All Editions of Windows 10 Compared with the Most Important Differences come with an important 2026 qualification: ordinary Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Home suits normal personal PCs, Pro adds business and virtualization tools, and Enterprise, Education, Workstations, LTSC, and IoT serve specialized or organization-managed deployments rather than ordinary consumers.

Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final general-release version for Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations, Enterprise, Education, and Enterprise multi-session. Microsoft’s lifecycle information confirms that those mainstream editions reached their standard support end date in 2025. The major exception is Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, which has a separate lifecycle listed through January 13, 2032—but it is licensed for fixed-purpose commercial devices, not general-purpose home computers.

All Editions of Windows 10 Compared with the Most Important Differences

Key takeaways

  • Windows 10 Home is sufficient for ordinary browsing, office work, gaming, streaming, and personal applications; Windows 10 Pro is justified by specific management, virtualization, networking, or security requirements.
  • Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final general-release version for the mainstream Home, Pro, Education, Enterprise, and Workstations families, and ordinary support ended on October 14, 2025.
  • Enterprise and Education are institutionally licensed editions whose value depends heavily on centralized administration, deployment, security policy, and licensing infrastructure.
  • S mode is a restriction applied to a base edition, while N and KN are regional media-reduced variants; neither is a higher-performance edition.
  • Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 is listed for support through January 13, 2032, but Microsoft’s licensing terms prohibit treating it as a general-purpose consumer Windows license.

What does “Windows 10 edition” actually mean?

A Windows 10 edition is the product family installed on a device, such as Home, Pro, Enterprise, or Education. Several other labels describe a release, servicing model, mode, regional variant, architecture, language, or licensing channel instead. Separating these labels prevents misleading comparisons such as treating “Windows 10 Pro 22H2” and “Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021” as if only the edition differed.

Label Examples What it describes
Edition Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education The feature, management, and licensing family.
Version or release 1507, 1607, 21H2, 22H2 A particular Windows feature-update baseline.
Servicing channel General Availability Channel, LTSC How the installation receives feature and quality updates.
Mode S mode A restricted operating mode layered onto certain editions.
Regional variant N, KN A media-reduced edition created for particular markets.
Architecture 32-bit, 64-bit, ARM64 The processor and software architecture.
Language offering Home Single Language A language or regional licensing variant.
Licensing channel Retail, OEM, volume, subscription, academic, embedded How the license is obtained and administered.

Architecture and language are not substitutes for edition. A 64-bit Home installation remains Home, and Home Single Language is not the same product as Pro. Licensing channel also matters: a volume-licensed Enterprise installation and an OEM Home installation do not have the same acquisition or transfer conditions.

Which Windows 10 editions existed?

Windows 10 included mainstream desktop editions, organization-focused editions, specialist servicing products, embedded editions, regional variants, and discontinued device platforms. The table below covers the useful scope without listing every OEM image, evaluation build, language SKU, or internal deployment SKU.

Edition or family Primary purpose Typical audience
Home General-purpose personal computing Home users, gamers, families, and ordinary laptops.
Home Single Language Home computing with a language restriction Consumers receiving a regional OEM installation.
Pro Business administration, virtualization, and advanced configuration Small businesses, professionals, technicians, and power users.
Pro Education Pro-based academic deployment Schools and eligible academic device programs.
Pro for Workstations High-end workstation capabilities Engineering, scientific, rendering, media, and data-processing users.
Education Institutionally managed education computing Schools, colleges, universities, and academic IT departments.
Enterprise Advanced organizational security, deployment, and management Medium and large organizations.
Enterprise multi-session Specialized Azure Virtual Desktop sessions Cloud-hosted desktop deployments, not normal local PCs.
Enterprise LTSC/LTSB Stable, narrowly controlled long-life deployments Special-purpose systems with controlled application stacks.
IoT Enterprise Full Windows-based operating system for fixed-purpose devices Kiosks, POS terminals, industrial systems, and medical or retail equipment.
IoT Enterprise LTSC Long-term servicing for fixed-purpose commercial devices OEMs and commercial device operators.
IoT Core and related embedded editions Embedded and device-specific scenarios Developers and equipment manufacturers, not ordinary desktop users.
Team Surface Hub collaboration devices Specialized Microsoft Surface Hub deployments.
Mobile Phone platform Discontinued Windows phone devices, not PCs.

Microsoft’s lifecycle pages group mainstream Windows 10 client families separately from IoT Enterprise. That distinction matters because support dates, licensing rules, intended hardware, and permitted use can differ substantially between products.

What is the difference between Windows 10 Home and Pro?

Windows 10 Home is the right edition for most personal computers, while Windows 10 Pro is worth choosing only when a specific Pro capability matters. Windows 10 Pro does not automatically make games, browsers, office applications, or ordinary desktop software run faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Capability or need Home Pro Why it matters
Browsing, streaming, office work, gaming Yes Yes Both editions support ordinary personal computing.
On-premises Active Directory domain join No Yes Useful for traditional business networks.
Group Policy administration Limited or unavailable for normal administrative use Yes Allows more formal policy control on managed PCs.
Hyper-V No Yes, subject to hardware and configuration Useful for virtual machines and testing.
Windows Sandbox No Yes, subject to hardware and build requirements Provides a disposable environment for testing software or files.
Remote Desktop hosting No for the normal host role Yes, subject to configuration Allows supported Remote Desktop connections into the PC.
Business update and device policies More limited More extensive Important in small-business and managed environments.
BitLocker capability and management More limited; hardware-dependent device encryption may exist More complete management capability Useful for organizational encryption administration.

Choose Home when the computer is personal and does not need domain joining, Group Policy, Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, Remote Desktop hosting, or business management. Choose Pro when the user can name a feature that requires Pro and has a legitimate Pro license or supported upgrade path.

Some features depend on the Windows build, hardware security capabilities, policy, configuration, or supporting services. For example, virtualization requires suitable processor firmware and memory, and device encryption availability is not identical to full organizational BitLocker management.

Is Windows 10 Pro faster than Home?

Windows 10 Pro is not generally faster than Windows 10 Home merely because the edition name is different. The editions normally use the same core operating system and do not establish a universal improvement in frame rate, application speed, battery life, or memory use.

Pro’s value is access to management, security, networking, and virtualization features. A gamer with no need for those capabilities should not buy Pro expecting higher performance; processor, graphics hardware, storage, memory, drivers, cooling, and application settings have a much larger effect.

What are Pro Education and Education used for?

Windows 10 Pro Education is a Pro-based academic edition, while Windows 10 Education is the broader school-oriented edition with enterprise-style management and security capabilities. Both editions are intended for eligible academic licensing and institutionally managed devices, not as automatic student upgrades for personal PCs.

Edition Base and positioning Best fit
Pro Education Based on Pro, with academic deployment positioning A school or academic device program that specifically licenses Pro Education.
Education School-focused edition with broader enterprise-style controls Institutional fleets requiring centralized administration, policy, deployment, and security.

A student buying a personal computer should not select Education simply because the computer will be used for schoolwork. Eligibility, activation, institutional administration, and license rights depend on the academic agreement or device program.

What is the difference between Windows 10 Enterprise and Pro?

Windows 10 Enterprise is intended for organizations that need broader centralized deployment, security, policy, servicing, and licensing capabilities than a typical Pro installation provides. Enterprise is not automatically a better Home edition, and Enterprise features can be irrelevant on an unmanaged personal computer.

Decision area Pro Enterprise
Typical audience Professionals and small businesses Medium and large organizations
Centralized deployment Useful, but with a narrower platform position Designed for extensive organization-wide deployment
Security controls Advanced security features for many business PCs Broader enterprise security and isolation options, depending on release and licensing
Policy and management Suitable for smaller managed environments Designed for larger identity, policy, device, and application-management systems
Licensing Retail, OEM, or business upgrade routes may apply Usually volume, subscription, or organization-specific licensing
Home-PC value Can be worthwhile for specific features Usually poor without an organization and its management infrastructure

The practical difference is not just a longer feature checklist. Enterprise capabilities may require directory services, endpoint-management systems, deployment tools, security policies, Microsoft services, or separate licenses. A business should evaluate the whole management and licensing environment rather than choosing Enterprise because it sounds more powerful.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 commercial licensing comparison places Pro, Enterprise, and Pro for Workstations in different business and workstation scenarios. Product terms and current licensing agreements should be checked before deployment.

Who needs Windows 10 Pro for Workstations?

Windows 10 Pro for Workstations is designed for unusually demanding professional systems that can use workstation-oriented storage, networking, memory, or processor capabilities. Pro for Workstations is not simply a speed setting for an ordinary laptop or gaming PC.

Workload or feature category Why Pro for Workstations may matter Who usually does not need it
Large professional data processing Higher-end workstation configurations and storage workflows may justify the edition. Office users and ordinary home users.
3D rendering, simulation, and engineering Professional software and high-end hardware can make workstation features relevant. Typical gamers who only expect more frames per second.
Large media and content production Fast local or network storage can benefit from workstation-oriented capabilities. Laptop users with ordinary SSDs and modest memory.
SMB Direct networking Microsoft documents SMB features for Pro for Workstations, Enterprise, and Education when the Windows version and both endpoints support the capability. Users without compatible high-speed network storage.
ReFS-related storage workflows Relevant only where the workload, storage design, and Windows release support the required behavior. Users expecting a general desktop speed increase.

Microsoft’s SMB feature documentation identifies SMB Direct as available on Windows 10 Enterprise, Education, and Pro for Workstations, subject to the Windows version and support from both endpoints. Hardware, storage format, drivers, and application behavior still determine whether the feature produces a practical benefit.

Do not rely on unqualified maximum-RAM, processor-socket, or ReFS claims. Those details can depend on the Windows 10 release, hardware platform, and exact workload.

What is Windows 10 S mode?

Windows 10 S mode is a restricted mode applied to a base Windows edition, not a wholly separate operating-system family. S mode limits applications primarily to Microsoft Store installation, uses Microsoft Edge for its protected browsing model, and aims to provide a more controlled environment.

S mode characteristic Practical consequence
Microsoft Store application restriction Traditional desktop installers, specialist tools, and some drivers may not be usable until S mode is left.
Microsoft Edge browsing model Users wanting another browser should verify whether the desired browser and workflow are supported before buying.
Security and simplicity goal S mode can suit a managed or simple device with a narrow application set.
Leaving S mode Free, but normally permanent; S mode cannot ordinarily be re-enabled afterward.
Organization policy An institution or administrator may prevent the user from leaving S mode.

How do you leave Windows 10 S mode?

Leaving Windows 10 S mode is free and permanent under Microsoft’s normal user process. Do not choose the separate edition-upgrade option if the goal is only to remove S mode.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Activation.
  4. Find Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro.
  5. Select Go to the Store.
  6. On the Microsoft Store page, select Get.

Microsoft documents this Windows 10 S mode exit process and warns that leaving S mode is permanent. Accessibility software, specialist utilities, alternate browsers, or traditional drivers unavailable through the Store are common reasons to leave S mode.

Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education could exist in S mode. A Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, or Education device in S mode had to leave S mode before upgrading to Windows 11, while Windows 11 S mode is limited to Home.

What do Windows 10 N and KN editions mean?

Windows 10 N editions were created for certain European markets, and Windows 10 KN editions were created for South Korea. N and KN omit media-related technologies; they are not faster, safer, or lower-performance tiers of Windows.

Area affected Possible consequence of N or KN Typical remedy
Media Player and media frameworks Media playback or recording components may be missing. Install the version-matched Media Feature Pack where supported.
Codecs and media applications Applications that depend on Windows media components may fail or lose features. Install the required components and verify application support.
Webcam and Windows Hello Some camera, biometric, or media-dependent functions may be affected. Install the appropriate feature pack, drivers, and updates.
Edge media and Teams Some playback or audio/video calling functions can be affected. Install the version-specific components and test the workflow.
Xbox, Mixed Reality, and other media features Media-dependent features may be unavailable or incomplete. Use a standard non-N edition when regional requirements do not require N or KN.

Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack documentation lists effects beyond Windows Media Player, including codecs, webcam functionality, Windows Hello, Edge media playback, Teams calling, Xbox features, and other media-dependent components.

How do you install the Media Feature Pack on Windows 10 N?

For Windows 10 N, Microsoft documents the following optional-feature path:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps, then Apps & features.
  3. Select Optional features.
  4. Select Add a feature.
  5. Select Media Feature Pack.
  6. Install it and restart the computer.

The pack must match the Windows version. Installing the Media Feature Pack does not necessarily make an N installation identical to every aspect of the standard edition, so the standard non-N edition is usually less troublesome for a normal personal PC.

What are LTSC and LTSB editions?

LTSC means Long-Term Servicing Channel, and LTSB was the older name for the same general servicing concept. LTSC is intended for fixed-purpose systems where predictable behavior and a controlled application stack matter more than regular feature additions.

LTSC characteristic Benefit Trade-off
Stable feature baseline Reduces disruptive feature changes on specialized equipment. Newer applications may expect components absent from the baseline.
Controlled servicing Useful for systems that must remain consistent for years. It is not the normal update model for consumer PCs.
Narrow device role Works well for kiosks, medical equipment, industrial controls, POS terminals, and dedicated laboratory systems. It can be a poor fit for a general-purpose desktop.
Special licensing Supports commercial and embedded deployment models. Licensing and acquisition are not interchangeable with ordinary Home or Pro retail licensing.
Consumer components Can reduce exposure to unwanted feature changes in a dedicated device. Microsoft Store, modern applications, media components, and newer software may be limited or require testing.

LTSC is not a general-purpose “debloated Windows” edition for gamers. A different servicing baseline can create compatibility problems with Store applications, modern software, media features, drivers, and applications that expect the normal Windows release cadence.

What is the difference between Enterprise LTSC 2021 and IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021?

Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 are different products with different intended uses and lifecycle treatment. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 should not be presented as the Windows 10 edition supported through 2032; Microsoft identifies IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 as the relevant Windows 10 LTSC exception listed through January 13, 2032.

Product Baseline and purpose Status relevant to 2026
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 Specialized enterprise long-term servicing deployment, based on a 21H2-era baseline Separate lifecycle; it does not receive the same 2032 treatment as IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021.
Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 Fixed-purpose commercial and embedded devices, based on a 21H2-era baseline Microsoft lists support through January 13, 2032, subject to the product’s lifecycle and licensing conditions.

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise is a full Windows-based operating system for specialized commercial devices. Kiosks, industrial computers, point-of-sale terminals, medical equipment, retail systems, and dedicated appliances can be appropriate scenarios. IoT Enterprise is not simply Windows 10 with consumer applications removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s Windows desktop operating-system product terms restrict IoT Enterprise LTSC licensing from use on a general-purpose PC or as a commercially viable substitute for one. An ISO file, product key, or online activation result does not establish that a consumer installation is appropriately licensed.

What is the Windows 10 support status in 2026?

Ordinary Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, and version 22H2 was the final general-release version for the mainstream desktop editions. As of August 18, 2026, Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations, Enterprise, and Education should be treated as legacy operating systems rather than normal current choices.

Edition or family Ordinary purpose Final mainstream release or baseline Status on August 18, 2026
Home Consumer PC 22H2 Standard support ended October 14, 2025.
Pro Advanced consumer and small-business PC 22H2 Standard support ended October 14, 2025.
Pro Education Academic Pro devices 22H2 Standard support ended October 14, 2025.
Pro for Workstations High-end workstation 22H2 Standard support ended October 14, 2025.
Education Schools and institutions 22H2 Standard support ended October 14, 2025.
Enterprise Managed organizations 22H2 Standard support ended October 14, 2025.
Enterprise multi-session Azure Virtual Desktop Specialized enterprise servicing Not a normal local-PC choice; lifecycle depends on the specific deployment.
Enterprise LTSC 2021 Specialized long-life deployment 21H2-era baseline Separate lifecycle; not the 2032 exception.
IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 Fixed-purpose commercial device 21H2-era baseline Support listed through January 13, 2032, subject to product terms.
S mode Restricted mode Depends on base edition A mode, not a standalone tier.
N and KN Media-reduced regional variants Depends on base edition Variants, not performance tiers.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 Home and Pro lifecycle page records October 14, 2025 as the mainstream support end date and 22H2 as the final general release. Microsoft’s Enterprise and Education lifecycle page applies the same broad retirement date to those mainstream families. Exact servicing can still depend on the specific release and licensing channel.

The safest recommendation for a new or replacement system in 2026 is supported Windows 11 hardware. If a current PC cannot satisfy Windows 11 requirements, replace it, use an organization-managed supported deployment where appropriate, or consider a supported Linux distribution only after checking application, driver, peripheral, and workflow compatibility. Any extended-support program must be checked against the exact edition, user type, region, and current Microsoft terms.

How do you identify the installed Windows 10 edition and version?

Windows 10 edition and version are different facts, so check both. “Windows 10 Pro” identifies the edition but does not reveal whether the computer is running 21H2 or 22H2.

Use Settings

Open Settings > System > About, then inspect Windows specifications. The page normally shows the edition, version, installation date, and build information.

Use Winver

Press Win + R, enter winver, and press Enter. The resulting dialog identifies the Windows release and build.

Use System Information

Run msinfo32 to open System Information. The utility provides additional operating-system and hardware details useful to technicians.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Command Prompt

systeminfo

The output includes operating-system information, although labels can vary slightly by Windows 10 build.

Use PowerShell

Get-ComputerInfo | Select-Object WindowsProductName, WindowsDisplayVersion, OsBuildNumber

This command displays the product name, display version, and OS build in a compact format.

Check the edition identifier with DISM

dism /online /Get-CurrentEdition

DISM is useful for identifying the current edition, but /Get-CurrentEdition is diagnostic information, not a license-conversion method. Edition changes require a valid license and a supported upgrade path.

Which Windows 10 edition should you use?

User or deployment Best-fit edition or approach Reason
Personal browsing, streaming, office work, gaming Home, historically Provides the normal consumer feature set without unnecessary business licensing.
Personal PC needing Hyper-V, Sandbox, domain join, or Remote Desktop hosting Pro, historically Those capabilities can justify Pro when the hardware and license support them.
Small-business managed PC Pro Provides practical business administration features without automatically requiring Enterprise infrastructure.
High-end rendering, engineering, scientific, or data-processing workstation Pro for Workstations Appropriate only when the workload and hardware use workstation-oriented features.
School-owned or centrally managed academic fleet Pro Education or Education Depends on the institution’s academic agreement and management requirements.
Large organization with centralized deployment and security Enterprise Designed for organization-wide policy, security, deployment, servicing, and licensing.
Azure Virtual Desktop multi-user session host Enterprise multi-session Specialized for Azure Virtual Desktop rather than local desktop installation.
Dedicated kiosk, POS, industrial, or medical device IoT Enterprise or IoT Enterprise LTSC Requires an appropriate fixed-purpose device design, commercial licensing, and tested deployment.
Device that must avoid feature changes for years LTSC, only where the deployment qualifies Stable servicing can suit specialized equipment but can reduce application compatibility.
Normal personal PC in 2026 Supported Windows 11 PC, if compatible Ordinary Windows 10 support has ended; LTSC and IoT are not consumer substitutes.

Frequently misunderstood Windows 10 edition differences

Can you install Windows 10 Enterprise on a home PC?

Windows 10 Enterprise can technically run on PC hardware, but legitimate use depends on the organization’s licensing and deployment rights. Enterprise is generally a poor choice for an individual home user who lacks the volume, subscription, or institutional agreement that supplies the license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you switch from Windows 10 Home to Pro without reinstalling?

A supported Home-to-Pro edition upgrade can often preserve the existing installation, but the valid upgrade path depends on the installed release, architecture, language, license, activation state, and deployment channel. Verify the current Microsoft-supported licensing path before changing editions, and do not assume that an Enterprise or LTSC key is a valid consumer upgrade.

Is LTSC better for gaming?

Windows 10 LTSC is not automatically better for gaming. LTSC’s purpose is controlled servicing for specialized devices, and missing or altered consumer components can create compatibility problems for Store games, media features, launchers, drivers, and newer software.

Why does IoT Enterprise LTSC receive support longer?

IoT Enterprise LTSC is designed for fixed-purpose commercial and embedded devices that may remain in service for years, so its servicing model and lifecycle differ from mainstream consumer Windows. The longer lifecycle does not convert the product into a general-purpose desktop license.

Is Windows 10 still safe in 2026?

Ordinary Windows 10 should not be treated as a normally supported current operating system in 2026 because standard support ended on October 14, 2025. A specialized lifecycle or verified extended-support arrangement may change the support position for a specific installation, but the exact edition, release, program, and eligibility must be confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use grey-market keys, unofficial edition-conversion tools, or consumer installation guides that repurpose IoT Enterprise LTSC or Enterprise LTSC. Activation alone does not prove that the edition is appropriately licensed or suitable for the computer’s intended use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Windows 10 edition for a personal computer?

Windows 10 Home was the best fit for most personal computers, while Windows 10 Pro was justified when the user needed features such as Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, domain joining, Group Policy, or Remote Desktop hosting. In 2026, a supported Windows 11 PC is the better choice for a new purchase because ordinary Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

Does Windows 10 Pro improve gaming performance?

Windows 10 Pro does not generally improve gaming performance merely by changing the edition. Pro adds management, security, networking, and virtualization capabilities; frame rate and application speed depend primarily on hardware, drivers, cooling, and software configuration.

Can Windows 10 S mode be disabled?

Windows 10 S mode can be left for free through Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Switch to Windows 10 Home or Pro > Go to the Store > Get. Leaving S mode is normally permanent, and an organization may block the change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 a consumer alternative supported until 2032?

No. Microsoft lists Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 support through January 13, 2032, but the product is intended for fixed-purpose commercial devices and Microsoft’s terms restrict its use as a general-purpose PC substitute.

What does the N in Windows 10 N mean?

Windows 10 N is a regional media-reduced variant associated with certain European markets. N editions omit media-related technologies that can affect codecs, webcams, Windows Hello, Edge media, Teams calling, Xbox features, and other applications; the version-matched Media Feature Pack may restore some functionality.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Home was the sensible Windows 10 edition for most personal PCs, Pro was for specific business or advanced-user capabilities, and Enterprise, Education, Pro for Workstations, LTSC, and IoT Enterprise were specialized products whose licensing and deployment requirements mattered as much as their features. Because ordinary Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, choose supported Windows 11 hardware for a new system. Treat IoT Enterprise LTSC and other LTSC editions as specialist deployment products—not loopholes for extending a home PC’s life.
