How the foam and split-toe carbon plate are meant to work
Altra says the two-piece FAST RCE midsole uses full PEBA foam. A carbon plate runs through the shoe, with a split-toe design that Altra says is intended to retain plate stiffness while allowing the big toe to engage. The concept reflects the brand’s attempt to combine a plated racing shoe with its toe-room-focused design.
That is a description of design intent, not proof that the split plate improves speed, propulsion, or injury outcomes for every runner. The plate’s patent-pending status also does not establish a performance advantage on its own.

How the fit may feel
Altra describes the Racing FootShape fit as roomy at the toes, with a snug midfoot and secure heel. That combination may appeal if you want more toe space than some racing shoes provide while still seeking a locked-in feel through the middle of the foot.
Toe room does not mean the entire shoe is universally wide, and the fit description cannot guarantee compatibility with every foot shape. If possible, try the shoe on in the size you expect to race in and check that your heel and midfoot feel secure without pressure at the toes.

What Altra’s performance claim does—and does not—show
Altra Australia says laboratory testing found a 2.6% improvement in running economy versus the Vanish Carbon 2. The product page does not state the year of the comparison. T3’s 18 August 2026 interview also reports Altra’s claim that the shoe tested “on par” with three rival shoes, but does not identify those models. Detailed protocols and complete results were not disclosed in the material available here.
T3 quotes Altra Head of Product and Merchandising Kylee Barton describing the design goal: “We want to be in the carbon racing game in a more relevant way, but we’re not going to compromise on the power of the big toe.” Barton also explained Altra’s reasoning for using more drop than its flatter shoes; that is her account of the design rationale, not a general scientific finding.
