The Alienware x17 R2 is a large, premium gaming laptop built around Intel 12th Gen Alder Lake-H processors and high-power NVIDIA laptop graphics. Its RTX 3080 Ti configuration can deliver excellent performance, but results depend on the exact GPU power target, game, settings, and display. The trade-offs are substantial: reviewers found weak battery life, and Dell now lists the x17 R2 as discontinued in the US.
What configuration are the review results based on?
The x17 R2 was a configurable product family, not one fixed machine. Dell’s listings show different processors, displays, memory, and storage. TechSpot’s test unit, for example, paired a Core i7-12700H with an RTX 3080 Ti, 32 GB of RAM, and a 2 TB SSD. Those are TechSpot’s review-unit specifications, not a guarantee for every x17 R2.
Dell also listed Core i9 configurations: one with a Core i9-12900H, RTX 3080 Ti with 16 GB of GDDR6, and a 1920×1080 480 Hz display; another paired a Core i9-12900HK with a 3840×2160 120 Hz display. The displayed SKUs vary in memory and storage, with some listings showing up to 64 GB of memory and multiple-drive options. Dell’s product specifications should be checked against the exact configuration being considered.

How fast is the Alienware x17 R2 for gaming?
The RTX 3080 Ti implementation is a key part of the story. Notebookcheck identifies a 175 W graphics power target in its tested configuration and reports very strong graphics performance compared with the lower-power laptop GPUs in its test set. Its review found that the x17 R2 outperformed a Razer Blade 15 using an RTX 3080 Ti configured at 110 W. This is a comparison between those reviewed machines, not a universal ranking of every laptop with either GPU. Notebookcheck’s review includes its benchmark results and comparison context.
Individual game results vary. Tom’s Hardware recorded 117 fps in Far Cry New Dawn at Ultra settings and 97 fps in Borderlands 3 at Badass settings, both at 1080p. These figures apply to its test unit and settings; they are not a prediction for other games, resolutions, or x17 R2 configurations.

Sustained performance matters as much as the first run
In Tom’s Hardware’s 15-run Metro Exodus RTX stress test, the x17 R2 averaged 75.98 fps. It started at 80.41 fps, then settled around 75 fps after the first three runs. In the same test, the comparison MSI system averaged nearly 84 fps. The result shows why a short opening benchmark may not represent sustained performance, and why comparisons are most useful when the game, settings, and test method match. The RTX 3080 Ti Laptop GPU comparison average in that table was 11,850 points. Those figures belong to that specific benchmark and Notebookcheck’s tested systems, rather than indicating expected results in games.

Which display should you choose?
The display options serve different priorities, and they appear on separate configurations. Dell listed a 1920×1080 panel with a 480 Hz refresh rate and a 3840×2160 panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate. The FHD panel emphasizes refresh rate; the UHD panel offers substantially higher resolution. A sensible choice depends on whether your games benefit more from high frame rates at lower resolution or sharper image detail, and on the performance your chosen configuration can sustain.
What are the battery and usability trade-offs?
Battery life is a weakness in the high-end configurations reviewed. Notebookcheck described its runtime as among the worst it had seen on a gaming laptop, while Tom’s Hardware advised keeping the power brick handy. These are reviewers’ qualitative assessments; the available results do not establish a single runtime figure that applies across workloads and configurations.

Tom’s Hardware found that almost all ports are on the rear. The headphone jack is near the back on the right, while the barrel charger connects on the left edge. Rear ports can help keep cables out of the way on a desk, but are less convenient if you regularly plug in or remove side-facing peripherals.
Thermal measurements also need context. Tom’s Hardware measured an average CPU package temperature of 81.4°C during its Metro Exodus stress session, but its measurement tool did not report GPU information for that sample. That CPU reading alone does not establish the laptop’s overall temperature or noise experience across configurations.

Is a used Alienware x17 R2 worth considering?
Dell’s US product page labels the x17 R2 discontinued and says it is no longer available from Dell. That does not rule out third-party used or refurbished stock. The historical launch configuration and review results do not establish a current fair price, so evaluate each listing on its own terms.
- Confirm the exact configuration: Check the processor, GPU, memory, storage, and display rather than relying on a generic x17 R2 title.
- Verify condition and coverage: Ask about wear, battery condition, included power adapter, warranty, and return terms.
- Compare like with like: For performance claims, match the GPU power target, game, resolution, settings, and whether results come from a sustained test.
- Judge the display for your use: Decide between the listed FHD 480 Hz and UHD 120 Hz options based on the games and workloads you actually use.
- Check the current listing: Availability, seller, condition, and price are specific to each used or refurbished offer.
How to compare it with another gaming laptop
Compare more than the GPU name. Laptop graphics chips with the same label can have different power targets, and a high initial frame rate may not hold under a sustained workload. A useful comparison checks the exact CPU and GPU configuration, results in the same game at the same settings and resolution, display resolution and refresh rate, battery testing under a stated workload, and practical factors such as chassis size, power adapter, and port placement. The x17 R2 reviews cited here are historical tests, not a synchronized comparison with current laptops.
