The first-generation Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition makes color available for book covers, illustrations, photos and highlights, while retaining a black-and-white reading mode. Amazon’s product information explains what it is designed to do, but the detailed observations behind the original hands-on review are not independently verifiable here—so a specific verdict on how vivid, bright or fast its screen looks would go beyond the available evidence.

Which Kindle Colorsoft is this?

This is the original, first-generation Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, announced by Amazon in October 2024. Amazon announced a newer Kindle lineup in October 2026, so specifications for that later lineup should not be confused with this model. Amazon identifies the Signature Edition as a 2024 release with a color display, 32GB of storage, an auto-adjusting front light, USB-C charging and wireless charging with a compatible dock sold separately. Amazon’s device identification page lists its generation and features.

What does the color display add?

Color is most relevant when the material on the page uses it: illustrated books, photos, comics, book covers and color-coded passages. Amazon also describes color browsing in the Kindle Store, two color styles—standard and vibrant—and the ability to zoom in on images. These are manufacturer-described capabilities, not independent measurements of display quality. Amazon’s October 2024 announcement explains its intended uses.

Amazon says the display combines an oxide backplane and custom waveforms with a light guide using nitride LEDs and software algorithms, intended to improve color, brightness and contrast for color and black-and-white content. That is Amazon’s description of the design, not an independently verified teardown or performance test.

Does color E Ink look good enough to justify it?

The original hands-on article appeared in search results dated October 16, 2024, but its review page was not accessible for verification. Its title conveys a broadly positive impression; it does not establish specific observations about saturation, screen darkness, ghosting, refresh speed or comparisons with other devices. Those subjective details should not be treated as confirmed findings.

For a buyer, the practical question is whether color materially improves the books and pages they read. If most reading is plain text, color features may matter less than the black-and-white reading experience. Amazon says Colorsoft is optimized for color reading and distinguishes its display from the Paperwhite, which is optimized for black-and-white reading. Amazon UK’s product listing describes the device as having a 7-inch display.

What else does the Signature Edition include?

  • 32GB storage: Amazon lists this capacity for the Signature Edition.
  • Auto-adjusting front light: The device can adjust its front light automatically.
  • Charging: It charges by USB-C. Wireless charging works with a compatible dock, sold separately.
  • Water-resistance rating: Amazon says the device is IPX8-rated and was tested for immersion in two meters of fresh water for 60 minutes. That test does not establish resistance to every liquid or real-world water exposure.

These details are listed by Amazon UK and in Amazon’s Signature Edition support information.

How long does the battery last?

Amazon advertises up to eight weeks, based on 30 minutes of reading per day, wireless turned off and the light set to 13. Amazon cautions that actual battery life varies with use. Treat eight weeks as a qualified manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee for every reading pattern. The Amazon UK listing gives the assumptions behind the claim.

Who is the 2024 Colorsoft Signature Edition for?

  • It may suit you if your library includes illustrated books or photos, you want color covers and store browsing, or you use color to mark passages.
  • Compare it with a black-and-white Kindle if most of your reading is text and black-and-white display performance is your main priority.
  • Consider the Signature Edition extras if 32GB storage, automatic front-light adjustment or optional dock charging are useful to you; USB-C remains an available charging method.
