Battlefield 6 has four classes: Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon. Pick Assault to push objectives, Engineer to repair or counter vehicles, Support to revive and resupply teammates, or Recon to spot enemies and share information. In most modes, classes are defined by their abilities and team role—not by a fixed weapon choice—because open-weapon playlists let any class equip any weapon type.
Battlefield 6 classes at a glance
| Class | Best fit | Team contribution | Signature weapon |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assault | Leading infantry pushes and taking objectives | Mobility and faster objective interactions for nearby squadmates | Assault Rifle |
| Engineer | Fighting armor and keeping friendly vehicles operational | Repairs friendly vehicles and uses anti-vehicle tools against enemy assets | SMG |
| Support | Reviving teammates, restoring supplies, and holding ground | Team-wide revives, ammunition and limited health supplies, and deployable cover | LMG |
| Recon | Scouting, spotting, and precision engagements | Reveals enemy positions and supports the team with reconnaissance and disruption tools | Sniper Rifle |
These are roles, not rigid weapon locks in most playlists. EA’s Battlefield 6 Classes page and class guide describe the four classes and their distinct contributions.
What each Battlefield 6 class does
Assault: lead the infantry push
Assault suits players who want to move quickly into infantry fights and help take objectives. Its Adrenaline Injector temporarily boosts sprint speed and helps you prepare for combat; it does not grant extra health, so do not treat it as a healing ability. The Mission Focused trait speeds nearby squadmates’ interactions with objectives, giving the class value beyond its own frontline pressure. EA describes Assault as an offensive, anti-infantry class. See EA’s class guide for its abilities and role.
Engineer: repair allies and counter enemy vehicles
Choose Engineer when vehicles are central to the fight. Its Repair Tool restores friendly vehicles and can damage enemy assets; EA identifies Engineer as the only class able to repair friendly vehicles. Mines and launchers support its anti-vehicle job, while its signature SMG has improved hip-fire control. Stay close enough to assist allied vehicles when they need repairs, and use your anti-vehicle equipment against enemy armor rather than treating Engineer as an infantry-only class. Details are in EA’s class overview.

Support: keep the team fighting
Support is the strongest fit for players who prioritize revives, supplies, and defensive positioning. Every class can revive squadmates, but Support can revive any teammate and has access to the Defibrillator. A fully charged Defibrillator revives a player with full health. If a downed teammate is exposed, avoid reviving them into immediate danger; drag them behind cover when that is safer.
The Supply Pouch restores weapon ammunition and a small amount of health, but it does not replenish gadget ammunition or grenades. Deployable Cover can block infantry fire or provide a mounting point for an LMG or a weapon with a bipod. Support’s team value comes from combining those tools with safe, timely revives. EA explains the class in its Support guide.

Recon: make enemy positions useful to the team
Recon is about information as much as long-range shooting. Its Motion Sensor detects nearby moving enemies, vehicles, and gadgets. With Auto-Spot, looking at a hostile while aiming down sights can mark them for your teammates. Communicate or otherwise take advantage of those revealed positions so the information helps the squad rather than only your own aim.

Recon also has tools beyond spotting and precision weapons: EA’s guide describes drones, C4, and laser designation. A Laser Designator can identify distant enemies, designate vehicles or map points, and help allied Engineers or aerial vehicles lock on. The Handheld Jammer and Hardware Suppression System disrupt enemy equipment and defenses. For details, see EA’s Recon guide.

How weapon rules affect your class choice
Most modes use open weapons by default, allowing any class to equip any weapon type. An Engineer can use an assault rifle, for example, and a Support player can use a sniper rifle. In closed-weapon experiences, weapon choices are restricted by class signature categories, though carbines, DMRs, and shotguns are also selectable. The signature categories are Assault Rifle for Assault, SMG for Engineer, LMG for Support, and Sniper Rifle for Recon.
Signature weapons retain class benefits, so open weapons increase flexibility without removing class identity. Check the playlist’s weapon rules before building a loadout: in open modes, choose a weapon to suit your preferred engagement; in closed modes, signature-weapon proficiency matters more. EA outlines the distinction in its Loadout Creation and Weapon Classes article.

Choose a class by the job you want to do
- Choose Assault if you want to move with an infantry push and help your squad capture objectives.
- Choose Engineer if you want to keep friendly vehicles alive or make enemy armor your priority.
- Choose Support if you are willing to spend time reviving teammates, supplying ammunition, and creating safer positions.
- Choose Recon if you want to scout, mark threats, and help teammates act on enemy information.
There is no evidence-based universal “best” class or established class win-rate comparison in the cited official material. The useful choice depends on your preferred job, what your squad needs, and whether the playlist uses open or closed weapons. Switching roles to fill a team need can be more valuable than sticking to a favorite weapon category.

How Field Specs progress during a round
Each class has two Field Specs. Team progression and score XP unlock Field Spec levels from 0 through 3. Level 0 is active automatically; Levels 1 and 2 add passive abilities. Level 3 can be used once, after which progress drops back to Level 2 and you must earn Level 3 again. All Field Spec progress resets when a new round starts, so it is round-specific rather than permanent progression. EA Help explains the system in How do classes work in Battlefield 6?

Season 5 class changes: what applies to REDSEC
EA’s October 1, 2026 Season 5 and Beyond update places the class-specific changes below a section labeled “Battle Royale Specific Changes.” Treat them as REDSEC/Battle Royale details, not as confirmed changes to standard Battlefield 6 multiplayer. EA also says the Season 5 features are subject to change after Battlefield Labs testing and player feedback.
The proposed REDSEC training-path details in that update include:
- Assault: Level 2 health regeneration triggers 50% faster and healing improves 50%.
- Engineer: Level 1 explosive resistance and Level 2 armor replating each improve 33%; Level 3 launcher hits immobilize vehicles for 5 seconds.
- Support: Level 2 revives teammates 2.5 seconds quicker; Level 3 revival applies armor.
- Recon: Level 2 reveals nearby enemies within 25 meters for 5 seconds.
- All classes: Each Level 4 gadget-resupply improvement increases the resupply rate by 10%; the improvement resets on death.
That same Battle Royale-specific subsection lists the removal of the Drone Specialist and Hazmat Breacher alternate training paths, an Engineer Aim-Guided Launcher starting unlock, Support gadget-pool changes, and a Recon Drone moved to the loot pool with the Handheld Jammer taking its place. These details should not be assumed to describe standard multiplayer class setups.
