New Zealand’s All Whites improved their World Cup results from 1982 to 2010: they went from three defeats to three draws and an unbeaten group-stage exit. In 2017, before facing Peru in a qualifying play-off, players Andrew Durante and Chris Wood also said the squad had developed under coach Anthony Hudson. Those comments expressed confidence in the team’s progress; they did not describe a later World Cup result.
What the All Whites meant by “improved”
In November 2017, as New Zealand prepared for an intercontinental play-off against Peru, defender Andrew Durante described steady progress under Hudson. “We have improved in every window under Anthony Hudson,” he told FIFA, adding, “We have progressed massively in four years.” Durante also said the 2017 Confederations Cup had been invaluable, giving younger players experience against high-quality opposition in pressure situations—different preparation from the team’s usual matches against island nations. FIFA’s report on Durante’s World Cup dream was published on 9 November 2017.
Striker Chris Wood made a related but distinct comparison with New Zealand’s 2010 World Cup squad. He said the current group had “a lot more quality and more strength in depth” and believed it had the tools to match that team. He also cautioned that the squad had “a long way to go to achieve anything.” These were player assessments of squad potential, not a statistical measure of improvement or proof of a subsequent tournament achievement. FIFA published Wood’s comments in June 2017.

| World Cup | Group-stage results | Unbeaten? | Progression |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1982 | Three defeats | No | Did not advance from the group |
| 2010 | Three draws: against Slovakia, Italy and Paraguay | Yes; New Zealand was the tournament’s only unbeaten team | Did not advance from the group |
The 2010 campaign was a clear improvement in results over New Zealand’s 1982 debut, when it lost all three matches. But unbeaten did not mean victorious or through to the knockout stage: New Zealand drew all three group games and still exited at that stage. FIFA’s New Zealand World Cup history describes 2010 as a major improvement on the three losses in 1982.

What the 2017 ranking rise does—and does not—show
In July 2016, FIFA reported that New Zealand had climbed 54 places to 93rd in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking after winning the OFC Nations Cup. That dated ranking movement provides context for the team’s development during Hudson’s cycle; it is not a World Cup-performance statistic, nor by itself a measure of the squad’s quality at a later tournament. FIFA reported the rise on 21 July 2016.

Durante and Wood were talking before the Peru play-off, about progress, preparation and the squad’s potential. Their remarks should not be read as evidence that New Zealand had already qualified for a World Cup or achieved a later finals result. FIFA’s November 2017 coverage also noted that the side rarely played at home and had not hosted a top-100-ranked nation for three and a half years at that time; that is historical context from 2017, not a statement about fixtures today. FIFA’s report on Hudson and belief was published on 9 November 2017.
