If you’re asking, “What can I use instead of a delivery photo to confirm my package arrived?”, choose a carrier-supported record or handoff that fits what you need to verify. A signature or authenticated release can document a handoff; carrier pickup avoids leaving a parcel at your door; tracking and delivery instructions provide visibility or control. These methods establish different things, and none guarantees that a package cannot be misdelivered or stolen.

Compare options by what they document—delivery status, signature, identity or age check, or pickup—as well as whether the parcel will be unattended, whether someone can be present, shipment eligibility, location, and how you can access the resulting record.
USPS: Request proof of delivery or a signature
Proof of Delivery
For eligible USPS services, a Proof of Delivery (POD) letter can provide delivery information, including the recipient’s name, tracking number, signature image, and printed name and address. Other fields may include delivery location, mail product, extra services, and package weight. USPS lists eligible services such as Signature Confirmation, Restricted Delivery, Adult Signature Required, Priority Mail Express, and Registered Mail. USPS lists POD availability in the 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands; other U.S. territories and possessions are excluded. The page also says USPS cannot provide POD for items delivered internationally, though the foreign postal service may have its own process.

Adult Signature services
USPS Adult Signature Required allows the recipient or a resident at the address to present photo ID to confirm they are at least 21. Adult Signature Restricted Delivery requires the named addressee, who must be 21 or older, to sign. Depending on the service, proof may include the signature and printed name, delivery date, time, and location.
Eligibility differs by mail class, and the service must be added when postage is purchased. It does not expedite mail or promise a delivery time. For these USPS services, tracking information is available for 45 days before archiving, while delivery information—including signature and POD—is maintained for up to two years. These time periods apply to the described services, not every USPS parcel. Check USPS insurance and extra services for current rules.

Informed Delivery and delivery instructions
USPS Informed Delivery provides package details and tracking history, delivery instructions where available, and redelivery scheduling. It can help you monitor a shipment, but a status update alone does not show that you personally received it. Not all packages qualify for delivery instructions. USPS Electronic Signature Online applies only to specified services and certain insured items; other signature-required services still require an in-person signature.
UPS: Redirect an eligible package or collect it at an Access Point
UPS says recipients may be able to direct eligible packages to a UPS Access Point and manage deliveries online through UPS My Choice. Availability depends on shipment conditions. Packages requiring a signature cannot be left unattended without prior authorization, and some shipments—including some adult-signature shipments—may not qualify for alternative delivery options. If UPS holds a package at an Access Point after an unsuccessful delivery attempt, it is held for seven calendar days and then returned to the sender, according to UPS delivery-attempt guidance. Check tracking for “Awaiting Customer Pickup” before traveling. The required pickup proof varies; UPS lists combinations of government-issued identification, matching name or address, proof of residency, tracking number, or a shipper-provided release code.

The shipper selects the service, and the recipient receives a unique QR code and instructions. FedEx describes the option as available for select eligible expedited services. Restrictions include Hold at Location, Redirect to Hold, and address corrections; vacation holds may be available through FedEx Delivery Manager. Because availability is shipment-specific and can change, confirm current eligibility with FedEx or the shipper.
When tracking or a delivery location is enough
Tracking and notifications are useful when you mainly need to know that a shipment has reached a delivery stage or to manage a redelivery. They do not independently document a signature or authenticated handoff. Delivery instructions and preferred-location options may let a carrier leave an eligible package in a chosen place, but their availability depends on the carrier and shipment.
A lockable outdoor parcel box may be a practical place for an authorized unattended delivery, but the carrier pages cited here do not certify any specific box or show that it confirms the parcel was placed inside. Check carrier and shipper rules, dimensions, and delivery instructions. A box does not replace tracking, a signature record, or secure pickup.
