The AMD/ASRock BC-250 is a mining compute board that community documentation describes as using a cut-down APU related to the PlayStation 5’s silicon. That supports a relationship between the platforms, but does not establish that its chips were removed from used PS5 consoles. Nor do the available sources verify that a mining rig built with BC-250 boards cost $15,000. The evidence is narrower: the board’s documented hardware, its mining-oriented design and dated examples of secondhand prices.
What the BC-250 is—and what “PS5-based” means
Community documentation describes the BC-250 as an AMD/ASRock mining compute board built around a cut-down APU related to the PS5’s silicon. “Related to” is the important distinction: a shared or derived design does not prove that a particular chip was salvaged from a manufactured console. The available sources do not establish the chips’ manufacturing or reuse history, or independently substantiate a $15,000 rig total.
The documented BC-250 is a complete custom-form-factor board, not a retail graphics card that plugs into a standard PC motherboard. H6-Technologies community documentation lists DisplayPort, Gigabit Ethernet, USB, M.2 storage and a PCIe 8-pin power connector. Those connections make desktop use possible in principle, but do not make the board a drop-in PC upgrade.
BC-250 specifications compared with the PS5 APU
The following figures are from community-maintained documentation, not an official AMD product sheet. The PS5 figure is the comparison stated by that documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- Socket LGA1151 support 7th & 6th Intel Core i7/i5/i3/Pentium/Celeron Chipset: Intel B250
- 4 x DDR4 up to 64 GB, Dual Channel
| Item | BC-250 | PS5 APU comparison |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Six Zen 2 cores (H6-Technologies community documentation, accessed 2026) | Not stated in the cited comparison |
| GPU compute units | 24 RDNA2 compute units (H6-Technologies community documentation, accessed 2026) | 36 compute units (H6-Technologies community documentation, accessed 2026) |
| Memory | 16GB shared GDDR6, with allocation affected by software configuration (AMD BC250 Documentation community-maintained specifications) | Not stated in the cited comparison |
| Listed power figure | 220W TDP (H6-Technologies community documentation, accessed 2026) | Not stated in the cited comparison |
The compute-unit difference is one reason not to treat a BC-250 as equivalent to a retail PS5. The board is a distinct, cut-down configuration, and its shared memory and custom hardware setup also differ from the experience of buying a console or a conventional PC graphics card.
What the $15,000 figure does—and does not—establish
The available reporting does not independently verify the title’s $15,000 total, identify a confirmed rig configuration or establish how many boards it contained. It would be misleading to infer a board count or reconstruct a total from unrelated listings.
Rank #2
- Supports 6th generation Intel Core processors (socket 1151)
- Supports Dual Channel DDR4 2133
- 1 PCIe 3.0 x16, 2 PCIe 3.0 x1
- 6 USB 3.0 (2 front, 4 rear)
- NOTE: Refer the User Manual before use.
Tom’s Hardware reported on November 9, 2025, that BC-250 units had been listed on eBay for about $500 in 2021 and that similar units were then offered in China for about £96, or $120. These are examples tied to particular marketplaces and dates, not a verified valuation of a specific rig or a current price quote. Asking prices also do not establish what buyers ultimately paid.

Community guides describe running the board as a desktop, so repurposing is a real use case rather than a claim that it is an ordinary PC component. Expect a specialist project: the board has a custom form factor, community-supported software and configuration needs, and less predictable compatibility than mainstream desktop hardware. Driver, kernel and firmware behavior can change; check current community documentation for the specific operating system and workload before buying.
Rank #3
- Comprehensive AMD AM4 Platform: Supports a wide range of AMD Socket AM4 processors, including Ryzen 5000, 4000, and 3000 Series CPUs and APUs for flexible, budget-friendly builds. Please check ASRock's CPU support list for detailed compatibility.
- Legacy Display Support: Offers maximum monitor compatibility with three video outputs: HDMI (4K 60Hz), DVI-D, and D-Sub (VGA), perfect for office or home systems.
- High-Speed Memory Support: Two DDR4 DIMM slots support dual-channel configurations and overclocked speeds up to 4733+ (OC) for responsive performance.
- PCIe 4.0 Ready: The primary PCIe x16 slot supports PCIe 4.0 speeds (with compatible 3rd Gen Ryzen CPUs and above) for modern graphics cards.
- Versatile Storage Options: Features one Hyper M.2 slot (PCIe Gen4x4 and SATA3) for a fast NVMe or SATA SSD, plus four SATA3 ports for additional drives.
Before planning a build, check these practical constraints:
- Power: The community hardware documentation lists a PCIe 8-pin power connector and a 220W TDP. That TDP is not, by itself, a complete PSU-sizing recommendation; verify the individual board’s requirements and allow for the rest of the system.
- Cooling: Cooling matters, including for the GDDR6 memory. Confirm what cooling hardware is present, what the seller includes and whether the proposed setup can keep the board and memory adequately cooled.
- Storage and connections: The listed M.2 storage, DisplayPort, USB and Gigabit Ethernet are useful starting points, but confirm the specific unit’s condition and configuration rather than assuming every listing is complete or tested.
- Software support: Treat community instructions as version-dependent. Confirm that the available drivers and setup steps support your intended operating system and workload, and be prepared to troubleshoot.
For gaming, the existence of a community guide or a report of a game running on a BC-250 does not establish console-like compatibility, performance or ease of setup across other titles. Check evidence for the exact software configuration and game you care about.

What to verify before buying a used board
- Ask for the exact model and clear photos of the board, connectors and any included cooling or power accessories.
- Confirm that the seller has tested the board, and ask what test was performed. A listing price alone does not establish that a unit works.
- Check the PCIe 8-pin power requirement, the intended cooling arrangement and whether GDDR6 memory cooling is covered.
- Confirm storage needs, display connections and the community software instructions for your intended use.
- Compare the asking price with recent listings in the same marketplace and region. Treat historical prices as context, not a current valuation.
