AlmaLinux 9.4 Beta, code-named “Seafoam Ocelot,” was announced on 15 April 2024 as a test release for the upcoming stable version—not as a production-ready release. Stable AlmaLinux 9.4 followed on 6 May 2024, and 9.4 has since been superseded. If you are evaluating AlmaLinux today, check the official release history for the current version; the details below explain what the 9.4 beta offered and how its test images were meant to be verified.
Is AlmaLinux 9.4 Beta safe for production?
No. The AlmaLinux OS Foundation’s beta announcement explicitly warns that the beta should not be used for production installations and says its beta upgrade instructions should not be used on production machines. The beta was intended for testing how the forthcoming stable release would work. Release and Automation Engineer Eduard Abdullin put it informally: “Now if you wanna test this somehow, somewhere to see how things will work in 9.4 stable, you’re on the right track.”
That distinction matters: beta release notes describe candidate features and package versions, not a guarantee of production readiness or measured improvements. Use a non-production test system if you want to assess the beta.

What was new in AlmaLinux 9.4 Beta?
The Foundation framed the beta around machine security and data protection, administration through the web console and system roles, reliability and recovery, and virtual-machine snapshots in hybrid-cloud environments. These were vendor-described goals and capabilities, not independently measured performance or reliability results.

System roles and LVM snapshots
The announcement highlighted new system-role capabilities for creating and managing LVM snapshots. The intended use was to support backup and recovery workflows. The release material does not establish a quantified recovery-time improvement or a benchmark against earlier releases.
Kernel and software streams
The beta notes identify the distributed kernel as 5.14.0-427.el9. They also list updated module streams and components:
| Area | Versions listed for the beta |
|---|---|
| Language and runtime streams | Python 3.12; Ruby 3.3; PHP 8.2 |
| Web and database streams | nginx 1.24; MariaDB 10.11; PostgreSQL 16 |
| Other component updates | Git 2.43.0; Git LFS 3.4.1 |
These are version identifiers in the release notes; they should not be read as evidence of a particular speed, security, or reliability gain.

Stable 9.4 kept the “Seafoam Ocelot” codename and became generally available on 6 May 2024 for x86_64, aarch64, ppc64le, and s390x. The beta was therefore a preview for evaluation; the later stable release was the general-availability release. Do not treat their kernel identifiers as interchangeable, or assume that testing the beta is a substitute for installing a stable release.

Is AlmaLinux 9.4 still maintained?
No. The official release history snapshot dated 17 September 2026 lists AlmaLinux 9.8 as stable and 9.9 Beta. It says each minor version reaches end of life when its successor is released; because 9.5 succeeded 9.4, 9.4 is no longer the maintained minor release.
The same release-history page states that AlmaLinux 9 receives active support until 31 May 2027 and security support until 31 May 2032. Those dates apply to the AlmaLinux 9 major series, not to 9.4 as a separately maintained minor version. Check the live release table before choosing an installation, since its entries can change after that snapshot.
