Amazon and Constellation Energy announced a 20-year power purchase agreement for electricity from Maryland’s Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant on September 30, 2026. The agreement covers 690 megawatts, including an approximately 190 MW capacity increase expected in 2030–2032, and the companies say it will enable more than $3 billion in Maryland infrastructure investment. Calvert Cliffs’ output will continue to flow to the PJM grid; the deal does not establish a dedicated physical connection to an Amazon data center.
What Amazon and Constellation announced
The agreement centers on Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center in Lusby, Maryland. Constellation and Amazon describe it as a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) supporting continued investment in and expansion of the plant. The companies say the arrangement covers 690 MW, including planned additional generation, and will enable more than $3 billion in Maryland infrastructure investment. Those are announced plans and investment figures, not completed construction or independently verified results. Constellation and Amazon’s September 30, 2026 announcement provides the terms.
| Announced item | What it means |
|---|---|
| 20 years | Term of the power purchase agreement. |
| 690 MW | Total contracted power, including the planned capacity increase. |
| Approximately 190 MW | New emissions-free generation the companies expect to come online between 2030 and 2032. |
| More than $3 billion | Maryland infrastructure investment the companies say the agreement will enable. |
| 1,790 MW | Existing Calvert Cliffs capacity cited in the announcement. |
How the power reaches Amazon and the grid
The agreement also includes a retail electricity supply arrangement for Amazon operations across the 13-state PJM market. The companies say all electricity generated at Calvert Cliffs will continue flowing to PJM’s regional grid. This is a commercial purchase and supply arrangement, not evidence that the plant is physically dedicated to one Amazon facility or data center. The announcement describes both the grid flow and retail arrangement.
Constellation says the long-term commitment will provide revenue certainty as it pursues relicensing Calvert Cliffs for another 20 years. That is the company’s stated objective: the announcement does not establish that relicensing has been approved or completed, nor that the planned capacity increase is already built.

Why Calvert Cliffs matters in Maryland
Calvert Cliffs sits on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay and is Maryland’s only nuclear plant. Constellation describes it as the state’s largest clean-energy source. The company says the facility produces about 80% of Maryland’s clean energy, generates enough electricity for the equivalent of more than 1.3 million homes, employs more than 800 people and contributes about $21 million in taxes each year. These are company-reported figures, not independently audited impact findings. Constellation’s announcement gives the figures.
What “after axed data center” does—and does not—establish
The headline phrase “axed data center” is not enough to identify a project, its location or capacity, when it was cancelled, or why. Available information does not establish those details or show that a data-center cancellation caused Amazon to sign the Calvert Cliffs agreement. The deal is confirmed by the companies; the suggested causal link is not.

Likewise, the headline’s “fuels” wording should not be read as proof that the agreement caused a particular share-price move. A market snapshot listed Constellation Energy (CEG) at $257.49, down 0.55% at the close on October 2, 2026. That dated price observation does not establish what drove the change. How this deal differs from other nuclear agreements
Amazon’s Calvert Cliffs agreement is one of several distinct arrangements linking technology companies and nuclear power. Their terms should not be conflated: the plants, contracted capacities, timing and regulatory status differ.
| Agreement | Announced terms and status |
|---|---|
| Amazon and Constellation, Calvert Cliffs | 20 years; 690 MW including planned uprate capacity; approximately 190 MW expected in 2030–2032; output continues to flow to PJM. Company announcement, 2026. |
| AWS and Talen Energy, Susquehanna | In an October 2024 overview, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported 960 MW of contracted capacity, planned increases in 120 MW increments, and an option for AWS to cap its commitment at 480 MW. The EIA also noted uncertainty around data-center construction, demand growth and efficiency. These are historical terms and observations from 2024, not a current demand estimate. EIA overview, October 1, 2024. |
| Microsoft and Constellation, Crane Clean Energy Center | Separate from Calvert Cliffs: Constellation’s November 2024 SEC-filed results estimated about $1.6 billion in capital spending for the then-planned restart of Three Mile Island Unit 1, renamed the Crane Clean Energy Center, and targeted 2028 for service, subject to regulatory approvals and NRC safety and environmental review. Constellation’s SEC filing. |
| Meta and Constellation, Clinton Clean Energy Center | Meta said its separate 20-year agreement in Illinois would begin in 2027 and cover 1,121 MW, including 30 MW of incremental capacity. Meta announcement, 2025. |
