claimed up to 19% better performance for the Ryzen 7 PRO 8700G in competitive testing. That is likewise a vendor claim governed by the announcement’s test configuration and footnotes, not a general guarantee of application-level performance. The announcement forecast more than 150 AI-powered ISVs by the end of 2024; that forecast alone does not establish whether the count was reached.

Ryzen PRO 8040: the business mobile lineup
AMD’s announcement listed the Ryzen 9 PRO 8945HS; Ryzen 7 PRO 8845HS, 8840HS and 8840U; Ryzen 5 PRO 8645HS, 8640HS and 8640U; and Ryzen 5 PRO 8540U. The listed mobile processors have six or eight cores. AMD marked Ryzen AI on selected parts and showed the 8540U without it, so buyers should verify AI support on the precise laptop SKU rather than infer it from the series name.
For one specific example, AMD’s product page lists the Ryzen 7 PRO 8840HS as an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 4 processor with boost up to 5.1 GHz, 28 W default TDP, configurable 20–30 W TDP, and FP7/FP7r2 sockets (AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 8840HS specifications). A laptop’s implementation and capabilities still depend on the OEM system configuration.

How to evaluate a Ryzen PRO business PC
The processor name is only one part of a commercial PC specification. When comparing systems, check:

- Exact CPU SKU: Confirm the full model, including G or GE for desktop processors, and whether Ryzen AI is listed for that exact model.
- Power class and intended system: The desktop G and GE parts have different stated power figures; compare the processor and the OEM’s complete system design rather than assuming the suffix alone describes every system difference.
- Graphics and memory: AMD’s headline graphics claims concern a specific comparison. Check the OEM configuration’s memory and graphics details for the workload you care about.
- Connectivity and platform: DDR5 and PCIe 4 are part of AMD’s desktop platform claims; Wi-Fi 7 is only available on select systems. Verify the actual PC’s ports and wireless hardware.
- Business-system details: Price, management and security features, support period and availability depend on the specific OEM model and configuration. Confirm them on the current listing.
Availability and buying context
AMD’s 2024 release identified Lenovo ThinkCentre and HP commercial systems as partner routes for these processors. Because its stated Q2 2024 timing is not a current stock update, use current Lenovo or HP listings to confirm that a system is still sold and that it contains the intended Ryzen PRO SKU. AMD’s announcement does not establish current prices, inventory or the availability of every processor as a standalone retail part.
