AMD describes the processor as using second-generation 3D V-Cache. The company says it places cache beneath the compute die, a design it says improves thermal headroom and enables higher clock speeds. These are AMD’s description and rationale for the design. See the official Ryzen 7 9800X3D product specifications for product details.
What motherboard and memory does it need?
The 9800X3D uses the AM5 socket and DDR5 memory. AMD lists these supported chipset families: A620, B650, B650E, X670, X670E, B840, B850, X870, and X870E. Chipset-family support does not guarantee that every board is ready without a BIOS update, so check the motherboard maker’s CPU-support list and documentation before buying or upgrading.

- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
AMD’s product page lists memory speeds of DDR5-5600 for the two-DIMM configurations shown and DDR5-3600 for the four-DIMM configurations shown. Those are configuration-dependent specifications, not a promise that every kit or board will run at that speed. Confirm memory compatibility and configuration guidance with the motherboard documentation.
Does the Ryzen 7 9800X3D include a cooler?
No. AMD lists the boxed processor’s thermal solution as “Not Included” and recommends a liquid cooler for optimal performance. Choose a cooling solution suitable for the processor and your case; the cooler, motherboard, and DDR5 memory are separate build components.

What did AMD claim about gaming performance?
AMD said its Performance Labs testing in October 2024 found the 9800X3D averaged 20% faster gaming performance than Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285K across the game set it tested. AMD’s comparison used an X870E motherboard, 2×16 GB DDR5-6000, and a GeForce RTX 4090, among other specified system and game settings; the selected titles included Black Myth: Wukong, Starfield, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. AMD also reported comparisons with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Core i9-14900K. For one example, it reported a 31% higher 1% low in The Last of Us: Part 1 versus the 14900K while describing average frame rates as similar.
These are AMD’s own test results, not independent benchmarks. They apply to the tested games and configurations, not every game, resolution, graphics card, or system; AMD notes that results can vary with system configuration. The detailed comparisons and test notes are in AMD’s October 2024 announcement.
