To allow a website to use your microphone in Safari, change that site’s microphone permission to Allow. On a Mac, you can do this in Safari’s Website Settings; on an iPhone, use Safari’s microphone settings or the site-specific Website Settings For menu. If Safari already allows access on a Mac, check macOS’s separate microphone permission for Safari.
Allow the microphone for one website on a Mac
With the website open in Safari, use either of these routes:
- For the open website: Click the Page menu button beside the Smart Search field, choose Website Settings, then set Microphone to Allow.
- From Safari’s settings: Choose Safari > Settings, click Websites, select Microphone, then choose Allow beside the site.
Apple lists Ask, Deny, and Allow as the site options. The When visiting other websites menu sets a default for sites without their own choice; leave it unchanged if you only want to grant access to one site. Apple’s Safari for Mac guide explains the website controls.

Allow microphone access in Safari on iPhone
To set Safari’s general microphone permission, open Settings > Apps > Safari > Microphone and choose Ask or Allow. To make a choice for a particular site, open it in Safari, tap the Page Menu button, tap More, then change Microphone under Website Settings For. The available site choices include Ask, Deny, and Allow. See Apple’s Safari guide for iPhone for these controls.

If Safari is allowed but the microphone still does not work
Check macOS microphone access
On a Mac, Safari’s website permission is separate from macOS’s permission for the Safari app. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and allow Safari if it appears in the app list. On macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, and Mojave, the path is System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Microphone. This system-level check is relevant when macOS has blocked Safari’s access to audio input. Reload and check Safari’s website settings
After changing a permission, reload the page and try again. If the problem continues, review the site’s Website Settings and check whether a Safari extension or another browser setting is affecting the page. Site data can also affect how a page works, but removing data is not a guaranteed microphone fix. Apple’s Safari troubleshooting guidance covers website settings, extensions, and other page problems. If other sites work and just one site continues to fail, contact that site’s owner or developer.

What the orange indicator on iPhone means
An orange indicator at the top of an iPhone screen means an app is using the microphone without the camera. It is a privacy indicator, not a control for granting permission. Apple describes the indicator in its iPhone status indicator guide.
