Ambient IoT can make asset tracking battery-free by harvesting small amounts of energy from sources such as radio waves or light. A tag uses that energy to send brief updates, while nearby Bluetooth receivers and software turn the updates into location and condition records. It can support frequent visibility for large numbers of assets, but a tag alone is not a tracking system: coverage, update frequency and useful data all depend on the surrounding infrastructure and the tag’s capabilities.

What Ambient IoT means

Ambient IoT is a class of connected devices primarily powered by energy they harvest from their surroundings, including radio waves, light, motion or heat. Bluetooth SIG and ABI Research used this definition in their 2024 explainer, What Is the Ambient IoT? Because the available energy is limited, devices are designed to use little power and perform a narrower set of tasks than many conventional connected devices.

The potential benefits are small, low-maintenance tags and, in some designs, operation without a battery. The trade-off is that performance and capability depend on available energy, the tag’s design and whether there are nearby receivers to hear it. “Battery-free” describes a particular product design, not Bluetooth tags as a whole.

How ambient tags track assets

  1. Attach a tag. A small tag or label goes on an item such as a case, pallet, reusable transport item, product, tool or piece of equipment.
  2. Harvest energy and send updates. The tag draws energy from an ambient source and transmits when it has enough power. Depending on the product, its data may include identity, movement, location-related observations, temperature, humidity or light.
  3. Receive the signal. Bluetooth gateways, compatible access points, configured smartphones or other listening nodes detect transmissions. Wiliot says its IoT Pixels can be relayed by Bluetooth 4.0-or-newer devices configured to listen for its beacons; that does not mean every nearby Bluetooth device will automatically receive or forward them.
  4. Turn observations into visibility. Receivers forward data to software that can build location history, show inventory status and raise alerts based on location or condition.

For example, Juniper Networks’ July 2024 solution brief describes combining Wiliot battery-free Bluetooth tags with IoT-ready Juniper access points to provide asset visibility. The architecture illustrates why “real time” depends on more than the label: tags must transmit, receivers must be within reach and configured to listen, and the system must pass observations to the application.

What “real time” does—and does not—promise

In this context, real-time tracking means repeated observations that can keep a location or condition record current enough for an operational use. It does not, by itself, establish a particular update interval, maximum alert delay, indoor positioning accuracy or uninterrupted coverage. Those details depend on the tag, energy conditions, receiver placement, network and software configuration. The cited product and solution descriptions do not specify a universal latency or accuracy benchmark.

How Ambient IoT compares with other tracking approaches

The right comparison is not simply “battery-free versus battery-powered.” Consider how each system is powered, how it is read, what infrastructure it needs and what information it can report. Actual capabilities vary by product and deployment.

Approach Power and maintenance How observations are collected Typical infrastructure or data considerations
Ambient Bluetooth tag Some documented products harvest ambient energy and are battery-free; limited available power constrains design and functionality. Repeated beacon observations can provide ongoing visibility when receivers hear the tag. Needs configured Bluetooth listening nodes and software. Some implementations can use compatible access points or other Bluetooth devices; coverage and update cadence are deployment-specific.
Passive RFID RFID is a mature related technology in the ambient-power landscape identified by ITU; power and maintenance depend on the specific tag design. Often used for point-in-time reads when a tag is scanned by a reader. Requires compatible RFID readers and suitable read points. The reviewed material does not establish a universal comparison for read range, accuracy or cost.
Conventional Bluetooth asset tag Bluetooth tags commonly use batteries; battery life and replacement needs depend on the product. Bluetooth receivers can collect tag transmissions; frequency and capabilities vary. Requires listening infrastructure or compatible devices and software. Do not assume a Bluetooth tag is ambient-powered or battery-free.
Cellular or GPS-based tracker Power and maintenance depend on the device; the reviewed sources do not provide a directly comparable battery or operating-cost benchmark. Depends on the tracker’s positioning and communication design. Coverage and service requirements are product- and deployment-specific. The reviewed sources do not rank this approach against ambient Bluetooth on cost, accuracy or ROI.

RFID and NFC appear alongside newer ambient-power examples in ITU’s overview of the landscape. That relationship does not make RFID, NFC and ambient Bluetooth interchangeable: their tags, readers and operating models differ. For any option, evaluate total system performance rather than treating the tag’s power source as the whole answer.

Where battery-free tracking is most useful

Ambient tags are most compelling when an organization needs visibility across many low-value or frequently moving items and the labor or disruption of replacing batteries or scanning labels is costly. Candidate settings include:

  • 🛡️ DURABLE CONSTRUCTION: IP65-rated protection against dust and water, compact dimensions of 1.97 x 4.92 x 0.55 inches, designed for harsh environments in fleet logistics, cold chain monitoring, and container shipment tracking
  • Warehouses and supply chains: cases, pallets, products and reusable transport items moving through receiving, storage and shipping.
  • Cold chains: food or pharmaceutical shipments where temperature history matters alongside location. Whether a particular tag measures and records temperature must be checked against its specifications.
  • Healthcare and facilities: medical devices, tools and other equipment whose location is useful to staff. Bluetooth SIG’s RTLS material also identifies tools, workers, medical devices and patients as use cases.
  • Buildings and industrial sites: condition monitoring and commercial-building automation are among the early application areas identified in the Bluetooth SIG/ABI Research Ambient IoT note.

These are candidate use cases, not proof that every ambient tag can track every asset in every environment. Materials, attachment surface, energy availability and receiver coverage can affect whether a particular form factor is practical.

How to assess a deployment

Before selecting tags, define the operational question the system must answer: where an item was last observed, whether it moved, or whether its condition crossed a threshold. Then assess the complete tag-to-dashboard chain.

  • Maintenance: Is the tag truly battery-free, battery-assisted or replaceable/rechargeable? Confirm the product’s power source rather than relying on “Bluetooth” as a description.
  • Observation cadence: How often must the asset be seen for the workflow to work? Ask for measured update behavior in the intended environment; the reviewed sources do not set a universal interval.
  • Coverage: Which access points, gateways, phones or other nodes will listen, and where are gaps likely? Verify configuration and network integration, not just nominal Bluetooth compatibility.
  • Data: Does the product report only identity and location-related observations, or also movement, temperature, humidity or light? Confirm sensor support and reporting behavior for the exact tag.
  • Physical fit: Check dimensions, flexibility, attachment method and compatibility with the asset or disposable packaging.
  • Economics at scale: Compare tag cost, receiver density, cloud or software fees, installation and maintenance against labor avoided and the value of better visibility. The available sources do not provide an independent benchmark establishing universal ROI.
  • Failure handling: Decide how users will see stale observations, missing tags, receiver outages or incomplete coverage. A tracking record is only useful if its freshness and gaps are visible to the people acting on it.

Juniper Mist with Wiliot

Juniper’s July 2024 solution brief presents IoT-ready Juniper access points paired with Wiliot tags as an approach to asset visibility. It is an example of using network infrastructure as part of the listening layer, rather than treating tags as a standalone system.

Paragon ID XgenTag

Paragon ID announced XgenTag-L and XgenTag-R battery-free Bluetooth LE tags for logistics, healthcare and industrial environments. The two variants use different harvesting approaches: light for XgenTag-L and UHF RFID energy harvesting for XgenTag-R.

These examples show that “ambient” does not specify one energy source or one tag design. Product-specific harvesting, sensing, receiving and software details determine what a deployment can actually do.
