Alphabeats combines music with real-time EEG neurofeedback: a compatible headband measures brain activity, and the app subtly changes the music when that activity moves away from a target state. A 2024 study involving 41 national-level football players reported changes in alpha activity and improvements on two cognitive tasks, but its design could not establish that neurofeedback itself caused those results.
How does Alphabeats use music to train the brain?
Alphabeats is a mental-performance training system, not simply a playlist of relaxing or motivational tracks. Users choose music and wear an EEG headband. The app measures brain activity as they listen, then adapts the audio when the measured activity moves away from a target state. That feedback loop is intended to help users practise regulating their mental state.

The company presents the training around focus, flow and recovery. Those are product goals, not guaranteed outcomes: the available description does not specify the target brain state for every exercise or establish that a particular session will produce a particular feeling or performance result.

A 2024 paper by Geert J. M. van Boxtel and co-authors in Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback studied 41 national-level football players. They trained in groups of up to 13 using wearable EEG. The study reported a 34% increase in alpha activity associated with training, along with improved performance on task-switching and mental-rotation tasks.

- Sold as single
- Rib-knit lining provides additional cooling
These findings are promising as an indication that the approach merits further study, but they are not proof of better match performance. Alpha activity is a measured brain signal; an increase does not by itself demonstrate improved athletic results. The reported cognitive-task improvements also do not establish that players performed better in competition.
Why the result does not prove the music feedback caused the change
The authors said the study design could not separate the effects of neurofeedback from sitting still, listening to music, or other aspects of taking part. The 34% figure should therefore be read as a reported training-associated change, not a confirmed effect caused specifically by Alphabeats’ EEG-responsive audio. The study also does not establish that the same result applies to athletes in other sports, recreational users or every individual.
What equipment and subscription does Alphabeats require?
The app listing specifies that users need both a subscription and a compatible EEG headband. It names the BrainBit, Muse 2 and Muse S. A headband alone is not a substitute for the app and subscription; the system depends on the app using EEG measurements to adapt the listening experience.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Alphabeats worth considering for an athlete?
It may be worth considering for someone interested in structured mental-skills practice who is comfortable wearing EEG hardware and paying for an app subscription. The research offers an early signal from a group of competitive football players, but it does not settle whether the neurofeedback itself produces the reported changes or whether the training improves real-world athletic performance.
- It may fit athletes curious about focus or recovery exercises and willing to treat the app as a training aid rather than a performance guarantee.
- It may not fit someone seeking a proven route to faster, stronger or more consistent competition results, or someone unwilling to buy and wear a compatible EEG headband.
- Before committing, confirm current hardware support, subscription terms and availability where you live; those details can change.
Is Alphabeats only for elite sports?
The product has been positioned beyond elite athletics as well. Alphabeats announced a partnership with Amaze aimed at creators, and Sports Business Journal reported US preorders for a package using a BrainBit headband. Those developments indicate broader intended use, but they do not establish current availability or demonstrate that the system is effective for creators or other non-athlete groups.
