Ambarella announced two 5-nanometer systems-on-chip for in-vehicle fleet telematics on May 21, 2024, at AutoSens USA: the CV75AX for AI dash cams and the CV72AX for vehicle gateways. The company says they can run transformer-based vision workloads locally, with the CV72AX also designed to support multimodal vision-language models. These are announced semiconductor platforms—not finished, broadly available fleet products—and Ambarella did not disclose public pricing or a mass-production date.
What Ambarella announced
The CV75AX and CV72AX are built on Samsung Foundry 5nm FinFET technology and use Ambarella’s CVflow 3.0 AI engine. Both are intended to process video in the vehicle, combining AI and image processing with H.264/H.265 encoding. That can let a system analyze footage locally while also recording or preparing selected video for review.
Ambarella’s announcement described design wins and evaluations by telematics providers, but did not name the providers. It also did not provide a public price, a general-availability date, or an independent benchmark. The performance figures below are therefore vendor claims, not verified application-level results.

Dash cam: CV75AX
A dash cam typically combines one or a few cameras, local recording, driver-facing monitoring, and alerts such as lane or collision warnings. The CV75AX is aimed at that more focused device: it can support ADAS and driver-monitoring workloads in the same camera product, with additional compute for transformer-based networks and more involved driver-scoring models.
A driver score is an application decision, not a standardized output of the chip. Its usefulness depends on the behaviors selected, camera placement, vehicle and road context, calibration, and how a fleet distinguishes risky behavior from conditions outside a driver’s control.
Gateway: CV72AX
A vehicle gateway can aggregate feeds from several cameras and vehicle systems, connect to a cellular modem, and perform analytics near the source video. Ambarella positions the CV72AX for that role and says it supports up to 10 cameras. That input-count claim does not establish that a finished device can record every camera at maximum resolution and frame rate while simultaneously running AI and transmitting over a cellular network.

What transformers and vision-language models could add
Traditional convolutional vision models are often trained to recognize defined object classes and scenarios. Transformer-based vision models can account for broader relationships within a scene. Ambarella says this approach can improve accuracy and reduce false positives without requiring a separate training exercise for every object. That is a claimed benefit, not proof that alerts will be accurate in all weather, lighting, vehicle types, or camera installations; model training and validation remain necessary.
The CV72AX’s stated vision-language-model (VLM) capability is intended to combine visual analysis with language-oriented descriptions or queries. Ambarella lists potential uses including rapid event alerts, categorizing video from multiple channels, natural-language searches, and more efficient analysis. This means an in-vehicle visual-analysis capability—not necessarily a general-purpose chatbot. The announcement did not identify supported VLMs, model sizes, latency, memory requirements, quantization methods, or the software needed to deliver search to fleet users.
Useful video search requires more than a capable processor: it also depends on event metadata, time synchronization, storage and retention, an indexing system, and a local or cloud query interface. Likewise, running analysis at the edge can reduce the amount of raw footage uploaded, but does not by itself provide fleet-management software or eliminate cloud costs.
Shared hardware features and their practical role
- CVflow 3.0 and faster CPUs: Ambarella says both chips double the CPU performance of the prior generation. The AI engine and CPU serve different parts of the workload, from neural-network inference to application and system tasks.
- LPDDR5 and twice the DRAM bandwidth: More memory bandwidth can help move video streams and model data, but the announcement provides no complete throughput table or guaranteed stream configuration.
- USB 3.2: The faster interface is intended to support peripherals such as 5G modems. It does not include a modem, antennas, carrier service, certification, or their software integration.
- Integrated image processing and encoding: The chips combine image processing with H.264/H.265 encoding, supporting machine vision alongside human-viewable recording and multichannel video workflows.
- AI-based HDR: High-dynamic-range processing can preserve more useful detail when a scene combines bright and dark areas, such as a tunnel entrance, a sunlit windshield, headlights at night, or a loading-dock doorway. HDR cannot by itself correct motion blur, a dirty lens, poor camera placement, glare, or low-light noise.
Ambarella says the chips retain fanless operation and can operate across an ambient range of −40°C to 105°C. That is the company’s SoC claim, not a guarantee for a complete dash cam or gateway: the enclosure, memory, modem, storage, power supply, and cameras may have narrower limits.

Why local processing can matter to fleets
Analyzing video in the vehicle can reduce alert delay, allow some functions to continue through poor connectivity, and make it possible to upload selected events instead of continuous raw footage. That may lower cellular-data use and limit how much video leaves the vehicle. The actual savings and privacy outcome depend on the device’s event policy, retention settings, connectivity, and fleet software.
Edge processing also moves work onto a constrained device. Models must fit the available compute and memory; updates must be managed across deployed units; and local results may be harder to audit or debug. Power, heat, storage, camera quality, and installation remain system-level limits even when the SoC integrates several functions.

What system designers and fleet buyers should verify
For a product evaluation, the key question is not just whether a chip supports a feature, but whether the complete device can deliver the required workload under real operating conditions. Ask the supplier to demonstrate and document:
- Camera count, resolution, frame rate, and simultaneous recording and inference limits.
- Night, HDR, glare, vibration, and camera-placement performance in the intended vehicles.
- False-alert rates by event type and conditions, including driver-monitoring performance with sunglasses, masks, hats, or different seating positions.
- Model frameworks, deployment tools, update process, memory use, latency, and the specific VLM or transformer software included.
- Storage, retention, time synchronization, cellular-modem integration, and how events are indexed and searched.
- Whole-device thermal limits, power behavior, vibration and shock tolerance, electromagnetic compatibility, cybersecurity, and any applicable functional-safety requirements.
- Production status, long-term supply, qualification plan, support commitments, and the commercial terms for evaluation and volume orders.
Camera quality and installation can constrain AI results as much as compute. A capable model cannot recover detail that a poor lens, obstructed view, dirty windshield, or motion blur never captured.
