Amazon announced AWS-related job cuts in April 2024 and a separate round of AWS cuts was reported in July 2025. The company did not disclose an exact total for either episode. In 2024, Amazon described reductions of “a few hundred” roles in physical-stores technology and “several hundred” in AWS sales, marketing and global services; Reuters later reported at least hundreds of jobs affected in AWS in 2025.
How many AWS jobs is Amazon cutting?
There is no verified combined headcount. For the April 3, 2024 announcement, Amazon used separate estimates for different organizations, rather than publishing a single total:
- “A few hundred roles” in the physical-stores technology team.
- “Several hundred roles” in AWS sales, marketing and global services.
Those figures are Amazon’s descriptions, not an exact count, so they should not be added into a precise total. The company did not provide a complete geographic breakdown or other details that would establish the full number of affected employees. Which AWS organizations were affected?
The April 2024 cuts reached more than one organization. One group worked on technology supporting Amazon’s physical stores; the other was part of AWS’s sales, marketing and global-services organization. The announcement was a targeted restructuring, not a statement that AWS was shutting down.

The Associated Press reported that Amazon had thousands of AWS job openings at the time and intended to seek internal opportunities for affected employees. That hiring context indicates the company was reducing roles in some areas while continuing to recruit elsewhere; it does not establish that every affected employee would find another position. Why did Amazon cut AWS jobs?
Amazon described the April 2024 changes as a strategic effort to optimize resources while continuing to invest and hire in priority areas. Spokesperson Duncan Neasham said the decisions were “difficult but necessary as we continue to invest, hire, and optimize resources to deliver innovation for our customers.” Amazon spokesperson’s statement, April 3, 2024

A separate round followed in July 2025. Reuters, citing two people familiar with the matter, reported that at least hundreds of AWS jobs were affected, including specialists; Amazon did not provide a more exact number. The company said it had made “the difficult business decision to eliminate some roles across particular teams in AWS.” Reuters report on AWS cuts, July 17, 2025 Amazon’s statement and context reported by Reuters
Are the cuts because of AI?
AI was part of the broader workforce context around the 2025 cuts, but the available statements do not establish it as the sole or direct cause of each job elimination. About a month before Reuters reported the July action, CEO Andy Jassy warned that adoption of generative-AI tools would lead to workforce reductions. Amazon framed the immediate AWS action as a business decision affecting particular teams, amid a review of organizational priorities.

Is AWS still hiring?
In 2024, the Associated Press reported thousands of AWS openings even as Amazon announced the cuts. That shows hiring continued in some areas at that time, but openings and staffing priorities can change; the report does not establish AWS’s current vacancy count.
