Mike Flanagan’s eight-episode Carrie series brings Stephen King’s story of high-school cruelty into the era of viral posts and online harassment. All eight episodes premiered on Prime Video on October 7, 2026. Andrew Webster’s review for The Verge argues that cyberbullying is a natural, effective update—but faults the show’s late shift in direction for weakening Carrie’s agency. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a measure of wider critical or audience consensus.
How the new Carrie updates King’s story
The series keeps the central premise of King’s 1974 debut novel: Carrie White is an isolated teenager entering high school, where she faces cruelty as her telekinetic powers emerge. In the series’ official synopsis, Carrie has been raised in isolation by her protective mother, Margaret, and is thrust into public high school after her father’s death. The contemporary update brings viral bullying and social-media pressure into that familiar setup.
According to Webster’s October 1, 2026 review, a gym-class humiliation is filmed, and an anonymous Instagram account called “carriered” becomes a tool for spreading rumors and targeting Carrie and other students. Those are plot details reported in the review, not real-world incidents. Webster’s point is that online abuse can follow students beyond school, making the cruelty harder for school authorities to contain.

A public school incident can become material for a much wider audience, while posts and rumors can persist after the school day ends. The official synopsis confirms the broad viral-bullying premise; the specific account and events come from the review.

What the review says works—and what does not
Webster considers cyberbullying a natural fit for the story and argues that it helps the classic premise feel suited to 2026. His overall review is favorable, but he identifies two reservations: references to King’s wider psychic universe feel heavy-handed to him, and a late change in the story weakens Carrie’s agency and the finale in his view. That criticism concerns the reviewer’s interpretation of the adaptation, not a confirmed consensus.
This is best approached as a spoiler-light view of the show: the review signals that its finale makes a consequential change, but does not need to be read as a verdict shared by every viewer. If preserving surprises matters, avoid seeking out detailed discussion of the ending before watching.

How to watch the series and revisit the source
Amazon says all eight episodes premiered on Prime Video on October 7, 2026, with a planned release in more than 240 countries and territories. That announced footprint does not guarantee current availability or identical access terms in every location, so check Prime Video in your region.
The direct source-material companion is Stephen King’s Carrie, first published in 1974. Amazon’s 2026 series guide reports that the novel spent 14 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and that King’s books have sold more than 350 million copies worldwide and been translated into more than 35 languages. These figures are reported by Amazon; they were not independently checked against original records.

For screen comparisons, Amazon’s September 2026 U.S. Prime Video roundup listed the 1976 and 2013 film adaptations. Streaming catalogs change, so those listings do not establish present availability. They also say nothing about physical-disc inventory.

If you want a contemporary take on King’s story, the central update is clear: the series makes humiliation shareable and persistent, not just a schoolyard experience. Webster responds positively to that choice, while criticizing the use of wider-universe references and a late story change that he believes diminishes Carrie’s agency. Whether that trade-off works for you will depend in part on how you feel about the finale.
