Amazon Japan announced a Kindle lineup refresh on October 1, 2026, covering four main models: 16GB Kindle, 32GB Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft. The announcement also includes Kids versions. It is a Japan-market launch, not a worldwide release announcement; the prices and shipment plans below are those Amazon announced for Japan.
What Amazon announced for 2026
The refreshed lineup has two entry Kindle configurations, a Paperwhite and a Colorsoft. Amazon says all models adopt a flat-front design and are thinner than their predecessors; it says some models are also lighter or faster. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent measurements. Amazon Japan’s October 1 announcement does not identify a named spokesperson for the refresh.
Kindle 16GB and Kindle 32GB
The standard Kindle is offered with 16GB storage. The 32GB Kindle is a distinct option with an aluminum back. Amazon’s announcement does not establish that every feature of one version is shared by the other.

Kindle Colorsoft
Colorsoft has a 7-inch color display for compatible color content, such as covers, illustrations, images and manga, and supports five highlight colors. Color is not applied to monochrome content: Amazon says the display shows color only for content that supports it. Amazon advertises up to eight weeks of battery life, also dependent on usage.
Kids and Signature Edition variants
Amazon also announced Amazon Kids Kindle and Amazon Kids Kindle Colorsoft. A Paperwhite Signature Edition is separately listed. The announcement lists a Colorsoft Signature Edition among models open for preorder, but does not give its price in the stated price list. Do not assume features are identical across a base model, Signature Edition and Kids edition.

Which model fits which reader?
- Choose Kindle 16GB if you want the entry configuration and do not need the aluminum-backed 32GB model.
- Consider Kindle 32GB if you want the larger listed storage option and aluminum back.
- Consider Paperwhite if IPX8 water resistance or Amazon’s longer advertised maximum battery duration is important to you.
- Consider Colorsoft if you read color-supported material and want color covers, illustrations, images or manga on the device. It does not turn monochrome pages into color.
- Look at Kids editions if you specifically want one of Amazon’s announced Kids models; compare the exact edition rather than assuming its specifications match the standard model.
Amazon’s claims support a comparison of announced specifications, but do not establish independent differences in screen quality, speed, durability, comfort or actual battery life.

This announcement should not be confused with Amazon’s October 16, 2024 US Kindle-family release. That earlier US lineup included the first Colorsoft, a reimagined Scribe, a Paperwhite described as the fastest yet, and a Matcha entry Kindle. It was a different generation and market; its prices, models and launch timing do not describe the October 2026 Japan refresh. Amazon’s 2024 US announcement is useful only for that historical distinction.
